We tour Nikon’s Sendai factory

Covering almost 27,000 square meters of floor space, Nikon’s Sendai factory in the T?hoku region North of Japan has been churning out cameras and lenses since 1971. I had the opportunity recently to visit Sendai during events to mark the launch of Nikon’s new Z mount.

This was my second visit to the Sendai facility, and while much has changed since my first trip back in 2007, Nikon’s commitment to security at the factory has not. None of the journalists present on our tour were permitted to take photographs or notes of any kind, and all of the images in this article were supplied – without captions – by Nikon.

As such, you might find that my descriptions of the processes shown in these images are less specific than some of our previous factory tours, but I hope you find this article interesting and illuminating nonetheless.

Nikon’s Sendai factory opened in 1971, and aside from a brief three-week interruption caused by the earthquake of 2011, it has been operational ever since. Currently home to 352 employees, this facility is where Nikon’s pro-grade D5 is made, along with the new Z7 and the F6: Nikon’s professional film SLR.

At the heart of any interchangeable lens camera is the mount. Nikon makes body and lens flanges for both the F and Z mount at Sendai, from brass and stainless steel. While professional-grade ILCs (D5/D850/Z7) utilize stainless steel for their mounts for maximum strength, Nikon’s enthusiast range (D500 and below) use brass. Brass is softer and easier to machine than steel, but deforms more easily. This makes it risky for the Z mount, with its short flange-back distance of only 16mm.

On the lens side, Nikon’s low-end consumer zooms use plastic mounts, and all of the rest employ brass.

After being drilled and milled by automated CNC machines, the mounts are checked. This image shows a new stainless steel Z mount, which features a 55mm inner diameter – much wider than the 1950s-era F-mount, and more able to accommodate ultra wide-aperture lenses. Despite the arrival of the Z-mount, Nikon is at pains to stress that the F-mount isn’t going anywhere, with one executive describing F and Z to me as “two wheels running our business”.

These are the rear shells of Nikon’s new Z7 – Nikon’s first high-end mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, which is being manufactured here alongside the D5. The Z6 is a little bit further out, and when I visited Sendai last month it had not yet entered mass-production.

New technologies call for new manufacturing processes, and while much inside the Sendai facility line looked familiar from my last visit, the Z7’s assembly line is very different from the traditional ‘cell’ manufacturing layout of the past.

Previously, an individual worker might complete a limited number of steps (or sometimes just a single step) before passing the camera along to the next of many ‘stations’. These days, a single technician might work on a single component or camera chassis for some time, performing a series of complex steps in parallel with their co-workers before passing it on down the line.

The technicians’ lives are made easier by new custom jigs, which hold the Z7 chassis securely and allow the camera to be quickly rotated in order for sub-assemblies to be attached to either side. This is quicker (and probably considerably more comfortable over hundreds of actions) than the worker having to rotate the camera in her hands.

Anyone familiar with ‘kaisen’ concepts of continuous process optimization will recognize this focus on improving ergonomics as a way of increasing productivity and consistency.

Not shown in these pictures is a very neat automatic screw-dispenser, which guides technicians through the type and number of screws required for each step, and the order in which they should be attached. The screws are dispensed from a series of overhead trays and grabbed by the technician using magnetic screwdrivers. LED displays count down the required screws for each sub-process, so that there’s no risk of missing a step.

This is a stack of printed circuit boards, awaiting incorporation into Z7 bodies. Not shown in any of these images is one of the most visually interesting element of the Z7’s assembly line: large ‘CARL’ (pronounced ‘Carol’) assembly robots, which take care of a lot of the ultra high-precision assembly steps inside sealed assembly units.

CARL stands for ‘computer automated robotic assembly’ and the CARLs themselves look like scaled-down versions of the large robotic arms used in modern car manufacturing. Capable of swapping their own tool heads multiple times when working on a single assembly, the CARLs move quickly and with extraordinary precision – which is precisely the point.

Inside the Z7 is a newly-developed, Nikon-designed BSI-CMOS sensor that is closely related to the 47MP chip used in the D850. We didn’t see this stage of assembly – presumably because of the more stringent environmental hygiene requirements of any space in which sensor components are processed.

The Z7’s shutters are manufactured in-house, and each shutter unit is tested and adjusted individually prior to being incorporated into the camera bodies. Nikon’s shutter testing procedure is an evolution of processes originally designed for the high-precision shutter used in the F4, released thirty years ago.

