Obviously a tripod or other stabilizing device makes taking digital photographs at nighttime much easier. With a stabile digital camera you can take longer exposures that make up for the reduced lighting, and these photos should not suffer from the dreaded “camera shake”. The built-in or a shoe mount flash can also help in some situations.
However, there are times where your subject is too far away and too large to be affected by flash. Perhaps you are shooting panoramic photos on top of a skyscraper, and your flash unit is simply not going to illuminate buildings miles away. I went along to the Birmingham City University School of Art Bournville show today, I was lucky to have one of the students guide me around the work which is very enlightening. Once you know what the contextual thought process is behind a piece it certainly aides the enjoyment of the visit to the show. Woven, a free app for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire and Nook allows you to browse all of your photos from services such as Flickr, Facebook, Picasa and Smugmug in a single place. Once you’ve logged into each of the services, through the app, it downloads thumbnail versions to your mobile device, allowing you to scan through all your pictures. The app maintains the folder or grouping structures from each service, so you can easily find images and work out where you uploaded them to, even when you’re offline.
The 2013 Sony World Photography Awards are now open for entries, and include categories for 3D and filmmakers. The competition has categories for both amateur and professional photographers and prizes that include both cash and Sony photographic equipment. Submissions must be received before January 4th 2013, with the professional category closing on January 9th. The student competition provides the chance to win 40,000 worth of Sony equipment for the winner’s university.

Sarah Deanna and I got together last week and sat on the rooftop of her Soho loft to discuss her career. She explains what helped her in the beginning when she started out and was testing with new photographers, giving some great advice to those of you starting out in the industry and working with agency models.
I remember the first time I met Sarah Deanna. She came to a casting I held for a NYC handbag client about 4 years ago. I loved her comp card and had wanted to work with her for a long time before I met her. What struck me the most about her was not only was she really beautiful, she was a lovely person. Warm and compassionate, she really appeared to be beyond the outer beauty notion of gorgeous…..she was a awesome girl all around. We’ve worked together on a number of projects since our first meeting and there’s a great chemistry between us. She takes direction well, can move like a champ and she’s as professional as a model can be. The camera loves her, no doubt! She’s done editorials for Italian Vogue, German Vogue, French, L’Official, Amica and Elle. She’s walked runway shows for Dolce Gabbana, D & G, Oscar, Versace, Armani, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein. And her partial client list includes Stella McCartney, Neiman Marcus and Versace! She’s definitely risen to the TOP of her field!!
It was fun to sit with someone in our industry and talk about how she was discovered and how she has made it to the top! And how she wrote a book while doing it! The thing I love most about Sarah Deanna is that she gives back to the industry, helping other models learn how to achieve the weight necessary in the modeling industry in a healthy manner.
