Studio Lighting Basics

31 Jan

cazillo.com Everyone wants to learn studio lighting! It can be the pinnacle of photography: being able to control every nuance of a photograph from the quality of light to the person’s pose. Control also requires the experience to create a good image. My video today I go over how to get started in studio photography with building your own lighting kit and some basic posing techniques I use on a regular basis.

Hello there, are you familiar with “Photo SFXart Tricks” (do a Google search for it)? On their website you will find a great free video demonstrating the best way to create brilliant photos. It made it easier for Joe to shoot pictures that leave you with a jaw-dropping-effect any time you look at them. I hope it will work for you as well.

True, yet it should be told, as for the fact he tells about the umbrellas, those are aiming and distorting(frosting) ways also.

That doesn’t really fit into a ‘basics’ video.

You should tell them about daylight correction filters for the external light. Filters such as Lee 202, Lee 201, Lee 200(blue/white) and Lee 152, Lee 151, Lee 150 (brown/gold) These are called CTO filters, they make the light temperature from halogen or gas lights to sunlight color temperature. This assures for more natural pictures, for a softer light use a distortion filter or a blur filter.

Greg, just wanted to say that I know sometimes it feels good for others to recognize you and your hard work. That being said, thank you for your hard work and for all the things you do to further the photographic community. I saw you on Jared’s stuff a long long time ago and I had NO idea you had your own stuff. I’m not sure what all happened between you guys, but its none of my business either way. The point is, your stuff is great and I respect and appreciate all you’ve done and continue to do

$150 isn’t really “inexpensive”, perhaps “affordable” is better.

For studio / portrait photography do you recommend the continuous lighting or would you recommend to use speed lights through the same setup (3 point lighting setup)?

I think I need to start balancing my videos. I’ve been in the habit of never doing it for photos but video is different.

Damn, this is what I was looking for when I stumbled across Jared. Sorry but photo of the week is boring now, only thing I learned from him, is how to edit, and how to add a ton of contrast to an image. In no way have I learned to take a picture from him. I am a professional and do this for a living. This is the good shit! Keep the video’s coming!
