NYC Workshop at SUN Studios September 8th and 9th!

Who wants another workshop? How about having one during one of the best times in NYC….NYC Fall Fashion Week? Well, you got it! On September 8th and September 9th, which is a Saturday and Sunday, I will be teaching another famous Fashion Photography Workshop at the fabulous SUN Studios located in New York City’s Soho neighborhood. The format for Saturday’s class is pretty much going to stay the same forever: Beauty Lighting Workshop in the morning, Fashion Lighting Workshop in the afternoon. Sunday however we have the special honor of having our original retouching megastar David Skyler joining us again after a 2 year break! So on Sunday mornings, we will all meet again at SUN Studios and make sure to bring your Wacom Tablet and a thirst for learning as much information as you can possibly cram in your head because David is going to show you how to retouch for beauty and fashion and your work will never look the same! After retouching we jump right into the business segment where I will go through marketing your work and budgeting your jobs. You can read more about the workshop and order tickets directly HERE. I just want to add this: The last two workshops have been so rewarding for me and SO much fun. I have to say, too, that the students attending both my LA workshop in April and my Berlin workshop in June were absolutely wonderful! I have started to form lasting friendships with a few of the students, keeping in touch quite often. I think that’s the most rewarding part of teaching the workshops: I get to meet you awesome people and watch you guys grow leaps and bounds just by learning a few lighting and retouching tricks! And not only do I form lasting friendships, the students form them with each other as well. So come join us September 6th and 7th in one of the most exciting cities in the world, New York City! 6 Pictures within 10 Minutes from Sunset Paddling on Boyd Lake

Of course, I paddled much longer on the Boyd Lake, but I stopped for 10 minutes in the southern end of the lake to enjoy a magic light just before sunset. I shot several pictures looking north trying different angles, different placement of a horizon, with and without a kayak bow in the frame and switching from horizontal to vertical format. All pictures were shot with Pentax Optio W10 with EV compensation set between -1 and and -1.7 and white balance left on “auto”.

The above 6 pictures were selected from 20+ pictures I shot during that 10 minute photo session. The light was changing. You can see these young flooded cottonwood trees in the light at first, then they went into shadow. It looks quiet and calm, but passing power boats were sending wakes to my tippy photography platform – WSBS Thunderbolt-X kayak. It would be rather embarrassing to flip over in 1 foot deep water.
Then, it was time to look west and shoot the sun and clouds over mountains, but that is another photo story.

This article was originally posted in my old blog on June 26, 2007. I was shooting with Pentax Optio W10 at that time. I have just upgraded my paddling camera to Pentax Optio WG-2 after shooting with W30 for several years.

Miscellaneous Software – Freeware to Create Backups as .7z or .ZIP Files at Two in the Morning

Simple Data Backup is a freeware backup application for Windows that can be configured to turn on your machine automatically to run backups at off-hours.
Most of us could do a better job making backups of our files to ward against hard drive failure, spyware or malware attack, or other disasters. One option for doing this is the freeware Simple Data Backup application for Windows, which can be set up to backup files every day. Depending on your computer setup, it can even wake up your computer to activate and shutdown when done, so you can perform backups at three in the morning, for example.
Files can be backed up directly or compressed as .7z or .zip files. Other options include forcing certain programs to close before backups occur (to help ensure files aren’t locked due to being in use), placing a shortcut to the backup options on your Desktop, and deleting files from the backup if they no longer exist in the source directory. The software even supports a variety of command-line switches….
