Shutter speed does not affect f/stop, so you will still get a shallow depth of field, but with a slight bit more motion blur.
The zoom thing is typical, because lenses have a lower maximum aperture at longer focal lengths.

Great tutorial. Two questions. If you have to adjust the shutter speed to match florescent bulbs, will you lose the film like look you would you would normally achieve using 1/50 of a second? Also, I noticed a change in light when using a zoom lens with a friends dslr. As the he zoomed out, the picture became brighter. Is this typical or just an odd instance?

the filmic look? Well, unless you are producing for cinema, it won’t happen. TV and youtube are compressed
You want the film look. Use a film camera, and even then, only for cinema

Not sure I understand about the shutter speed in relation to the florescent lights. If the lights are say 60Htz then what should my shutter speed be? 1/60 of a second??Also is it the same in Canada as USA?
Thanks,
Hunter

What I have heard is that Canon will update the 7D before upgrading the 5D Mark II. W/ the Sony Alphas having better auto focus during video shooting in their SDLRs (while still not great) is a step in the right direction for competion!
I do have a question: When shooting videos with the 5D, The mirror stays up, the 1st and 2nd curtains stay open so what goes on in the camera when manually changing the shutter speed during video shooting with the 5D? Is it with the electronics

The difference is that the canon 5d mark 2 is more affordable than the red one. However the Red one has more to offer in a cinematic sense, due to it’s available options. But we are talking a full on cinematic camera vs a D-slr meant for the general public and professionsals alike. I believe the more affordable red ones they have coming out just wont be able to compete with the canon slr’s. But thier 25k camera has alot to offer, if you are working on a full production set.

Yes. We shot it on a 550D with a Zeiss 50mm f1.4 and a macro adapter.

Basically Canon have no reason to bring a 5D MK III in, it still selling well, there is nothing else like it on the market, it has a bigger sensor than the RED Scarlet or red one i think and it has better ISO noise performance, so they just wanna milk it as much as possible, i really would start expecting to see a 5D MK III at the earliest mid to late 2011

Great tutorial but you should insert video examples to illustrate what you are talking about (shutter speed, grain, white balance …)