The Z7’s high-resolution viewfinder wasn’t even dreamt of when the F4 was released. Here, several EVF units sit in a tray awaiting incorporation into Z7 camera bodies.

The Z7’s EVF is excellent, thanks in part to the unusual complexity of its optics. The optical unit contains multiple lenses including an aspherical element, and the viewfinder assembly, centering and checking processes that I saw in Sendai were extremely similar to those I’ve seen in modern lens factories.

Here, physically complete Z7 bodies sit on a carousel awaiting final QC. Once firmware is loaded into the physically-complete cameras, technicians check test images and video footage on every Z7 using the ‘load settings interface’, to make sure that everything plays back as it should on-screen and over HDMI.

Some checks – like that one – are performed on every single Z7 that leaves Sendai, while others (such as environmental or durability tests which might involve deliberately testing parts to destruction) are performed on random samples from the line. Nikon told us that each Z7 is checked more than 100 times during assembly.

A completed Z7 undergoes a manual check, prior to final testing. As you may have gathered, a lot of manual tests and checks are carried out at Sendai but roughly 76% of the Z7’s manufacturing is automated, compared to 55% for the D5.

The final testing process (which again, unfortunately, we can’t show you) is one of the most space-age looking parts of the entire Z7 manufacturing line. Finished cameras are placed in carrier frames and ingested into a very large, long, sealed case inside of which are several (Dave Etchells counted 16 and I have no reason to doubt him) mounts on a large panel.

Robotic arms pick up Z7 bodies and present them to the mounts, after which an unspecified number of tests are run, for undisclosed reasons – possibly color response calibration and/or exposure meter baselining. Once the tests are complete, the robotic arms pluck the Z7s from the mounts and out they come, ready to be boxed and shipped.

I wish I could show you a little more of Nikon’s Sendai factory, but Nikon is understandably very protective over the proprietary processes involved in manufacturing its high-end cameras and lenses. I’m more than happy to respect the company’s wishes here, in exchange for a rare chance to once more see inside the facility.

When I last visited Nikon in Sendai 11 years ago the then-new D3 and D300 were coming off the production lines, but the Z7 is a different beast altogether, and requires a different approach to manufacturing. Despite the increased amount of automation involved in creating the Z7, I was impressed by the sheer number of QC steps that Nikon has inserted into the camera’s assembly. Anyone contemplating investing thousands of dollars into a new camera must be reassured to know that it’s been checked more than 100 times before even making it out of the factory.

5 Road Trip Photography Tips – Come Home with Great Photos

Who doesn’t love a good road trip? You pick a destination, plan your route, pack up your stuff in the car, and hit the road. For many, the open road signifies freedom, opportunity, exploration, and adventure. As much time as you spend planning out a road trip, you never know what surprises may be out there waiting.

It’s exciting! It’s truly an iconic American experience. There will be moments and memories you plan to capture and a whole host of others you won’t want to forget.

On every traveler’s packing list is a camera. Whether that’s your phone, a simple point and shoot, or a DSLR, you want to make sure you’ve brought something to capture your experience. So, how do you make sure you’re getting the best possible photos?

What are some tips and pointers for capturing all of those memories? Here are a few quick tips that you can use to make sure you can do the best road trip photography possible.

1. Research Your Spot

Thanks to the internet and social media, you can search for any destination online and see photographs others have taken. This is a great way to see what attractions, large or small, await you. A quick search of the highway or road you’re going to take, the cities you’re going to pass through, may bring up unexpected and worthwhile stops.

Another really helpful tip is to research your destination on social media. A quick search on Instagram or Facebook will reveal all of the top spots that other photographers have found. This will be helpful to make sure you don’t miss a monument, historical landmark, or site along the way.

But, it’s also really helpful to find all of those hidden gems that only the locals or seasoned travelers might know about.

2. Plan and Pack

If you’re a photographer hitting the open road, packing your camera gear is almost as important, if not more so, to you than remembering your toothbrush. Depending on the trip, you may have enough room to bring all your gear or you might have to limit yourself.

Take note of important things like the locations you’re going to be driving through, the time of year you’ll be driving, what kind of photographs you’ll want to take, and the weather. All of these components will affect what kind of gear you will need to bring with you.

It can be easy to get carried away or get overwhelmed and not pack the right things. So, take a minute and think through what your most useful and crucial gear might be given where you are traveling. What is going to help you capture those can’t miss moments the best?

It is always better to have a few extra pieces of gear to ensure you have what you need rather than miss a moment.

