After a long day of shooting, here in my hotel room I run through 5 tips that will help things go smoothly on the big day. Not to be alarmist – but it is a tough gig if you want to do it properly, so think things through, plan, and give it your very best. oh another question if you don’t mind: do you feel confident with speedlights only during a wedding or do you back it up with some more powerful strobe lights as well?

great info thanks! You talked about the autofocus and continuous shooting speed of your D4 – I’m thinking about getting a D800 and that body obviously can’t keep up in terms of speed/autofocus but I’m aware of that.
I’d just like to know what are the rather fast-paced situations you are facing during a wedding where it might get tricky? thanks mate

In my country, that’s usually the host’s/EMCEE’s job. There’s usually someone in charge of that at church, right after the ceremony (mostly a relative). From what I observe, though, there hasn’t been much communication between the photographer(s) and host/ess.

see my video on time management. I work long days. My spare time is wife, family and friends. I don’t watch TV, I don’t ‘waste’ a lot of time – I use my time on things that are important to me 🙂

I would like to ask you, and this is a very personal question, but do you have time left to be with your wife ? I am nowhere as experienced as you are, only a passionate amateur, but i find myself being consumed by watching a lot of videos on photography, and then shooting, so i can really imagine, if your doing this as a full-time job, your whole day your on location, and i imagine that the post process time is 2-3x longer then the actual shoot, working on weekends too.

Good question. I normally start with the FULL group shot before people start drinking or run off. THen I make it clear – All the grooms family stay for shots, and brides family stay over THERE and we will call you in 10 minutes. Then the couple and bridal party can help identify people… you need to be ‘part of the team’ rather than an outsider. I wouldnt hesitate for a second to ask one of the parents – which person is ‘steve’, we need him for this shot.

so when the bride/groom gives you a list of the people they want you to photograph, how do you know who is who at the event? you have a list with 20 names how do call them or find them? Thank you.

A lot of the time, P will serve the purpose of shooting perfectly. You don’t always need to carefully set up before every photo, especially if you have to do things quickly.
