  • Yosemite Nature Notes – 14 – Horsetail Fall

Horsetail Fall is a small, ephemeral waterfall that flows over the eastern edge of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. For two weeks in February, the setting sun striking the waterfall creates a deep orange glow that resembles Yosemite’s historic “Firefall.”

Half Dome Sunrise, Yosemite National Park

To gaze upon a sunrise is a treasured moment, you only get so many opportunities to see them. Keeping that in mind it always pays to get up early.

John Muir also had an eloquent quote, “God never made an ugly landscape. All that the sun shines on is beautiful, so long as it is wild.”  I couldn’t agree more, but it’s easy to see how he came to that conclusion witnessing so many sunrises in Yosemite. Personally there are few things as glorious as seeing sunrise over Half Dome.

  • Yosemite Moonset

One aspect of night photography that I particularly enjoy is the slow calm of the stars and moon passing over. For some this might seem as exciting as watching paint dry, but when you’re under billions and billions of stars that slow calm quickly gives way to pure awe. This still is from a time-lapse, so at some point soon I’ll share what this scene looked like as it unfolded in a faster timeframe than the 3-4 hours it took to watch in realtime.

  • Glacier Point Summer Storm, Yosemite

I recently had the opportunity to revisit the amazing lookout from Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park. Summer storm clouds made for an interesting sunset shoot. As is characteristic of Yosemite the beautiful and ever transforming light made for quite a light show. With light like this it is no wonder photographers flock to Yosemite. As you’ll see from the photo details below I wasn’t up to my normal landscape photo outing. I’ve been experimenting with some new gear that I’m looking forward to talking about in the near future. More on that later.

  • Rediscovering Yosemite Through Fresh Eyes

It was nice to unplug for a bit this weekend in Yosemite National Park. I took my first father/son trip with my 22 month old son. Photography wasn’t the priority this trip so it was nice to just enjoy and share the scenery as seen through the eyes of my son. While I wasn’t setting up for moonbows, sunset or sunrise photos with my dSLR I still had my iPhone with me just in case. In both of the photos below I was hiking around with my son sitting on my shoulders and it would seem the sights and sounds we took in made an impact.

Classic Half Dome, Yosemite National Park

Now when I ask him to say “Half Dome” he points out the window and says “hav dum”. I can’t wait to get back out with him to see what else he picks up. It was a real treat to see a place like Yosemite with fresh eyes and witness my son’s raw curiosity as we explored the valley on our day hikes.

  • Hanging Rock by Moonlight – Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park

There are few things that pique the curiosity of night sky watchers more than the moon. Even my son at 10 months old started to point out the moon. If you see it enough it seems anything but special, but the moon is amazing. It’s an amazing sight to witness and an amazing subject to photograph. One thing that amazes photographers the most is that the full moon gives off so much light.

Overhanging Rock by Moonlight – Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park

The moon is one gigantic reflector in the sky. The moon reflects ~1/7th of the sun’s light back to Earth, so with the right exposure (~7x’s longer than normal) you can get an image that looks nearly indistinguishable from a daytime photo. If you’re walking at night under a full moon you might not think that much light is there to see, but on the contrary once your eyes adapt it can look incredibly bright. The moon is pretty cool all around so be sure to take the time to appreciate it on your next night walk or night photo shoot. The experience will more than likely awaken a primal curiosity no different in experience than our caveman relatives might have felt.

    Photo Details:
    Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM at 20mm, f/4, 6 seconds, ISO 3200

  • Milky Way Above Yosemite National Park

One Day in Yosemite – Milky Way Above Half Dome, Yosemite

Earlier this week I had the great fortune of being part of “One Day in Yosemite”. The goal, have 25+ photographers and videographers document everything and anything happening in Yosemite: morning hang gliders, rock climbers, hikers on well known landmarks, amazing sights, wildlife encounters, behind the scenes at hotels, campground activities, ranger programs, interviews of employees & visitors and more. Shooting was from midnight to midnight to capture a full 24 hours of everything Yosemite. I’m looking forward to seeing a sample of what was captured in an up coming episode of the Nature Notes video series released by the National Park Service and the Yosemite Conservancy. In the future the producer, the very talented Steve Bumgardner (@yosemitesteve), is working to release a longer documentary comprised of the days shoot. Based on the footage I saw from the many talented photographers/videographers taking part the end result should be amazing. Stay tuned!

  • Snow Covered Merced River – Yosemite National Park

Tough to believe that Summer has almost passed here in California. I’ve heard many photographers as of late mentioning they’re eagerly awaiting Fall to see the leaves turn color. I myself am quite content with Summer for now. For those suffering from extreme summer temperatures I hope this cool view of a snow covered Merced river in Yosemite National Park  acts as mental air conditioning. Make the most of the weekend as it’s one of the few remaining this Summer.

  • Fern Leaves, Yosemite National Park

Yosemite provides an endless well of inspiration, even more so if you stop looking up. Tough to do, but always enlightening when it happens. On a casual walk amidst burnt trees on the valley floor the wind was kind enough to introduce me to some beautiful ferns. The next time you’re walking in your favorite location I recommend listening to the wind as you never know what it’ll introduce you to.