A quick list of things to consider as you plan and prep:

  • Will you be walking a lot at your destinations?
  • Will your gear be safe at your destinations?
  • What time of year is it?
  • What will the weather be like where you’re going?
  • Do you need any accessories (i.e. tripod, filters, reflectors)?
  • What is the one camera/lens combo you can’t live without?

3. Prepare a Go-Bag

Any time you’re on a road trip it is vital to have a setup close-by and ready to go. This means a versatile lens, your camera, a fully charged battery, and your settings already set up.

You can pack up the bulk of your gear elsewhere in the car but keep your camera bag or an additional bag with all of these necessary items next to you. It will help you in a pinch. You never know when you might see a great scene out the window as a passenger or when you’ll want pull over to capture an unexpected sight or beautiful landscape.

It is helpful to keep a short list of must-have gear for your go-bag so you can quickly pack one at any time. Some of these items may include:

  • Camera bag
  • A tripod
  • Fully charged batteries
  • Camera body and lenses
  • Dust cloth, air blower, or any tool you use to remove dirt and dust from your gear
  • Filters
  • Memory cards

4. Slow Down and Expect the Unexpected

You can plan, and you can prepare. You can have a list of all of your top spots ready and marked on your route. As important as all of these tips are, being ready for the unexpected is just as important.

If you see something cool or unique, stop and take a photograph. If you pull off into a little town, take some time to walk around and keep your eyes peeled so you don’t miss an interesting photo opportunity. Don’t let the excitement of heading to the next destination keep you from missing out on a great photograph.

Remember to carve out time to slow down and see the sights both with and without your camera.

How to Boost Your Post-Processing Skills With a Graphics Tablet

During the course of your love affair with photography, you’ll use many different pieces of equipment. Some you’ll purchase, some you’ll beg, borrow, or steal. They will all serve one purpose or another. Some you may love so much that you keep forever. Most you won’t.

You don’t hear me talk about gear often. Over time I’ve worked hard to simplify my gear, and as a travel photographer, I’ve had to be ruthless in shedding excess size and weight. Every now and then, however, you come across a tool that is so valuable to your workflow that you can’t imagine working without it. One of those tools for me is a graphics tablet.

I’ve been using a tablet for quite a few years now, and it’s totally worth the extra weight in my bag. When I sold everything I owned and bought a one-way ticket to travel the world with my camera, I found space for my tablet. It has revolutionized my post-processing, and it can revolutionize yours too.

What is a Graphics Tablet?

A graphics tablet is a device that allows you to use a stylus instead of a mouse to control the cursor on your computer screen. They come in many sizes and offer a variety of features. They work by pointing at or drawing on the surface of the tablet with the stylus, which transfers your movements onto your screen. Most come with buttons on the stylus and on the tablet, which you can configure to act as mouse buttons or keystrokes.

They range from small tablets with no buttons all the way up to huge displays where you can draw directly onto the screen, much like an iPad. They often include features like pressure-sensitivity, allowing extremely precise controls that come in very handy when drawing.

Why Use a Tablet?

You might be asking yourself what’s so special about a tablet. What’s wrong with a good old mouse? I used to feel the same way until I tried using one. The humble mouse works fine for everyday computer usage, but it’s severely limited when it comes to photo editing.

Have you ever found yourself getting frustrated while trying to edit some fine details in a photo and having to go back over and over again? When you use a mouse, you’re relying on the movements of the large muscles and bones in your arm and hand to move it around your screen. It’s incredibly cumbersome. Your arm works great with big movements, but not so much with small, precise ones.

Now think about the precision and fine motor skills required to draw with a pen. Every tiny muscle in your hand is used to control the movements. I like to think of it this way: a toddler can use a mouse, but there’s no way they could use a tablet. They can’t even write their own name. A tablet will allow you to use those fine motor skills that you developed all those years ago.

How Do You Use a Tablet?

You may have seen tablets being used in Photoshop tutorials and wondered how they’re used. You don’t need to be a professional retoucher or illustrator to benefit from using a tablet. Even if you do all your post-processing in Lightroom, you will likely still find that a tablet will make the process much more precise and enjoyable.

The main benefits of editing with a tablet are speed and precision. As I mentioned earlier, most tablets will have some extra controls on the stylus and on the tablet itself. These controls can be customized to do pretty much anything.

This means that you can replace your most commonly used keystrokes with a single button. The touch ring can be set to adjust things like brush size and hardness, or scroll and zoom. These controls can speed up your post-processing dramatically.

