Lesson 1 – Aperture (Tutorial about Photography)

13 Dec

This is a first lesson about photography for beginners. In this lesson I will explain in details what aperture means and how it is used. We will also talk about F-stops and DOF (Depth of Field). I hope you will enjoy my photography tutorials and can learn how to use your camera better. Music: Kevin MacLeod. (Licensed under Creative Commons “Attribution 3.0”)

It’s not about diameter, it’s about a ratio. f/1.4 actually means that the width of the aperture is the width of the lens divided by 1.4. So, with a 50mm lens, 1.4 is going to be about 35.71mm. But, on a 135mm lens, 1.4 would be 96.43mm wide.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t actually have any 96mm wide lenses. So, they use complicated optics inside of the lens to provide “equivalent” aperture widths using the magnification factors of the optics inside of the lens.

yes,,,but can you answer this,,,take off a lens,,it has a small opening in back for light,,,another lens,,take off camera,,it has a big opening,,both lenses at 1.4 open,,but they both have different openings,,or lens holes,,so at 1.4,,both lenses have wider openings than the other because they have different opening on back of lens,,1.4 is not same,,small hole and bigger hole in lens,,,do you understand???why can it be called 1.4 if the lenses back openings are different,,,??

Great video. I am a newbie to DSLR shooting. I am a videographer who has worked for years with video cameras, but now with the different lens possibilities on DSLR and HD video am taking the plunge for better wedding details, preps and more control over Depth of field just not possible with video cameras without interchangeable lenses. Old dog learning new tricks. your tutorial was perfect for someone like me. will be watching more. thanks for taking the time

If your lens only can go to f2.8 (as a widest aperture), you will not be able to set your camera to f1.4. The camera can detect the possibilities of your lens in terms of aperture. The lens determines the aperture, not the camera and different lenses have different aperture range.

Excellent video. Thank you for sharing it.
But I have one question: If I have a prime lens of lets say 50mm and aperture 2.8, but I set the f stop in my camera at 1.4, what determines the correct aperture: the lens (remember in this example it can not go under 2.8)? or the camera at 1.4?
Thank you and keep the good vids!!
