Pixii’s 12MP display-less M-mount rangefinder is now available to order

08 Jul

It’s been almost two years since the French startup Pixii announced its display-less digital M-mount rangefinder that uses your smartphone as both a screen and means of storage. Now, the niche camera is available to purchase, but don’t expect to pick it up for cheap.

To recap, the Pixii camera (Model A1112) is a digital M-mount rangefinder constructed of an aluminum frame that houses the 12MP (4080 x 2732 pixels) APS-C CMOS sensor. It features an electronic global shutter, Raw (DNG) capture and works with Leica M-mount lenses, as well as M39/LTM lenses when used with an adapter.

Similar to the Leica M-D, the Pixii camera eschews a rear LCD display and instead relies on being paired with a smartphone to review images captured through the 0.67x magnification optical viewfinder (53.6-degree FOV). The only display on the camera is a small OLED screen on the top of the camera that shows the basic image settings.

The Pixii camera also forgoes an SD card and instead stores images on 8GB of internal storage (4GB if you pick up the ‘launch edition’ model). Once filled, images can be transferred wirelessly to a paired mobile device via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The camera also uses a built-in 1,000mAh Li-ion battery that can be recharged via the onboard USB port.

While we haven’t taken it for a spin ourselves, our friend Hamish Gill of 35mmc fame spent some time with one of the units and wrote up a comprehensive review of his experience with one of the first units.

Pixii has also shared a number of sample photos captured with one of its cameras:

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_1388368447″,”galleryId”:”1388368447″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

The Pixii camera is available to purchase on the Pixii website. The 8GB model comes in ‘Space Gray’ and ‘Black Matte’ finishes and retails for €2,900 / ~$ 3,277, while the special ‘launch edition’ comes in at €2,900 / ~$ 3,259. There’s no information at this time on shipment timeframes, but we’ve contacted Pixii about the matter and will update accordingly when we receive a response.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 comes with dual-aperture 12MP dual-cam

10 Aug

At a high-profile launch event in New York, Samsung took the wraps off its much-leaked, next-generation Note device. The Galaxy Note 9 borrows the S9+’s 12MP dual-aperture dual-cam, with OIS in both rear cameras and an emphasis on AI-enhanced shooting modes. It’s roughly the same size as its predecessor, though its 6.4″ Super AMOLED “Infinity Display” is a touch larger than the Note 8’s.

Both rear cameras offer 12MP resolution – a wide-angle camera with F1.5/2.4 variable aperture, and a telephoto camera with F2.4 fixed aperture. An 8MP F1.7 front-facing camera is also on board.

The camera will also alert the user with a notification if it detects that a “flawed” image has been taken

Samsung’s camera app uses an AI-powered Scene Optimizer to identify subjects and sort images into one of 20 categories. The camera will also alert the user with a notification if it detects that a “flawed” image has been taken – too blurry, backlit or marred by a smudged lens.

One of the Note 9’s headline features is the option for massive built-in storage capacity: either 128GB or 512GB. Both options are expandable via MicroSD. The S Pen stylus also gets a revamp, with Bluetooth Low-Energy support which allows it to act as a remote shutter for the camera. A 4000 mAh battery claims all-day performance, with a “Water Carbon Cooling system” and real-time performance adjustments to prevent… well, we know what can happen.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 goes on sale August 24th – a 128GB model will cost $ 1000 and the 512GB version will sell for $ 1250.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S comes with 12MP dual-cam, OIS and 2x optical zoom

28 Mar

Earlier today, Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi unveiled its latest flagship smartphone: the Mi MIX 2S. Like with the original Mi MIX, one the new model’s most striking features is the large, almost bezel-less, display. However, the Mi MIX 2S has a lot to offer in the camera department as well.

The phone’s dual camera setup combines a main camera with 1/2.6-inch 12MP Sony sensor, F1.8 aperture and wide-angle 26mm equivalent lens with a secondary tele module, featuring a smaller 1/3.4-inch 12MP sensor, F2.4 aperture and equivalent 46mm lens for enhanced zooming and bokeh simulation. The main camera also boasts optical image stabilization, while the longer lens remains unstabilized.

Other imaging features include gyroscope-based Electronic Stabilization (EIS) in video mode, phase-detection autofocus and a dual-tone LED flash. And, of course, there’s a front-facing camera as well: a 5MP sensor behind an F2.0 lens.

The Mi MIX 2S is also one of the first devices to deploy Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 high-end chipset. In combination with 6 or 8GB of RAM, it should provide plenty of power to run the Android 8.0 operating system and apps. Between 64 and 256GB of internal storage mean there is plenty of space for image and video files, but unfortunately, an expansion slot isn’t on board.

A 5.99-inch IPS LCD display with 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution is available for general operation, as well as framing and editing of images. The 3,400 mAh battery should hopefully get you through a day of normal use.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S will start at CNY3,299 (approximately $ 530 USD) for the 6GB+64GB version, and goes all the way up to CNY3,999 (approximately $ 640 USD) for the top model with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, making the new model look like a good value proposition when compared to competing devices from more established manufacturers.

The phone is set to launch in China starting this April, followed by international markets sometime later. Unfortunately, chances we’ll see the Mi MIX 2S in the United States are slim judging from the push-back Huawei has faced while trying to break into the US market.

