Mathematician turns Juno images into stunning Jupiter flyby video

Since NASA’s Juno probe entered Jupiter’s orbit a year ago, it’s been sending back high-resolution images of the solar system’s biggest planet.

When NASA released the latest batch of images, last month, German mathematician Gerald Eichstaedt got to work, turning them into into a video. Using software that he wrote, Eichstaedt used Juno’s trajectory data to determine the probe’s exact position when it captured an image, and then placed that image on a spherical model of the planet. The resulting video combines 36 images from the probe to simulate a Jovian flyby.

London-based filmmaker Seán Doran saw the video when Eichstaedt uploaded it to unmannedspaceflight.com and spent another 12 hours smoothing the thousands of frames, before adding a soundtrack.

It’s almost like being there. Almost…

Video: Nikon D7500 first look

Nikon’s brand new midrange D7500 just arrived in our office. Announced back in April, the camera uses the same image sensor, metering sensor and processor as the APS-C flagship Nikon D500. It also gains 4K video capture and features a lighter design, with improved weather sealing and a deeper grip. Other improvements come in the form of a tilting touch LCD. SkyPixel and DJI now accepting entries to 2017 Aerial Video Contest

DJI and SkyPixel have opened up their latest competition for entries. The 2017 SkyPixel Video Contest accepts video clips from 30 seconds up to 5 minutes in length. Videos can be created by any aerial platform, so if you don’t own a DJI drone, fear not – you’re still in the running. Prize packages include DJI drones, Nikon DSLRs and some slick-looking (?) Oakley sunglasses.

Entries must be submitted to one of three categories: City, Nature and Sports. The deadline for submissions in August 2nd, 2017. Find out more at the contest website.

Video: a grayscale method for matching colors in Photoshop

Adobe Senior Creative Director Russell Brown recently posted this neat demo showing a technique for matching colors in Photoshop without touching a hue or saturation slider. His method uses adjustments in grayscale to individual color channels, comparing a swatch of the color he’s attempting to change directly to the color he’s trying to match. See how he does it in the video above.

Video: Kai Wong’s first impressions of the new DJI Spark drone

DJI’s latest drone is here and it is tiny, stabilized and reasonably priced. A floating selfie stick of sorts, the DJI Spark is likely to appeal to a wide array of casual users and enthusiasts. So is it any good? Kai Wong spent some time testing out a prototype of the Spark prior to its release, and seems impressed with the video quality and stablization. Have a watch for specifics and some insightful commentary, as well as a bit of humor.

Video: Journalist survives ISIS sniper attack, his GoPro does not

In the terrifying video above, Iraqi journalist Ammar Alwaely narrowly escapes a sniper’s bullet, which takes out his chest-mounted GoPro. From the YouTube description:

Journalist Ammar Alwaely, was working in Mosul Iraq, when a sniper’s bullet hit his GoPro camera. The camera, which was a gift from one of his co-workers, almost certainly saved Mr. Alwaely’s life. Ammar received treatment for minor cuts, but was otherwise unharmed.

Ammar and his companions seem to be setting up for a shot and in good spirits right before the bullet rips across the screen. The sniper’s fire clearly catches the group off guard. At about the 0:33 point in the clip, the English-speaking individual filming asks where the bullet came from (caution, strong language).

We’re not sure that the GoPro actually saved his life, but Ammar did live to tell the tale (we wonder if his micro SD card survived as well). The attack took place on May 13th and the video was post on the 17th – at the time of publishing it has been viewed nearly three quarters of a million times.

Video: first person view of a spacewalk, shot by an action cam

There’s literally nothing cooler than outer space. And getting to see a first-person view of a spacewalk, shot by an action camera, is both fascinating and exciting. The above video was taken on March 24th by ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet. It also shows NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough.

The two are shown preparing a dock and making repairs to components at the International Space Station. From the Youtube post:

“The primary task was to prepare the Pressurized Mating Adapter-3 (PMA-3) for installation of the second International Docking Adapter, which will accommodate commercial crew vehicle dockings. The PMA-3 provides the pressurized interface between the station modules and the docking adapter. The pair disconnected cables and electrical connections on PMA-3 to prepare for its robotic move, which took place on Sunday, March 26. PMA-3 was be moved from the port side of the Tranquility module to the space-facing side of the Harmony module, where it will become home for the docking adapter, which will be delivered on a future flight of a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft. The spacewalkers also installed on the starboard zero truss a new computer relay box equipped with advanced software for the adapter.

The two spacewalkers lubricated the latching end effector on the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator “extension” for the Canadarm2 robotic arm, inspected a radiator valve suspected of a small ammonia leak and replaced cameras on the Japanese segment of the outpost. Radiators are used to shed excess heat that builds up through normal space station operation.”
