WP Photography – Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR1 Review (with Nikon TC-20E II)

21 Jan

A video review of my new lens, the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR and Nikon’s 2x teleconverter. This lens was purchased for my portraiture work but today I took it to a country park to test it out as a setup for wildlife photography to play with the teleconverter. The lens is fantastically sharp and I try to cover all the main points about this lens that make it worth the money it costs. A very good lens for all kinds of work. I hope to show it again in a video of how I use it most and where I think it is best, portraiture. Any questions or comments, fire away! Wow! With the D300S and this 70-200mm f/2.8 you are getting 200 x 1.5 x 2 = 600mm lens at f/5.6! Amazing!

Both are great! I personally think the silentwave motor on the VRII is the only improvement nikon has made!

The first version is reportedly better for portraits, because at 200mm with the VR2, the true focal length is significantly less than that of the VR1. The result, of course, is that you cannot achieve as shallow a DOF with the VR2, as you can with the VR1 (unless I misunderstood…).

I also would like to know – anyone who has tried both, please let me know!

    – enjoy it! I sold because the job I started restricted my time for photography and seeing as wildlife photography was something I did in my free time I didn’t get the use out of it. It was a very good bit of kit and I will still recommended it!

Just bought one from eBay for $1500. Why did you sell your TC? Weren’t you getting what you expected?

    – go for it, 70-200 is a fantastic lens you wont regret buying. I have now sold my TC as it didn’t get enough usage but it was very good

Great feedback re the 70-200. Just bought mine off eBay for $1725.00 AU. Close to what you paid for yours but without the tele converter. Keep up the good reviews.

Boring. Stating the obvious reviews. Pay for what you get

It is a very good lens! Thanks for letting me know about the Tamron, interesting to hear peoples real life reviews. I just sold my teleconverter because it wasn’t getting enough use. Personally, I believe you get much better results from the lens without the TC and I much prefer using it without, hence the reason I sold. If you need the extra reach, maybe consider the 300mm f/4 for better IQ.

Awesome review!! I recently bought this lens for portraits and weddings and I’m impressed by it every time I take a picture with it! I had the Tamron equivalent and kept coming up short and being disappointed, especially in it’s AF speed. I recently started looking at getting a teleconverter which is why I came across your video. But, like the lens, the 2x converters are very hard to come by and are backordered most places online. Thanks again for the video!
