Sigma has announced a pair of new telezoom lenses. Both described as the ‘150-600mm F/5-6.3 DG OS HSM’ one carries Sigma’s ‘Contemporary’ branding and one is positioned in its ‘Sport’ lineup. The sports version is dust and splash-proof, while both lenses boast new versions of Sigma’s optical image stabilization system. Under the hood though, their construction is significantly different. Canon announces Cine-Servo 17-120mm and HJ18ex7.6B HD zooms
Canon has announced its new Cine-Servo 17-120mm T2.95 zoom lens for shoulder-mounted application or as a traditional cinema lens. It has an ENG-style Digital Drive handgrip with zoom rocker switch and will be available in either PL- or EF-mount. Canon has also launched the HJ18ex7.6B portable HD zoom lens for broadcast news and documentary situations. Learn more

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS35 and ZS40 travel zooms unveiled
CES 2014: Panasonic has introduced the Lumix DMC-ZS40 travel zoom, also known as DMC-TZ60 in some markets. Equipped with Wi-Fi and NFC, it provides a 30x zoom range (24-720mm equiv), an 18.1MP sensor, and a built-in electronic viewfinder. Its enthusiast-leaning feature set includes a control ring around the lens, Raw shooting, and focus peaking. Also introduced is a lower-cost model, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS35 (TZ55), with Wi-Fi connectivity (though no NFC). The ZS35 covers a 28-560mm equivalent 20x zoom range, uses a 16MP sensor, and lacks a viewfinder.

Fujifilm adds five lenses to X system roadmap, including fast zooms
CES 2014: Fujifilm has updated its X-system roadmap for 2014, adding five lenses to its list of upcoming releases. First up is an extended-range zoom, the XF 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 R OIS (28-200mm equivalent). Following this will be two fast zooms, the XF 16-55mm F2.8 R OIS standard zoom, and XF 50-140 F2.8 R OIS (24-83mm and 75-210mm equivalent respectively). All three feature aperture rings and optical stabilisation. They’ll be followed by a ‘high speed wide angle lens’ and ‘super telephoto zoom lens’ in late 2014 / early 2015.

Report zooms in on giant camera resolution test charts throughout the US
Dozens of two-dimentional aerial photo calibration targets are scattered all across the United States, according to a report by the Center for Land Use Interpretation. Constructed mostly during the 1950s and 1960s, these large outdoor charts were used as ‘a platform to test, calibrate, and focus aerial cameras traveling at different speeds and altitudes.’ The report points out that although some of these ‘charts’ are still used for some optical camera testing and calibration, they are primarily relics of the past.
