Readers’ Showcase: Janne Voutilainen

25 Apr

Janne Voutilainen is a man of relatively few words. In that context, the minimalism of some of his photos makes perfect sense. He’s based in Finland and finds himself drawn to landscape photography, as well as astrophotography, which is how we discovered his work. He offered a few insights into his images in our Q&A. His otherworldly images speak volumes too – take a look. See gallery

Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 real-world sample gallery posted

25 Apr

Panasonic’s Lumix CM1 has the potential to break new ground in the territory between smartphones and cameras. It offers a 1-inch 20MP sensor, much larger than the typical smartphone camera chip. It also provides an F2.8 Leica-branded lens encircled by a control ring that can be used to adjust various exposure settings. We got out and about with it to see what its images look like. 24 Architecture Images with Graphic Powerful Lines

25 Apr

Architecture photographers strive to get the lines all perfectly straight and up and down. But sometimes converging lines, or bending ones can create more powerful images.

Note: Check out our Using Lines in Your Photography series for more on this topic.

Let’s have a look at some architecture images that have graphic, powerful lines which are not always straight:

Playing with Perspective in Paris: New Optical Illusion Art

25 Apr

[ By Steph in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

varini optical illusion 1

Two-dimensional shapes seem to hover weightlessly in space like a projection, but step slightly to your right or left and the whole image falls apart, becoming a chaotic assemblage of lines painted onto various surfaces in a room. Swiss painter Felice Varini has been transforming public spaces with his single-vantage-point illusions since 1978, and now he’s brought them to the Grande halle de la Villette in Paris’ Parc de lab Villette.

Varian invites us to look at the spaces around us in a new way, taking a closer look at the physicality of the world we have constructed around us through his somewhat disorienting optical illusions.

The spaces themselves are Varian’s true media, more so than the paint. Even when certain shapes and motifs are repeated, the result is different every time. “My work evolves in relation to spaces that I am in contact with,” he says.

The installations will be up through September 13th, 2015, and guided tours are available.

25 Apr

Cities are full of great photography subjects, architecture is among the most popular. Doorways, windows, cityscapes, details or full wide sweeping vistas.

Share your architecture images here:

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them. Show me your best images in this week’s challenge. Sometimes it takes a while for an image to appear so be patient and try not to post the same image twice.

Speed boost: Sony SLT-A77 II review posted

25 Apr

The Sony SLT-A77 II uses that company’s translucent mirror technology in combination with an AF system that Sony claims is dramatically improved over its predecessor. It boasts 12fps continuous shooting with AF, not to mention a 24MP sensor, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC, 2.4M dot OLED viewfinder and a tiliting/swiveling LCD. We put its impressive AF claims to the test. Read review

Sony updates 24-70 and 16-35mm A-mount Zeiss lenses with improved AF and image quality

24 Apr

As promised last November, Sony has announced two new full-frame A-mount lenses. Compared to their 2008-vintage predecessors the Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM II and 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM II feature improved image quality, less ghosting and flare, and a four-fold improvement in subject tracking speed, according to Sony. Another addition are seals that should make these lenses dust and water resistant. More details
