  • Talk of ‘ultrapixels’ leads to speculation about Foveon-like HTC smartphone

    Early tech blog reports suggest HTC’s much-anticipated ‘M7’ smartphone could have a Foveon-like layered sensor. All the information appears to stem from a Pocket-lint report about the phone, expected to be revealed at press events to be held in New York City and London on February 19. The suggestion is that the M7 could have a multi-layer sensor, rather than a conventional 13MP chip with a Bayer filter pattern. Foveon itself once tried to develop a sensor for smartphones and other companies are working on similar concepts. However, we wonder if the story comes from a translation error of Sony’s ‘Stacked CMOS’ technology – which is used in a 13MP Exmor RS sensor.

  • CamRanger offers DSLR control from your iPad

    Developer Dave Pawlowski and his wife Melissa have announced the CamRanger that lets users wirelessly control Canon and Nikon DSLRs to Apple’s iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. The standalone device connects the cameras with a USB cable and creates an ad-hoc WiFi network for the Apple devices. It allows live live view control and playback of images and videos.   • Just Posted: Nikon Coolpix S800c Review

    We’ve just posted our review of the Nikon Coolpix S800c, in collaboration with Jeff Keller of The Digital Camera Resource Page. The S800c was the first compact camera from a major manufacturer to openly use the Android mobile operating system when it was released last year. On one side it’s a 16MP BSI-CMOS compact camera with a 10x, 25-250mm lens built in, on the other it’s a 3.5″ OLED touchscreen device running Android 2.3.   • Milan in Amsterdam

    I met Milan last January when I was in Los Angeles shooting editorial. I had three shoots I had to cast for and while she wasn’t the right fit for the jobs I was shooting for, I knew I HAD to shoot her at some point. When I returned to LA three months later to teach at my LA Workshop I revisited the idea of working with her. I didn’t have a magazine assignment, though. But no worries, I decided I would test with Milan! And I’m really glad I got the opportunity to because she was amazing in front of the camera! In fact, I loved her so much, I just shot her again last month for Jimon Magazine. So look out for that shoot soon as I think the magazine is going to hit the newsstands shortly.


    Milan is 5’9 1/2″ and has the most incredible body! She’s very toned and I wanted to show that banging body of hers, so I lit her with a white beauty dish only. I didn’t diffuse or grid the dish, I really wanted to see a hard line of light right on her skin. Anabel DeHaven from Artists by Timothy Priano did the make up and shined Milan’s skin up making it a nice reflective surface so the light would shine! Jonathan Mason, also from Artists by Timothy Priano, who styled Milan’s hair, simply slicked it back so we could use different head pieces on her. And of course, my dearest friend and one of my favorite stylists, Rodney Burns, pulled the looks together.





    The beauty dish was placed just camera right of Milan, casting a shadow on the backdrop. I used some antique lights in the background mainly for atmosphere. I brought the images back to NYC and had them retouched in NYC. Two months later, while I was Europe, I was honored with an exhibition in Amsterdam displaying some of my fashion work. Since my shoot with Milan had never found a home in a magazine, I thought that she would be great as part of the exhibition. So we printed huge prints of her from this shoot and they were presented in July in Amsterdam. You can read about the show here!


    And oddly enough, this past December, Advance Magazine from Amsterdam wrote me and asked me if I had a story that hadn’t been published that they could run. I showed them Milan and they loved it so they ran her in their January issue! So in the end, Milan found an editorial and now Holland really knows about Milan!

  • Casio’s Jin Nakayama rules-out mirrorless, promising fast future for compacts

    CP+ 2013: Casio wants to make cameras that allow non-photographers to take better images, and that could mean large sensor compacts, says Jin Nakayama, Senior General Manager of the company’s QV Digital Camera Division, but don’t expect a mirrorless camera. The company, which makes some of Japan’s best-selling compacts, has a development strategy Nakayama believes will distinguish it from smartphones while also staying a step ahead of its camera rivals, he says.

    CP+ 2013: Panasonic is considering which cameras it needs to appeal to the different demands for Micro Four Thirds in different countries. We spoke to Michiharu Uematsu, Special Adviser, Imaging Business Group and Yoshiyuki Inoue, Senior Engineering Planner, Marketing Group, Imaging Business Group. They explain the challenges of making and marketing a high image quality compact and suggest the GH3 won’t get focus peaking.

  • Panasonic promises high sensitivity sensors using ‘Micro Color Splitters’

    Panasonic has devised a method to increase the sensitivity of image sensors, by replacing the near-universal colour filter array with prism-like ‘Micro Color Splitters’ to generate colour information. The key advantage is that all of the incoming light is directed to the sensor, instead of half or more being absorbed by the color filter dyes. This promises to deliver images with less noise in low light. The development is published in the journal Nature Photonics, and outlined in a press release on Panasonic’s website.
