Snowflake-Shaped Ski Dome Over River is World’s Largest

15 Nov

[ By Steph in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

A six-armed, snowflake-shaped ski dome stretching across the river Gudenåen in Denmark would be the world’s largest if constructed, besting the current record holder, Ski Dubai, by at least 22,500 square meters. The dome consists of three enclosed, arching ramps that cross each other in the center, offering six indoor and two outdoor slopes.

The tallest arch rises 360 feet from the surface of the river at its apex. Rather than being completely enclosed, like most other indoor ski domes, Skidome Denmark, designed by CEBRA for the ski travel agency Danski,  would have a perforated facade that gives skiers a view of the river and surrounding countryside.

In addition to skiing, the dome would have facilities for skateboarding and BMXing, and a landscaped park on the roof. Danski representative Simon Oscar Anderson told Dezeen that the conspicuous river location was chosen to connect the different neighborhoods in the town of Randers, “solving a lot of infrastructural problems for the city.”

“Skidome Denmark brings, quite literally, a piece of the Alps to Denmark: The slopes are developed in association with Alpe d’Huez ski resort in France, and the gradients are copied directly from the most popular pistes,” says CEBRA. “The arches contain a total of six slopes with real snow and varying degrees of difficulty, so that skiers of all ages will be able to find challenges according to skills and experience.”

“Every piste has its own chair lift and the three arches are conjoint by an elevator for transporting skiers between the different levels. In order to ensure variation in the landscape over time, it is possible to transform the pistes’ topography, providing visitors with a different experience each time they visit the ski dome.”

Slim Living: World’s Thinnest House is Just Four Feet Wide

07 Nov

[ By Steph in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

A four-foot-wide space between two buildings in Warsaw, Poland has become the world’s thinnest house. Architect Jakub Szczesny built a series of vertical spaces into the void including a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and lounge area.

Keret House will function as a place for artist residencies lasting from five to seven days. Its size prevents it from being considered a full-time residence. Szczesny, who has been working on the narrow home for three years, was inspired by the work of Israeli writer Etgar Keret, who writes extremely short stories.

You might imagine that such a thin house, crammed between two large buildings, would feel dark and claustrophobic inside. But a transparent roof, open stairways and a wall of windows enable lots of sunlight to stream inside. The house is set about ten feet above the ground, is 33 feet in depth and about 30 feet tall.

Keret House may hold the unofficial record as the slimmest house in the world, but it’s hardly alone in its narrow quirkiness. Other thin homes include a 9-foot-wide, three-story residence in Brazil, the Wedge House in Scotland and a whole series of ultra-narrow buildings in Japan.

Canon develops world’s first 120 megapixel APS-H CMOS sensor

27 Aug

Canon has announced it has developed a 120 megapixel 29.2 x 20.2mm APS-H CMOS sensor – the same size used in its EOS-1D series of professional DSLRs. The sensor, for which Canon has announced no production plans, has a pixel count nearly 7.5 times larger than the company’s highest pixel count commercially available sensor. It offers full HD recording (using 1/60th of its surface area) and can deliver 9.5fps continuous shooting. This follows a 50 million pixel sensor of similar format the company developed in 2007.

YT3D Stereoscopic 3D video (mostly photos) of The World’s Largest Toy Museum in Branson, Missouri. This has got to be one of the coolest places on earth! It is a little difficult to get good 3D photos because of the reflections from the glass cases, but I did my best. I captured Lego, Toy Story, Betty Boop, PEZ, Star Trek, Star Wars, Smurfs and even the Batmobile. If you ever find yourself in Branson, Missouri you have to check this place out!
