This week is the third episode in a series about shooting video on a DSLR camera. HDSLR cameras are capable of producing remarkable images but they are all pretty awful in the audio department. In order to combat these audio issues Mark will show a number of different microphones and audio devices that can be used to ensure that you’re getting the best audio. In the coming weeks, he will go over basic editing techniques as well as compressing for the web- so stay tuned!

There are also microphones that have two (2) microphones built in, where one of them is pointing to the left and recording onto the left channel and one is pointing to the right and recording to the right channel. When you play this back, you hear a difference on the right and left channel and get a stereo experience. THAT is “real” stereo.

All professional microphones are recording one channel and putting them on both Left and Right hand tracks. All of your 5.1 and 7.1 surround is done in post.
The reason they call it a stereo mic is because it does record to both channels where as a mono mic records to either left or right.

I think it is very misleading to call it “stereo”. Surely when i record with the Røde NTG 3 i can also get to play back the sound of its 1 signal on all 7 speakers of a surround system, that doesnt make the microphone a “7.1 surround mic”. Depending on your recording device you can choose whether you want to record the mono sound of the NTG 3 onto a mono track (which lets you hear it only on the left side) or stereo track, but the mic is still mono!

‘Mono’ means single channel. It’s recording on both channels so it’s ‘stereo’.. 🙂

Actually i dont think the Røde NTG 3 is stereo. It surely records on both channels, but it is the same signal on the left and right channel. So “mono” that is played back on 2 speakers.

I believe the signal to noise ratio hasreferences the internal noise from the electronics and not from the external environment.

Very nice audio. I think too many people are caught up in video and I swear audio is 75% of the project. Why does everyone hold the mic above? Clearly in this shot it could have placed on a stand below the mouth.
