Sean Thackrey is a winemaker, indeed, but he is so much more: an archivist, historian, linguist, photographer, art collector. Thackrey shares his views on the importance of barrels, respect for ancient techniques like letting grapes rest, the word terroir (he hates it), and much more. For wine aficionados, hes an inspiration. For wine novices, hes a deep source of knowledge.

Why, exactly, is he a douche? He seemed really unpretentious, offbeat and an interesting person in general. And clearly can make a mean bottle of wine.

01:26 – he’s pouring from a bottle covered in duct tape which extends to the rim of bottle. So you are getting traces of adhesive from the back of the tape into your wine.

I love his position on terroir, I agree every vineyard is different and ones are better and there are so many things that can effect the berries. The soil, the light, the way the sun hits it or if a cool fog rolls in in the morning. But, just say that don’t label such a vague word. Also, you can take the same grapes to two wine makers and they will give to different grapes.

After fermentation it doesn’t really matter, the alchohol kills it.

I really like this guy…he reminds me of an old friend. Not necessarily a real friend I have, just the way he speaks to the camera and how it was directed. Well, done. Impressive library! But let’s be frank here…the man has a group that meets just to keep Latin alive. See, that’s cool.

Loved this video. I’m really missing the ‘Obsessives’ series in the latest updates. Really wish that it would make a come-back.
