Phase One photographer Tim Kemple puts XF 100MP back to use in new video

14 Jan

Phase One has published a new video featuring the XF 100MP back in use. Phase One photographer Tim Kemple put the new Sony co-developed 100MP CMOS sensor through its paces outside of the studio, soaring to great heights above a waterfall and on dusty trails in the desert of Moab, Utah.

The Phase One XF 100MP camera system offers 16-bit color output and a claimed 15 stops of dynamic range, presumably at the base (native) ISO setting of 50. In a handful of samples published alongside the video, Kemple pushes the camera to ISO 3200 for some action shots. And as a heads up, if the thought of $ 49,000 worth of gear dangling above a waterfall makes you queasy, the video above probably isn’t for you.

How to Create a Lightsaber in Photoshop Video Tutorial

10 Jan

With all the recent hype and talk about the newest installation in the Star Wars movie empire (The Force Awakens), I thought this might be a fun project to do.

If you’ve followed along with the saga you know about lightsabers, the weapon of choice for the Jedi knights. Even if you aren’t a fan, you’ve likely heard of it, or had your kids or grandchildren request a toy version for themselves. So how fun would it be to add one to your photos.

Here are two videos that take slightly different approaches to creating a lightsaber in Photoshop. You can learn some new techniques and see which method you prefer.

This one by Adam from Photoshop Tutorials:

And another with Andrew from Creative Edge Studios:

If you give this a try, please share your images in the comments below. See how creative you can be, and how realistic you can make your lightsaber look. Have fun!

07 Jan

Today at CES Nikon announced two new DSLR cameras: the pro-oriented D5 and the enthusiast-oriented D500, which is possibly the longest-awaited successor to any camera we can remember, replacing the D300S after almost six years.

Just after the announcement we slipped away from the CES crowds with Nikon’s DSLR product manager, Mark Soares, to get his take on the new bodies, a rundown of some major features, and insight into why Nikon chose to break the number sequence by skipping ‘400’ and calling the new DX flagship the D500 instead.

Video: a look at the Sony Cyber-shot RX1R II

16 Dec

Like much of the DPReview staff, editor Barney Britton is a self-proclaimed super-fan of the 35mm focal length. The Sony Cyber-shot RX1R II has the same permanently affixed 35mm F2 lens as its predecessor, but it is backed up by almost completely new internals, including the same 42MP full-frame sensor and autofocus system as the Sony a7R II. Barney’s put the RX1R II through its paces in a wide variety of shooting scenarios, and shares his thoughts about what’s new, what isn’t, and more importantly, whether or not the Mark II version is worth the upgrade. Panasonic to restart development of image sensors to fast-track 8K video

08 Dec

According to a report from the Nikkei Asian Review, Panasonic has decided to resume image sensor development in order to speed up the drive for 8K video. The company suspended its development program a few years ago, the report says, but now Panasonic is preparing to invest ¥10bn/$ 80.8m to get its R&D back up to speed.

The renewed effort is said to be aimed at producing sensors for 8K video output for its consumer and broadcast cameras, with production models expected on the market by 2018.

Recently, Panasonic has used its 4K video functions for a range of applications in addition to video, such as 4K Photo, where a still is extracted from a 30fps burst, and the Post Focus feature that allows users to change what is in focus after the picture has been taken. Presently, the stills extracted from clips made using these modes are only 8MP, but if that clip were recorded at 8K video (around 7680 x 4320) the stills would be in the region of 33MP, depending on the image proportions chosen. This is very much in line with Panasonic’s previous promise that we will be extracting 33MP still images from its cameras by the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

The report says that the introduction of 8K video in cameras will eliminate the boundary between videos and stills. It will certainly change the way images are created in quite a dramatic way.
