The serenely beautiful Deeana May was a pleasure to shoot. She lives in California but I was lucky enough to catch up with her on her trip to Utah. I can’t thank her, and her husband, enough for taking time out of a busy trip for a shoot!

Land’s End Sunset
There is no canvas more beautiful than that of the ocean at sunset or sunrise. To the untrained eye it may all seem to be the same, but upon closer examination no one view is ever the same. I consider myself lucky in that every evening, barring the presence of fog, I’m treated to a view of a new sunset.

While the view from home is nice, it’s never as nice as the cliffside view from Lands End here in San Francisco. In this photo a bank of fog burned off in the waning minutes of light. The remaining hints of fog turned purple framing golden lit surf swirling around coastal rock formations. Definitely a view worth waiting for before hiking back to my car in the dark.

Overexposed?
You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again, photography ‘know it alls’ telling you your photo would be great, if it wasn’t overexposed.
Well… congratulations Ansel Adams the Third, it is overexposed.
Have you ever sat in the ocean, waiting for that next great wave with the blazing sun glimmering atop the cresting foam, shooting pincers of blinding light into your eyes as you busily scan the natural beauty of the beach; all while bright bikinis are begging to distract you from your quest?
At that moment do you ever think to yourself… wow, this scene is perfect… too bad the sun is obliterating nearly all the highlight detail in this brilliantly white sand and crashing waves.
No, you don’t.
Real life isn’t exposed properly half the time, our irises automatically adjust to compensate but their range is limited. While you’re floating there, squinting out across the ocean with tightly pinched eye-lids you are fully aware of the limitations inherent in a human eye.
Any claim that a great photograph can’t enjoy the same freedom of tonal range is absurd. Blinding highlights and all.
Sometimes, like a tropical beach, a photo simply demands to live it’s life overexposed. This was one of those times.

Just Posted: Our review of the Olympus XZ-1. The company’s latest enthusiast compact represents its return to the top end of the compact camera market. The impressive set of features builds around a 28-122mm equiv. F1.8-2.5 lens and includes a 3.0″ VGA-equivalent OLED screen, high-sensitivity 10MP CCD sensor and dual control dials. The XZ-1 enters a competitive segment of the market but its specifications suggest it can hold its own. Does use in the real-world support that impression?
