[MODIFIED] Digital Urban and Cityscape Photography – Look Outside the Main Business / Financial District

01 Aug

Step outside of a city’s main district for some of the best skyline digital photos opportunities.

Instead of taking the usual cityscape photos while inside the main Financial or Business Districts, you may want to scout out areas outside of the main ‘hustle and bustle’ to take wide-angle skyline photos that showcase more of a city’s architecture.

In Chicago, instead of just taking Loop pictures from the Chicago River and other well-photographed vantage points, consider heading out to Navy Pier to take a cityscape photo on the lakefront. Or, another great photo opportunity is north at Lincoln Park; shoot south, towards the skyscrapers, and part of Lake Michigan will be in view….

Pro shooter to cover London 2012 using Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5

01 Aug

panasonic_dmcg5.png

Panasonic has announced that Getty Images sports photographer Dean Mouhtaropoulos will be covering the London 2012 Olympic Games exclusively using its recently-announced Lumix DMC-G5. His images will be displayed both at the Getty Gallery next to London’s Olympic Park, and on Panasonic UK’s homepage. With sports photography traditionally the preserve of large SLR cameras, the company is hoping to showcase the capabilities of its mirrorless model in this notoriously-demanding field. We suspect the press release has more to do with making the most of its Olympic sponsorship than swaying other pros, but it should be interesting to see the results.

We’ve just updated our in-depth review of the Nikon D3200 entry-level DSLR to include a page of information about Nikon’s WU-1a Wi-Fi adapter. The WU-1a arrived in office as we were preparing the review for publication so we’ve spent the past 48 hours using it, before adding it to the review. The WU-1a allows both wireless image transfer to a an Android smartphone or tablet, or to use the device as a remote shutter trigger (release of an iOS version is planned for fall 2012). Click here to read our updated 21-page review.

Microsoft Word 2010 – Remove Text Formatting, Highlighting, and Styles

01 Aug

A 3-part tip to removing all formatting, highlighting, and style from a selected block of text.

While editing a complex Microsoft Word 2010 document, you might have a section of text (or the entire document) that contains what you now feel are extraneous formatting (bold, fonts, underlines, etc), styles (such as headings), and highlights.

Removing all of these is a simple process:…

[MODIFIED] Digital Camera Memory – Should You Buy a USB 3.0 Card Reader?

01 Aug

Advantages and disadvantages of a USB 3.0 memory card reader.

While most computers at the time this tip was written support USB 2.0, not all support USB 3.0, a higher-speed version of the USB standard. If you perform a lot of digital photo manipulation, copying gigabytes of photos between memory cards and various computers, upgrading to USB 3.0 may make sense in that it could save you time.

Unfortunately, if you are using older memory cards or memory cards geared towards average consumers instead of high-end hobbyists or professionals, you may find the purchase cost not worth the money. Medium or lower-range memory is rated at a lower transfer speed that may not take advantage of the benefits USB 3.0 offers. Also, transfer speeds between USB 3.0 readers vary, so the cheapest reader may not result in the best performance….

Facebook pushes photo prominence in timeline

01 Aug

Facebook-photo-stream.png

Facebook has updated the way photos are presented in the timeline section of users’ profiles – devoting more page space to the images and making it easier to give some images prominence. The result is an awful lot like the Google+ gallery view, and the Flickr interface for viewing contacts’ images but appears to crop all images to square format. The Facebook update gives the ability to ‘highlight’ specific images (making them four times larger) but doesn’t just present your own images – images with you tagged in them will be intermingled with your own shots, so it’s not an optimal way to showcase your photography, unless you ruthlessly de-tag yourself from other peoples’ photos.

When Photography And Karate Merge

01 Aug

Not long ago I was asked to photograph a special event at a local karate dojo. The event was a very rare occasion as three high ranking karateka were performing the same kata in sequence. In addition, Zoku, who is not often found performing a kata in public, did just that – many times.

When Photographing Something Special

To share the experience with the world, I decided to do something special of my own.

Because a big part of karate is the community, sharing and education – I wanted to share the experience on my blog, and the same time, educate my readers. But that isn’t all I did. Zoku has been kind enough to share short descriptions of each photograph. So in the articles, you will experience:

  • The karate photographs
  • The description of what is happening in the photograph
  • How the event & karate description relates to photography

These are some of the photographs in the series, but there are many more to follow.  Please visit the When Photography & Karate Merge series and enjoy.

[MODIFIED] Windows XP and DOS – Unix Du (Disk Usage Command)

01 Aug

This Windows XP – Windows 7 DOS replacement for the Unix du command determines the disk space used in various directories, and can output to CSV for import into Excel.

Most Unix operating systems come with a du command for users and system administrators to help determine which directories use the most space on a hard drive or other media. This is useful if file space is getting low and one needs to determine where to start looking for files to remove and/or archive.

The Sysinternals website, part of Microsoft TechNet, offers a free alternative to the disk usage command, and runs under Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 (not tested in Windows 8). Simply download the zip file du.zip, unzip the executable inside to your main Windows directory, and you can check disk usage via the command line:…
