Fujifilm has announced the FinePix F800EXR, a raw-capable 20x compact superzoom with built-in WiFi. The F800 uses a 16MP CMOS sensor that offers the company’s dynamic range or noise-optimizing EXR technology. Its stabilized lens offers a 25-500mm equivalent range at apertures of F3.5-5.3. It can also capture 1080p movies and offers P,A,S and M shooting modes. A near-twin of the still-current F770EXR, the F800 omits the older camera’s GPS feature, but introduces WiFi Wireless Image Transfer for Android and iOS devices via the free  ‘Fujifilm Photo Receiver,’ app.

Carbon Fiber and Wood Canoe Paddles in Royalty Free Pictures

25 Jul

I am using lightweight Zaveral paddles for my canoe paddling and racing. However, black carbon fiber is quite challenging to photograph and not really photogenic. So, over years I have gathered a small collection of wooden canoe paddles. Much more fun to photograph. Sometimes, they serve as spares, but mostly they are just photo props.

I am using single blade paddles with my Surfrigger (outrigger canoe), Kruger’s Sea Wind canoe and Spencer Xtreme (racing hybrid canoe for Texas Water Safari). I am also trying them on some of my kayaks, e.g., a recovery alternative paddling for my JKK Supernova kayak.

Here are some of paddle photos from my stock photography portfolio. These and other pictures are available for licensing as royalty free digital downloads starting with $ 2 or/and as prints. If you cannot find what you need in my stock portfolio I can shoot custom designs at affordable prices. Most of my pictures are also available in various stock agencies including Shutterstock, Dreamstime, BigStock, Graphic Leftovers, iStockPhoto.

Do you own an interesting kayak or canoe paddle? Handmade, perhaps? Would you like to get free pictures of your paddles? If you live or paddle nearby in northern Colorado, please let me know. Actually, old, scratched bitten paddles are great photography subjects too.

Canon EOS M: hands-on preview of Canon’s first mirrorless EOS

24 Jul

canon_eosm.png

Canon has, as expected, announced the EOS M – its first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Based around the same 18MP APS-C sensor as the recent EOS 650D/T4i, the EOS M is the first model to use a new, smaller ‘EF-M’ lens mount. It is launched alongside two EF-M lenses that use STM stepper motors optimized for use with the camera’s hybrid AF system. As we’ve seen before in the mirrorless sector, the EOS M is predominantly aimed at the point-and-shoot upgrader market looking for DSLR quality and makes greater use of a 650D-style touch-screen interface. We’ve been using the EOS M for a little while and have prepared a preview, looking in more detail at Canon’s first mirrorless EOS camera and how it handles.

John Clement has been creating sculpture for fourteen years. While he worked towards a MFA at the School of Visual Arts, he did not complete it preferring instead to apprentice to Mark Di Suevero which lead to his love of steel. From 1994 to the present, John’s curvilinear steel sculptures have appeared in exhibitions in California, New York, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, Kanas, Connecticut , Canada, China and Japan. He has permanently installed sculptures in Vancouver, Staten Island, San Francisco, Houston, Macon Georgia, Des Moines, Delray Beach and Palm Springs. Additionally, John has participated in the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale in Canada, The Klenova Sculpture Symposium in Prague,The Czech Republic, the Ubu Sculpture Biennale in Japan, and the Zhengzhou International Sculpture Exhibition in China. Solo exhibitions of his works have been hosted by Buschlen Mowatt Fine Art, Tricia Collins Contemporary Art and Gallery Sonja Roesch.
Artist statement: My sculptures are three- dimensional realizations of imaginary forms. I rely heavily on the artistic process, allowing the work to evolve and mature, eventually become self- referential. Although many of my works are site -specific their form does not directly rely on the surrounding architecture or landscape. The clearly defined positive and negative space of the work, combined with its scale, creates a new framework in which the surroundings can be experienced through the sculpture.

Curvilinear forms of coiled and welded steel, tangential and intersecting, best characterize my work. I choose to work with steel and approach the material first as an artist and second as a craftsman. The success of my work does not rely upon gimmicks or trickery in the materials, but on the implied movement and strength of form of each individual piece. The bright, primary colors used to paint the work serves to bring the form of the work to the forefront, enhancing the sense of the work leaping fro

Mobile photography app Hipstamatic is embracing its growing popularity among photojournalists by creating a new digital lens and film pack named after photojournalist Ben Lowy. Lowy made headlines when his Hipstamatic images documenting life in Afghanistan were published in the New York Times Magazine last fall. The lens and film effects were a collaborative effort between Lowy and Hipstamatic, and will be released later this year as a ‘GoodPak’ – available for purchase (price TBC) within the iPhone app. (via the British Journal of Photography)
