My Giant 12lbs Lobster

20 Jan

Music by PeterSatera, Song is “Artificial Inteli Evolved” check out more of his music here petersatera.newgrounds.com creativecommons.org So check it out I caught another monster of a lobster while shore diving off the California Coast. Biggest I’ve ever grabbed. Can’t tell you the spot cause then it wouldn’t be a secret 😉 But I normally dive anywhere from San Diego, Orange County, Palos Verdes, to Catalina Island. I grabbed this one a while ago, but just got around to editing the video today. If anyone’s wondering if this one’s recent. Shot this video with my gopro HD and my camera a Nikon D90. All credit goes to my friend Josh for filming it for me.

its all to do with geography, where you are, these are known as spiny lobsters, the ones with claws are known as american lobsters, and the frestwater lbosters are known as crayfish. however in Austrialia the spiny lobsters are known as crayfish and the fresh water lobsters are known as yabbies

Bro sweet catch! I wish the Hawaiian spiny lobsters grew to that size! My biggest spiny would have to have been half that size!

Crayfish do not look like huge shrimp. A crayfish (in the United States) is a freshwater crustacean that looks like a miniature lobster. And not all lobsters have claws, California lobsters have none.

Search “crayfish united states”. That’s what we call crayfish in our country.

I sometimes actually just strap on scuba gear and make a double activity. With that setup, I can usually find bugs pretty quickly, and I’m under for a short enough time that a spring suit with a vest is sufficient. Makes the hunt a bit less pure of course, but I can get to more places…

I like to stay out for a few hours usually. 1-1.5 hours is just a rough guess. Some people can’t stand the cold and would not even last 30 minutes. That’s why it’s always best to be as covered as possible in the water. You’ll need a weight belt also to sink to the bottom, since your wetsuit will keep you buoyant.

You should check the website “Spearboard” in the California section and search for all these questions. There is boatloads of information about spearfishing on there and locations.

Thanks! I appreciate it! How long do people usually stay in the water to catch those critters? To me 1-1.5 hr is quite sometime. Mine is only 3.4 a spring suit. Main items I need is the snorkel, gauge, and lobster card since I got a fishing license already. We’re from Norcal & will be going down there this weekend for a roadtrip & try to catch our own dinner, so this is all new to us. Is there an area meant for lobster divers in S.D.? 1 thing we don’t want to do is find out an area is off limit.

Tasted like all the other lobsters. Just had to cut the tail in to smaller sections before cooking it. A spring suit is going to make you cold and shiver the longer you stay in the water, might work for an 1 to 1.5 hours. I wear a 5mm full body freediving suit, gloves, and booties. Regular fins work until you have enough money to buy freediving fins. Don’t forget to bring a snorkel. You’ll also need a lobster gauge, lobster card, and a fishing license to legally hunt lobsters in California.

Hi abzde, Awesome catch! Congrats! How did the monster taste? Do you think a spring suit is good enough to be used in San Diego? also regular swimming fin and googles is fine right? I will be going out there for my first time in a week or two and want suggestions, thanks.
