www.emmettlollis.com – I just got my Canon EOS 60D today. I decided to do a recording test using the 60D for video and the Zoom H4n for audio. I’m very pleased with this combination. The audio and HD video are both fantastic when combined. Yes the focus is a little blurry but I’m still learning the features. I also made some test clips at a concert tonight and that came out great as well. Be sure to visit my site and don’t forget to view this video in HD!

www.arthurwoo.com Had a chance to watch and record the band “Makru” — great music! I’ve had my Zoom h4n for a couple of weeks and it was a good test to see how the audio was coming out of the main mixing board. The quality I got on the recording was pretty good! The low end isn’t a beefy as I’d normally like. With that I would have had to use the mics on the Zoom recorder to get some of the ambient sounds, but I wasn’t able to do so due to the set up of the mixer and the outputs they had available. It was recorded to the “external” mic 1 plug on the back of the Zoom. Kit used: Canon 60D Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 LCDVF 3:2 Zoom H4N Plugged into the main output of the mixing board

There is a Sescom cable you need to assist to lowering of the audio from the H4N to the camara.

It varies depending on the situation but I’ve found that when the mic is picking up too much external noise such as the hum of my computer when I’m close, an easy solution is to lower the input level when recording and just boost the volume back up in post production. Works great in a lot of cases.

Hi, good sound quality. how were you able to reduce the hum noise? i tried doing the same thing and going outside. H4n captured all the sound. thanks

I used to connect it with a short 3.5mm audio cable but I found that the auto gain still messed up the audio that was recorded to the camera so now I just let the camera record its own audio, then I use that track to sync up the audio recorded with the H4n and mute the camera audio track in post production.

Is this the only way to use the audio of the Zoom instead of the camera? I have been using the line out on the H4N to go into the mic input on the 60D and the sound I get is definitely not the same level of quality as the H4n, but it is different than just using the internal mic. It sounds almost as if I am getting a combination of the audio of both but I know the manual states that this is not how it works.

I’m getting a lot of ambient noise or hiss with my Zoom H4N.

I use 60D and H4n, have been doing some tests. If I plug the 3.5mm on the back, I would not be able to use the built-in mic for ambiance sound. I think 2x XLRs are the only options to work with built-in mics.

Hi!! im thinking about buying h4n to record audio from live shows, by connecting it to my main mixer. but i would like to use the onboard mics to capture ambient sound from the venue. why couldn’t you do that in this video?

Most of the shows I’ll be at will be close to the stage(local shows) until I can get a decent portfolio together to get press passes for the bigger ones and such. I also have the kit lens which is 18-135mm that I’ll probably use until then for shooting far away until I can upgrade to a better telephoto lens. Thanks for the help

Yeah I swear I put 17-50mm last night but it was pretty late lol. I’m looking to shoot a lot of concerts and live events(like what I have on my channel) and was looking for a good lens for that to go with the 60D I just got. Thanks for the input, that’s what I was looking for.

How do you like the Sigma 15-55 f2.8? I was looking into it and have a similar set up with my 60D pair with the H1