Where a graphics tablet really shines is when you want to apply local adjustments to your photos. Whether you’re making selections, drawing, painting, erasing, or dodging and burning, you’ll find that it’s far easier with a stylus than a mouse. It feels more natural and you’ll make a lot fewer mistakes.

If you don’t currently make a lot of local adjustments to your photos, I highly recommend taking some time to learn how. Learning basic dodging and burning is one of the best things you can do to take your post-processing skills to the next level. Do it with a tablet and you’ll be amazed what a difference it makes to your workflow.

There are many great resources available online for free that will teach you the basics of dodging and burning in both Lightroom and Photoshop. Likewise with setting up and using a tablet. There is a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll never want to edit with a mouse again.

Choosing a Tablet

As I’ve mentioned, tablets range massively in price, size, and features. What you need will depend on a few factors like your budget, how much space you have on your desk, and how you like to work.

You can spend anywhere from $ 25 to $ 2000, so there is something that will suit your needs. You should be able to find a decent tablet under $ 100 that does the job.

Choosing the right size can be tricky. On one hand, the larger your tablet, the easier it is to use. You won’t find yourself having to move around the screen as much with a larger tablet. On the other hand, it will take up more space on your desk or in your bag. I personally like using a tablet that’s smaller than my laptop, that way they both fit nicely in my bag when I’m on the road.

In terms of features, you don’t need a lot of the more advanced features. My older Wacom Intuos doesn’t feature pressure sensitivity, and I don’t miss it. I would recommend using a tablet with at least a few control buttons, as they can speed up your workflow quite a bit.

Don’t stress about getting an expensive, high-end tablet, though. You’ll likely find that a basic model or a cheaper brand will suit your needs just fine. If you have an iPad lying around, there are apps available that allow you to connect it to your computer and use it as a tablet.

Beg, Borrow or Steal

Well, maybe not steal, but ask around and see if someone you know has a tablet you could borrow or rent to try for a week. If you can find one to test out, give it a chance. As I’ve said, it takes a while to get used to it, so don’t give up too soon.

I’m sure that once you get your head around it you’ll be wanting one of your very own, and you’ll never look back.

Instagram leak claims post re-sharing feature is in testing

A new report from The Verge claims Instagram is currently testing a feature that allows users to re-share posts to their own account feeds. Such a feature, assuming it were to launch publicly, would allow Instagram users to share other users’ content, each re-shared post reportedly showing the original poster, as well as each user that subsequently shared it.

The Verge cites screenshots of the alleged test and “an interview with a source,” in its report, however Instagram told the publication that it is not developing or testing a re-sharing feature.

A re-sharing tool, if one launches, may be limited to businesses

Nonetheless, the report claims that Instagram is calling the feature “seamless sharing” internally, developing it as a way for users to present photos and videos from other users in their own feeds. This would be similar to the Stories sharing feature Instagram launched earlier this year. Each post can reportedly be shared at least two times, the reports states.

The feature pictured within the leaked screenshots is described as “extremely rough,” indicating that development is still in its early stages. As with any test, it’s possible no such feature will be launched publicly to users. The report also points out that a re-sharing tool, if one launches, may be limited to businesses as a way for users to share merchandise posts with their followers.

Lowepro updates ProTactic system with modular exterior attachments

Camera bag manufacturer Lowepro has introduced mark II backpacks for its ProTactic AW range with models that are said to feature an improved handling experience as well as a collection of accessories that can be attached to the outside. The ProTactic BP 350 AW II and BP 450 AW II both have redesigned entry points to make access easier, as well as a new more adaptive interior that can be customized to fit the kit you need to carry.

The two bags use the same FormShell composite ‘armored’ outer to protect their contents as the previous versions did, as well as a removable belt. Now though the belt can be used to attach accessories from the range such as the lens pouch, water bottle holder or phone pouch.

Lowepro says that both backpacks can hold one or two DSLRs with one lens attached, up to eight lenses or flash units, a small drone and a gimbal. The difference in size of the bags means the lens attached the DSLR in the ProTactic BP 350 AW II could be a 24-70mm F2.8 size, while the BP 450 AW II has room to that lens to be a 70-200mm F2.8. The smaller bag holds a 13in laptop in its CradleFit suspended pouch, while the larger can manage a 15in model.

Both bags are available now, with the BP 350AW II costing $ 219.95/£209.95 and the BP 450 AW II costing $ 269.95/£259.95. The accessory pouches will be available in early October. See the Lowepro website for more information.
