Celine is amazing and gorgeous.  Two qualities I find highly inspirational.  Combined with the softness of a setting sun this shoot was destined to be… this.

My first shoot with Paige, I asked her if she’d be up for trying out a different kind of test shoot.  Different for me that is, maybe not for you.  Hard to say.

Instead of spending the night shooting we sat down somewhere.

We talked and I got to know Paige.  The small things.

Every once in awhile I stole a genuine expression during a genuine moment. A glimpse, a detail.  These are the things a brain like mine sees… when the rest of me is sitting still.

I like to think that part of the genuineness might be captured, and possibly even conveyed. To you, the viewer.

That is my artist statement, of sorts.

I hope you find it as fascinating of a process as I found Paige as a person.  Thanks much for your sla.  Short for slang.  You wouldn’t get it, unless you know her, which I guess is kind of the point?

A journey in documenting a person rather than a face.  That is my new inspiration.  I’ve finally found the words.  More images like this to come.

    Much more.

  • Ricoh GXR and GPS-equipped Panasonics get firmware updates

Ricoh and Panasonic have announced firmware updates for their cameras. Ricoh has released firmware v1.37 for its GXR module, while Panasonic promises improved GPS accuracy for several of its recent cameras. Installing firmware version 1.2 should increase the positioning accuracy of the DMC-ZS10/TZ20, TZ22 and FT3/TS3. Meanwhile, v1.37 for the GXR modules corrects a minor error with focus mode reporting, and a glitch in manual mode for the S10 module.

  • Early Morning Paddling on the Horsetooth Reservoir

The Horsetooth Reservoir west of Fort Collins is busy during summer, but a paddler can still find some relatively quiet time early morning.

Below are three pictures from my morning paddling with Sea Wind canoe (7/30/2011) shot with Pentax Optio W30 camera. I launched in the Sunrise Area and paddled across the lake to visit the Quarry and Orchard coves (~6 miles in 1.5 hour). The reservoir has a very high water level and all shores with tree and bushes in water look wonderful providing some unusual opportunities to explore by kayak or canoe.

I am using 5 access and lunching spots on the Horsetooth:
    1. South Bay – boat ramp
    2. Inlet Bay – boat ramp
    3. Satanka Bay – boat ramp
    4. Sunrise Area from the Centennial Road.
    5. North Eltuck Cove from the Lory State Park (trail access up to 0.25 mile at a low water)

I am avoiding boat ramps during power boat season. Off season, I am often using one of the South Bay boat ramps. It’s possible to park on a beach close to water there. Access point 1-4 require Larimer County Parks pass for your car. You also need a paddling pass. These are quite expensive. I paddle on the Horsetooth only when I buy annual passes. Well, sometimes, especially of season I visit the Horsetooth from the Lory State Park.

  • An Interview with Arnold Newman

If you make environmental portraits, you can trace your photographic lineage to this man. Arnold Newman is widely recognized as the father of the genre. In fact, a young Greg Heisler famously camped out on Newman’s doorstep until he agreed to take him on as an assistant.

It’s not every day that you get to spend half an hour listening to the photographic equivalent of an Old Master. He’s seen here circa 1981 as interviewed by Barbaralee Diamonstein, with much wisdom to be had.

(Many thanks to Michael for the tip.)

  • Fire | Water | Earth

Heather was over.  We shot three quick concepts for no particular rhyme or reason.  The three element theme was a total coincidence.

Fire and water are obvious, leave a comment about why I think the third image might symbolize earth.
