The number of your shutter speed should be double that of your fps. For example, if you are shooting in 24fps, the shutter speed should ideally be 1/48th of a second. Since the 600D doesn’t have that, just go with 1/50th. This gives you a film like motion blur. So if you’re shooting 60fps, have your shutter speed at 1/120th. You can play with this based on the look you want. E.g.: if you make your shutter speed faster it gives you a more jarring, intense, Saving Private Ryan type look.

This is an excellent example of a limitation of shooting video (not film) with a DSLR – no audio inputs. Sound has to be recorded externally and then synced. Obviously, when video edits were made no one re-synced the audio (HDSLR’s released in 2012 have added audio inputs but they aren’t XLR).

However, even though the sound isn’t synced I watched the entire episode because the audio content was so good. Thanks, Vincent.

I have a canon 600D and want to do some videos. Is the shutter speed matters? how much should it be? Thanks

Lol the part that Vicent discussing the difference with Still photographer is that they can work alone, enjoy the quiet, and being a one-man production are completely untrue when comes to Fashion, Commerical and a lot of the other types of photography. They are often working with a huge team of designers, MUAs, stylists, assistnats, directors, models and etc. much similar to a video/film production crew.

I found this a very interesting and insightful course introduction. I would stress the introduction aspect, but it makes you think about the concepts and basics from a different angle, even if you have some experience or knowledge of film/video making. Worth the time investment, I appreciate you guys taking the time to put this together and for making it free online. Nice job.

Whyyy saying all that shit about photographer ? it’s not the truth ! Are good fashion photographer (like was Helmut Newton) working alone and talking to nobody. Let’s talk about Eugene Smith, William Klein, etc They are Humanist, their first interest is life and people ! It’s really horrible what you are saying ! The rest of your speech is cool. Nevertheless..
