My Week With Heisler, Pt. 2

24 Sep
Editor's Note: Contributor Sara Lando continues her three-part series chronicling her 10-day stint as an assistant/mole with Gregory Heisler in Dubai. This is part two. Part one is here.

By Sara Lando — "Lighting is a lot like cooking. You have a gazillion different instruments and what you use will depend of what you want to eat. Also, you don't learn how to cook by eating at restaurants. You have to cook."

When Heisler was talking about this during his lecture, I thought it was cool and made sense. But it was probably only when we stepped into Cavalli Club that I got to realize how much "having to cook" was going to be put into test.

He was entering the club for the first time himself: for a series of reasons, we weren't able to scout the location beforehand and he only got a glimpse of the place from some cellphone footage. When we stepped into the club, the first word that came through my mind isn't one I'd feel comfortable reporting.

The place was pitch black.

Get 6 Days of Online Photography Training For Free This Week at Photo Week

16 Sep

photoweek_logo1.pngHere at dPS we are all about helping people of all experience levels to improve their photography.

This week we’re excited to see our friends at CreativeLIVE putting on a free online event that will help you do just that – it is called Photo Week and we think you’ll really love what is on offer.

Starting today and over the next 6 days CreativeLIVE have 50 amazing photographers coming into their studios to run full days of live workshop training on many many aspects of photography.

They’ve arranged the training into 3 tracks:

  • Wedding and Family – Explore the art — and business — of capturing life’s most important moments.
  • Portrait and Commercial – Learn how to delight commercial and editorial clients with these 20 workshops.
  • Create what you love – This series of 19 workshops covers everything you need to know about exploring your passion — whether it’s exploring toy cameras or getting back to the basics

The quality of trainers and training will be amazing – I hardly know where to begin with the lineup they’ve got. Here’s a quick screen shot of the instructors!

photo-week.png

The best thing about Photo Week is it is all shown on the CreativeLIVE site for free throughout the week.

You can pay to get recordings if you can’t make all of the sessions you want to see or would like to play them back over and over again – but if there’s just a few sessions you want you can tune in when they are on and grab them completely for free.

See the full 6 day schedule and RSVP for Photoweek here.

My Week With Heisler, Pt. 1

09 Sep

Let's say for a moment that you found yourself embedded as an assistant with arguably the world's best living photographic portraitist. And let's also say that, beyond your primary duties as an assistant your secondary goal was to be observant as possible and report back on what you learned.

That's exactly what happened to Italian photographer (and occasional Strobist contributor) Sara Lando, who as you can see above was not at all excited about her assignment at Gulf Photo Plus earlier this year. She looks almost bored, dontcha think?

This post marks the first of a three-part series on what she learned from her experience. Today, the intangibles: the stuff you'd never consider because you are too busy worrying about a gridded beauty dish or something…

5 Milestones for dPS This Week!

01 Aug

This week has been an exciting week around dPS headquarters as we’ve celebrated a number of milestones – all of which are thanks to you our amazing community of readers!

Let me share a few of them with you!

1. 750,000 Newsletter Subscribers!

NewImage On Monday we noticed that our newsletter passed the magical 750,000 subscriber mark! Back in 2006 when I started the dPS newsletter so that a family member could get our latest tutorials (because he didn’t know how to subscribe to our RSS feed or wasn’t on Twitter) I had no idea how important our newsletter would be to three quarters of a million people!

Our weekly newsletter is the #1 way that people get updated on our latest free tutorials and if I ever happen to be late in sending one – boy do we hear about it from our subscribers – it is much anticipated each week!

If you’re not a subscriber yet – just add your email address below and we’ll send it out to you each Thursday!

We can’t wait to hit the million subscriber mark – we’ll have to think of a way to celebrate that one!

2. 18,000 Pinterest Followers!

NewImageOn Tuesday we our Pinterest account had it’s 18,000th follower. While there are plenty of bigger accounts around we’re really proud of what we’ve built on Pinterest.

Jade – our Pinterest Guru – has set up 170 different ‘boards’ – each one dedicated to a different category of photography and each day she hunts for and shares some great photographic content from around the web.

So far she’s shared over 7000 great tutorials! Just be warned – if you follow us on Pinterest you may never get any work done again – it’s an amazing resource!

3. 170,000 Facebook Followers

NewImageOn Wednesday we celebrated our 170,000th Facebook follower!

Our Facebook page is a great place to get the latest updates from our blog as well as connect with other readers.

PS: you can also follow us on Twitter. We’re approaching the 100,000 milestone there!

4. New dPS Redesign Preview

On Thursday we got a preview of the new dPS redesign that our design and development team have been working on. We’re still a few weeks away from launching it fully but we are REALLY excited by how it is shaping up.

The new design will be great for viewing on your mobile phone (a much requested feature, has an improved comments section, some new gallery features and is a lot more colourful to look at. We think you’ll like it.

We can’t show the full thing but here’s just a teasing glimpse of what’s to come! It’s taken from our new front page.

Dps

5. More Great Reviews of our Landscapes eBook

Landscapes cover 1It’s been 9 days since we launched Living Landscapes and we’ve been overwhelmed by the amazing feedback we’ve been getting about it.

Here’s another comment left on the blog yesterday from one of our readers – Robin Grant:

I bought this eBook last week.

It was the first eBook I’ve ever bought and I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed reading it on my iPad. Todds photos are amazing (I am seriously thinking about booking a trip to New Zealand) and he writes really clearly.

I’ve already taken my camera out of town to experiment with some shots and can see my photos are improving already. Thanks for writing this dPS.

Save 33% on Living Landscapes and go into the draw to win a great $ 1500 photographic prize (lenses and bag) when you pick up a copy of Living Landscapes today.

Thanks to our Readers

None of the above would have been possible without our amazing readership. Thanks so much for being a part of what we do and for sharing us with your friends.

Thanks!

On Bathroom Detail All Week

31 May

We're remodeling two bathrooms, and as part of a barter deal with the contractor I am doing a series of before and after photos. I'll post more about that later, but I just wanted to drop something in quickly about the lighting on the detail shots I was doing today.

It's a quick-and-dirty, two-light setup and the effect is almost like a charcoal drawing—sort of 2-D and 3-D at the same time. And try as I might, it's pretty hard to mess this up.

Sandra draws an abstract thing: Week 2 of 52

06 Feb

The song is an a capella cover of Radiohead’s “Dollars and Cents” by Dorien who can be found soundcloud.com This is week two of my year-long project and i had a few problems doing it. (Some poor lighting and poor focus and poor white balance in random parts of this video). Also, my computer stopped recognizing my camera so i couldn’t take photos, but in the end all i had to do was restart the computer.. a few times. The shape of this drawing turned out to be a weird sort-of S-letter-like thing..And a bit more random than the first one. This is a bit more than 8 hours of drawing
Video Rating: 4 / 5
