What Is Photography
visual art
November 2nd, 2009 – New York, United States

I recently attended a number of different exhibitions of 20th century art in London – notably a Pop Art feature at the Tate Modern, and an Ed Ruscha retrospective at the Hayward Gallery – and the stand-out was definitely that dedicated to the work of John Baldessari, also currently at the Tate. I barely knew his work beforehand, but was taken by the playfulness in many of his pieces, and loved the way he played with the often ambivalent relationship between visual art and the written word.

The work that appears in this photograph is called "What Is Painting" – I’ve respected Baldessari’s curious aversion to the question mark – and is on show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

I took a number of pictures of visitors interacting (or, for the most part, failing to interact) with this painting, and I hesitated between posting this image or one featuring a woman in a bright pink top visibly agonizing over the precise meaning of every word. But there was something about this girl, who can’t have been more than ten or eleven, that captivated me. Like so many visitors to MoMA, she took photographs of almost every picture she saw – but unlike the vast majority, she examined each work before she photographed it, and spent time considering the most interesting angle from which to shoot it. On more than one occasion I wanted to whisper in her ear "Go, girl, go !!" – to encourage her to continue to engage with Art, to challenge it, to seek new meanings in it. But unfortunately, in this day and age, a fortysomething man cannot be seen to approach a pre-pubescent girl, however honest his intentions.

"RADIO FOREST (2005/2009) – AMY FRANCESCHINI & STIJN SCHIFFELEERS / KOEN DEPREZ
Radio Forest was initially developed as a radio station where one could broadcast the moods of the wood. Koen Deprez transformed the small building. He just sliced it and placed a glass border in between. In this way, Radio Forest became a real station for creative workshops in Klankenbos as well as a display window fo

"In Klankenbos (Sound Forest) contemporary artworks produce sounds. Not only are your ears stimulated, you’d better keep your eyes open as well, for the sound installations are fascinating visual artworks which deserve to be looked at. Thus Klankenbos is a special auditory and artistic open air experience, inviting you along a promenade walk at the Provincial Domain Dommelhof in Neerpelt. With its ten stationary and three mobile sound installations Klankenbos is quite unique in Europe."

"SPRINGTIME IN A SMALL TOWN (2006) – PETER BOSCH & SIMONE SIMONS
This installation is all about vibrations. Wooden boxes on springs start wobbling as soon as visitors approach. In a complex system boxes influence each other. Small changes in movement may cause completely different and unexpected soundscapes. The relation order-chaos is under scrutiny in a constant stream of changes. A powerful exp
eriment by the physician Nikola Tesla that induced a tiny earthquake, inspired the creators. Hard- and software development in cooperation with Günter Geiger.

Peter Bosch (NL) has studied psychology and sonology, while Simone Simons (NL) has specialized in audiovisual design. They have been working on autonomous “music machines” since 1990. They both live and work in Spain."

Twenty-four birches are each fitted with a vibrating motor that can be activated from a distance. The vibration makes it possible to control the shaking of the the leaf canopy and generates noise fields that surround the visitor. The group of motorised trees form a sensit

"FLUISTEROREN (2005) – BAUDOUIN OOSTERLYNCK
This mobile sound installation consists of various “prostheses”. They enable the capture of sound that normally cannot be heard by the inadequate human era. The underlying question of this installation relates to where exactly the body fails and what is needed to compensate it. FluisterOren (Dutch for ‘whispering ears’) can be understood as tools to redi
scover the sensitivity of original sound. Their meaning is to be found in their use to find almost inaudible sounds.

Baudouin Oosterlynck (BE) works already 30 years on the topics of hearing and listening. He permanently studies several aspects of acoustics, and also silence intrigues him. He designed some 60 installations and 50 “listening aids” that emphasis the relation between silence and sound."

Sculpture In Context 2012 at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin 9.
6th September to 19th October 2012

Sculpture in Context continues to build on 26 years of experience in organising successful exhibitions. It has, over the years staged highly acclaimed visual arts events at venues such as Fernhill Gardens, the Conrad Hotel, Kilmainham Gaol, the Irish Management Institute, Dublin Castle, Farmleigh House and the National Botanic Gardens.

The gardens are not only a botanical haven, and a quiet oasis on the outskirts of a modern European City, they also offer a challenging venue which gives the artist the rare opportunity of realising large scale work. It also gives the visitor an opportunity to ramble and explore, sometimes finding sculptures in the most unusual places. The sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the visitors’ centre.