HTC announces U Ultra 5.7″ phablet with 12MP camera

13 Jan

If you liked the camera performance of last year’s HTC 10 but would prefer a larger screen, the HTC U Ultra, which has been announced today, might just be what you’ve been waiting for. The Ultra U comes with the same rear camera module that can be found in the 5.2″ HTC 10. A 12MP 1/2.3″ sensor with 1.55µm pixels is combined with a fast F1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization. The camera also comes with phase detection AF and is capable of recording 4K video and 12-bit Raw files.

Compared to the HTC 10 the front camera has received a serious upgrade, though. It now comes with a 16MP resolution and a pixel-binning low-light mode that puts out 4MP files. Images can be viewed on a 5.7″ Quad-HD display that comes with a secondary small screen on top, similar to what we’ve seen on the LG V20. The Android OS is powered by Qualcomm’s  Snapdragon 821 and 4GB of RAM. 64GB and 128GB storage options are available and can be expanded via microSD slot.

Like the latest iPhones, the U Ultra lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack and only comes with a USB Type-C port. The latter is used to charge the comparatively small 3,000 mAh battery. Thankfully, quick-charging is supported. All the components are packed into HTC’s new ‘Liquid Surface’ design metal unibody that is entirely covered in glass, so a solid case might be a useful investment for future U Ultra owners. The new model will be available globally this quarter. In the US the U Ultra will set you back $ 749 and can be pre-ordered now. Start of shipping is slated for mid-March.

Meizu Pro 6 Plus features 12MP Sony sensor and LED ring flash

01 Dec

Chinese smartphone maker Meizu has today unveiled the Pro 6 Plus, a high-end model with metal housing and large 5.7″ pressure-sensitive AMOLED screen with Quad-HD resolution. The Sony Exmor IMX386 sensor in the camera module has been deployed in some previous Meizu models but at 1/2.9″ and a pixel-pitch of 1.25µm it is a touch smaller than the 12MP Sony chips used in some of the other current high-end devices.

The camera also features optical image stabilization, a lens with F2.0 aperture and laser-assisted autofocus. The front-facing camera is surrounded by 10 dual-tone LEDs forming a ring flash, and comes with a 5MP sensor and F2.0 lens.

The Android OS is powered by the same Exynos 8890 chipset that can be found in the Samsung Galaxy S7 and 4GB of RAM. Buyers can choose between 64 and 128GB storage versions. The Pro 6 Plus also features a fingerprint reader that doubles as a heart-rate monitor and a dedicated audio chip. Power is supplied by a 3,400mAh battery that is charged via a USB Type-C port with fast charging.

The new model will be available in Champagne Gold, Deep Ash and Moonlight Silver. The 64GB version will set you back approximately $ 435 while the 128GB requires an investment of $ 480. No detail on availability outside China has been provided yet.

Vivo Xplay6 features 4-axis stabilized 12MP dual-cam

19 Nov

Chinese manufacturer Vivo has unveiled its high-end model Xplay6 and the new device comes with an interesting (at least on paper) dual-camera setup. The main sensor is a 12MP 1/2.55″ Sony IMX362 chip with a 1.4um pixel size. It is coupled with a fast F1.7 aperture lens, four-axis optical image stabilization and a dual-tone LED. Phase detection AF is on board as well and the main sensor is supported by 5MP secondary chip for depth measurement, which will presumably be used to create a ‘fake bokeh’ effect.

The front camera comes with a 16MP sensor and F2 aperture and images can be composed and viewed on a curved 5.46″ QHD AMOLED display. Also included are a fingerprint sensor and a headphone-jack with dedicated amp. Android 6.0 Marshmallow and Vivo’s Funtouch OS 3.0 are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and a whopping  6GB of RAM. 128GB are available for storage and a 4,080 mAh battery should get you easily through the day.

All the high-end components are wrapped up in a metal body that is available in gold or rose gold. The Xplay6 will become available in China on December 12 for approximately $ 651. No detail on international availability has been released yet.

Huawei launches Honor V8 with 12MP dual-camera module

11 May

Huawei has announced the V8, the new flagship in the Chinese manufacturer’s Honor series of devices. Consumers can choose from different display and processor options but the camera module is the same on all variants. The Honor V8 features a dual-camera setup that looks very similar in terms of specifications to the one found on the Huawei P9, but has to make do without the P9’s Leica branding.

Both 12MP sensors come with a 1.76-micron pixel-size and are coupled with a 6-element lens with F2.2 aperture. There is also a dual-LED flash and the AF-system is laser-assisted. As on the P9, the front camera offers an 8MP sensor and F2.4 aperture.

In terms of display resolution customers get to choose from Full-HD or Quad-HD but all displays measure 5.7-inches and come with 2.5HD curved glass. The Android 6.0 operating system with Huawei EMUI 4.1 skin is powered by an octa-Core Kirin 950 or 955 chipset. RAM is 4GB on all models but the model with the higher-resolution screen comes with 64GB of storage while the Full-HD variant has to make do with 32GB.

Energy on all models is provided by a 3,500mAh battery that is charged via a USB Type-C connector. In China the Full-HD base model will retail for approximately $ 350 while to the top-end version with QHD-screen and 64GB storage will set you back approximately $ 439.
