FashionPhotographyBlog.com welcomes back fashion photographer, Yannick Wolff. Last time we caught up with Yannick he just recently shot his men’s business fashion story, titled Pursuit. This time round we are showing another of his stories from a shoot not too long ago with German Olympic swimmer, Yannick Lebherz. Not only does Yannick Wolff shoot fashion, he is also skilled in sports photography. He demonstrates great control in capturing action shots so I asked him if he wouldn’t mind sharing some of his techniques that can applicable to sports fashion photography.
I asked the young photographer why does sports fashion photography is an interest to him, he replied that “Sports fashion photography is a very interesting field, because you have to work with the human body very much. You really have to look if the pose is right, you have to talk and interact with your model a lot and, of course, there is a totally different lightning set up. Sports models tend to be more easy-going because they’re main job is not modelling, it is the sport.”
While trying to find out how he got involved in sports fashion photography, Yannick revealed that he had been a competitive swimmer himself, “I was, and I still am, doing sports all the time. Back in the days I was a swimmer for like 10 years with a 5 day training week, so quite intense. I guess because of this fact I´m grown into the sports photography from the very beginning.”
So that was how Yannick began his journey with sports fashion photography but how does one get to do a shoot with an Olympic athlete? I had to ask, the answer was simple as the photographer explained “Like I said, I was a swimmer as well for 10 years so I’m familiar with this sport. I was in the same swimming club as Yannick Lebherz, the Olympic swimmer I shot the story with. I already had his contact information and I simply asked him for such a shoot. He was very motivated as well. In the end 2 pictures out of the story became the pictures of his new autograph cards.” I think there’s a lesson in that for all of us; if you don’t ask, you won’t get a chance to receive.
