I tried it out in a quasi-experiment and came to the obvious conclusion that the less power or the higher the f-stop, the darker the color – red vs. pink. I made a vid demonstrating this and posted it as a video reponse, else it is on my channel.

a darker colour…….. are two different things. colour (ie red to blue) darker /lighter is on the tone scale (more white more black) if you want a red to be more red i would say use more red, if you want it to be darker then less power….
    not too sure
try it out yourself and send me the answer!

Exactly my question – which is it that makes a darker color in the photo; less power or stacking gels? – or are these the same thing?

are you asking darker (ie less power) or stronger colour (more gel filters)

How would you make the gel’s light a darker color? – decreasing the flash’s output?

Thanks for the great ideas Dom. I am into extreme light painting or rather taking it to bigger objects… I am (as far as I know, the first and only person to light pain Durdle Dor in Dorset!.
Interesting one this, Going back to Spaded’s question, I looked up the SB800 on Amazon and it is more expensive than an SB900? What on earth is going on…

    Cheers..
