The 60D only allows you to control two groups of flashes independently. So you can have one flash in group A and another in Group B and control them separately. You could have the popup flash enabled and control it independently as a third group. Unfortunately on the 60D you can’t control a C group independently. You can have multiple flashes in group A or B but for ex. all the A’s would be controlled at the same power setting and likewise with the B’s. FYI the 7D does allow for a C group.

For portraits I really like a 50mm, 85mm or 105mm if I have the space for. I tend to go for the 85mm the most, then the 50mm and 105 if I have enough room to backup. I’ve kind of been back and forth between primes and zooms and I tend to lean a bit more to the primes because of the quality and the fact that you can get them at f/1.4 or f/1.8 at a reasonable price. I hope this helps.

It works about about the same way as the 430EXII. Basically set it to slave mode and follow the same procedures. The 60D popup flash will control almost all of the EX line flashes.

Thanks Mark! I guess I was thinking the camera could trigger the external flash without pop up flash. I get it now, thanks! Thanks for your videos. Happy New Year!!!

It’s wireless because there are no wires running from the camera to the flash. The 60D cannot trigger a 430EXII (or any EX flash) without using the pop flash. The popup flash is what is used to signal and control the remote flashes via infra-red. If you use the newer 600EX-RT with the ST-E3 the 600EX would then be controlled via radio vs infra-red. The wireless system on 430EX works great as long as you have a good line of sight from the camera to the flash.

If the pop up flash on the camera is triggering the external flash where does the wireless come in to the picture? Can the Canon 60D trigger the Canon 430 EXII without using the pop up flash?

If you control any Canon ETTL flash using the popup your max is 1/250. That’s just using this setup. A manual flash like a Vivitar 285HV, Yongnuo 560II, etc is only going to get a max of 1/250.If you control a flash like the 430EXII with a 580EXII as the master on the hot shoe, your max is 1/8000 via ETTL HSS. If you use the Pocketwizard Flex System (miniTT1//FlexTT5) with Canon branded flashes you can achieve up to 1/8000 via radio triggering. The built trigger on the 60D is maxed at 1/250.

If the pop flash is stuck down, there’s an easy fix for it. There’s a micro switch on the hotshoe that is stuck that is preventing it from popping up. Search Youtube for “60D popup flash fix” and you’ll find a video that shows you how to get it to release. HTH

What you’re seeing is the pre-flash. It fires a split second before the actual flash exposure. The popup flash firing is necessary to control remote flashes and there’s no way to turn it off. If you did, remote wouldn’t work. Since the popup pre-flash fires before the actual it doesn’t contribute to the image… most of the time. If you’re close to your subject you may catch a bit of the tail end of the pre-flash in the exposure. You’ll also see the tail of the pre-flash in mirrored objects.

Unfortunately HSS does not work with the popup flashes on the Canon cameras. This is the one thing that Nikon excels in. While their popup won’t work over the x-sync speed it will allow remote flash to go over x-sync to achieve HSS. While I love the way Nikon flashes work, it’s not enough to make me switch.

Great stuff… thanks a lot! One question, you set it up to only fire the external flash but I think I saw the pop-up flash firing as well… am I right? if so, what happened? is there a way to only fire the external flash? Thanks 🙂

I’m using a Giottos MT-9251 which has since been discontinued. The current model is the MT-9261. For the ball head I’m using a Manfrotto 486RC2 which has also been discontinued. It is now replaced with the 496RC2. I got everything from BHPhoto.
