Silhouettes are a wonderful way to convey drama, mystery, emotion and mood to the viewers of your photos and often stand out in an album because of the combination of their simplicity but also the story that they convey. I love them because they don’t give the viewer of a clear picture of everything but leave part of the image up to their imagination to wonder about.

That’s an excerpt from a post I wrote quite some time ago, but remains one of our more popular posts on how to photograph silhouettes. Your challenge this week is to take a photograph of a silhouette and see if you can create a story that evokes imagination in the viewer. Here’s some tips to get you started:

Weekly Challenge – Rainbows and Prisms

Your photographic challenge this week is to take and share a photo incorporating a rainbow or prism effect.

Now, we don’t expect to send you all out chasing rainbows without any help! Whilst they can be elusive, this post will give you some tips on how to find and photograph them.

You can interpret this theme in different ways, so long as there is a sense of motion. The photo above features in the following article with tips on how to use wind in your portrait shots.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Fall Colors

Fall is upon us in the northern parts of the world. So it’s time to take advantage of it and get out there to capture some of that color for the weekly photography challenge.

Even if you live in the southern hemisphere, challenge yourself to find some similar colors (yellow, orange and red) to create some fall-like images.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Out of the Blue

Here is another easy one for you.

Get out there and find some blue things to photograph this week for the photography challenge!

You can look for blue things, shoot during Blue Hour, or use some split-toning on a black and white image to make your something blue for this challenge.

In post-processing, removed most of the color tones in the image except for blues, and a little bit of green/teal. 

Oil and water and a bit of color make for a fun afternoon photography project.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Seeing Red

Okay, this should be an easy one for you. All you need to do to participate in this week’s photography challenge is come up with something red!

That could mean finding a red subject, making your own (oil and water and dye) or using a selective color technique to remove all the other tints in the image except for red.

Is it noisy? Yes but not outrageously so (shot with a Canon 5D Mark III). But without the use of the 50mm lens and high ISO, this shot isn’t even possible.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Long Exposures

This week, for your dPS photography challenge, you will need to get out your tripod and remote trigger because you’ll be doing some long exposure photography.

Shooting star trails is the ultimate long exposure photography.

There are many ways to incorporate a long exposure into your images. Here are a few ideas:

Car light trails – this image is a combination of several frames shot to capture more lights.

Light painting is another idea for long exposures.

Try an intention motion blur, in this case, the lens was zoomed during a long exposure.
