Adobe joins Nikon in withdrawing from this year’s NAB Show in Las Vegas due to COVID-19

10 Mar

Adobe has announced it’s withdrawing from this year’s NAB Show in Las Vegas due to concerns surrounding COVID-19 (the coronavirus). In the brief statement, embedded below, Adobe says it is disappointed it has to make this decision but says ‘the health and safety of our employees, customers and partners are always our priority.’

This announcement comes just days after both AJA and Nikon confirmed the companies wouldn’t be attending NAB 2020. With respect to this year’s NAB Show, the organizers have a webpage dedicated to information about COVID-19 and how the show will be different this year. NAB is still scheduled to take place April 18-22. We have contacted the organizers of the NAB Show for comment regarding the departure of Adobe, AJA and Nikon. We will update this article accordingly if we receive a response.

Adobe Withdraws from NAB Show 2020

Each year, we look forward to seeing our video community at NAB to talk about the latest trends and our product innovations. Over the past few weeks, we have been closely monitoring and evaluating the situation around COVID-19 and have made the difficult but important decision to cancel our presence at the show this year.

While we are disappointed, the health and safety of our employees, customers and partners are always our priority. We look forward to engaging with our NAB community through a digital experience in the near future.

Adobe and Nikon withdrawing from the NAB Show follow on the heels of the annual CP+2020 show in Japan being canceled at the end of February. The impact of COVID-19 has been felt outside of the realm of tradeshows as well, with the virus affecting the supply chains for camera manufacturers. Nikon has just announced that the release of the Nikon D6 flagship DSLR camera has been delayed from this month until May. Canon has proactively suspended production at three of its plants in Japan.

The COVID-19 coronavirus has already had a large impact on industries around the world, including the photo industry, and companies are working hard to mitigate the risk for their employees. As governments and health agencies around the world work to better understand and contain COVID-19, it is difficult to predict the extent of the impact that the virus will have on the photo industry, but it’s safe to expect today’s announcement from Adobe is not the last of its kind we will hear in the coming weeks and months. The VEGAS Pro video editor is now available by subscription, costs $17 per month

26 Jan

In an attempt to attract new videographers and video editors, Magix is making its VEGAS Pro video editing software available on a subscription basis. The program, which Magix bought from Sony in 2016, costs $ 600 (£500) to buy outright, but the subscription model gets you access from just $ 16.67 (£12.42) per month under the moniker VEGAS Pro 365.

The company is offering the new VEGAS Pro 365 application on a 3-month or 12-month subscription contract, with access to all the features of VEGAS Pro 15 and SOUND FORGE Audio Studio 12—the company’s latest audio editing application. The VEGAS Pro 365 model also comes with access to online educational materials, to help newcomers understand how the program works.

Magix says that the 365 version won’t replace its perpetual license option—imagine the uproar if it were—but is simply a way to make the application more accessible to a wider range of videographers. A 12-month commitment will get you the $ 16.67 per month price quoted above, while a 3-month subscription works out to $ 20 (£15.00) per month.

For more information, read the full press release below or visit the Vegas software website.

Press Release

VEGAS Pro 365 subscription now available: Get started with professional video editing at only $ 16.67/month

January 18th – VEGAS Creative Software adds a first-of-its-kind video and audio production package to the award-winning VEGAS Pro product line. The subscription-based-offering VEGAS Pro 365 is priced from $ 16.67/month.

Focused on the first-time users, this new version offers a complete video and audio editing solution with all the features of VEGAS Pro 15 and SOUND FORGE Audio Studio 12, along with online training courses to learn VEGAS Pro.

The existing versions and 30-day trial version of VEGAS Pro continue to exist.

“With VEGAS Pro 365, we want to make it easier for aspiring video creators and enthusiasts to access professional video and audio production software. With flexible terms and additional services, we seek to fulfil a long-standing demand of our VEGAS Pro fan base” says Gary Rebholz, Product Owner.

For video editors, the new software package includes all the latest features of VEGAS Pro with high-end plug-ins and online training courses to learn to use VEGAS Pro. Users now also have full access to the audio editor SOUND FORGE Audio Studio to add high quality sound to their projects. Video projects can be edited offline within the subscription just like with the perpetual license. Projects also remain fully accessible to users even after expiration and can be easily imported and edited by other versions of VEGAS Pro. All components of the package stay up-to-date with the latest feature and product updates.

After taking over the video editing software VEGAS Pro from Sony Creative Software in 2016, MAGIX has since then released two new versions, VEGAS Pro 14 and 15. The additional offer of VEGAS Pro 365 now makes the product even more accessible. “We will continue to offer and update perpetual licenses of VEGAS Pro. What we want is an additional complete package customized to the needs of first-time users” says Rebholz.

Photographer captures once-in-a-lifetime Las Vegas sunset

11 Jul

Photographer Tony Eckersley’s balcony overlooking the Las Vegas strip from his downtown apartment is usually good for a dramatic sunset or thunderstorm. But even by those standards, the scene he encountered earlier this week was unusually spectacular. As a thunderstorm passed over the city, he was able to capture the sunset to the west with the storm continuing over the east side. Learn more

Viva Las Vegas with Keith Urban at the Cosmopolitan, iPhone Style

04 Sep

This past weekend I shot my first iPhone only concert ever — Keith Urban at The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas with Brett Eldredge and Jerrod Neimann.

I was there with my wife mrsth for our 18th wedding anniversary. We’re both big Keith Urban and country music fans, so when I saw he was playing at the swanky Cosmopolitan (which is absolutely the best place to stay in Vegas these days), I booked us a room there for the weekend and we celebrated 18 years in style.

A great show was made even better thanks to Jessica Northey who put us in touch with Keith’s management (thank you so much Rachel!) who were able to arrange a special meet and greet ahead of the show. There’s nothing like impressing your woman on her special day!

I’ve shot a lot of live music over the years and always with a DSLR, but this time I went sans DSLR and shot only with my iPhone. You can check out what I was able to get with only an iPhone only here. iPhone shooting in low light can be tricky. I felt like I got some good shots though.

At Coachella earlier this year my friend Sam Levin gave me an olloclip. That really came in handy for this show. If you like shooting concert photography with your iPhone, you absolutely *HAVE* to get one of these. It’s basically a telephoto lens for your iPhone and makes a huge difference in terms of getting closer than you could otherwise.

Most shows I see I’m pretty much focused 100% on just shooting the show — so much that I don’t even really have the best time. This show though it was much more laid back without my DSLR and just hanging out as a normal fan with an iPhone. One of these days I would love to shoot Keith Urban with a DSLR, but the Vegas show was perfect just like it was with the iPhone.

And about that show — WOW! if you haven’t seen Keith Urban play live yet you really should. In fact he’s in the Bay Area Saturday night in Mountain View if you want to check him out for yourself. He puts on a really rocking show digging deep into his repertoire with so many of his greatest hits. Keith has a ton of energy and he and his whole band really put on a super fun and kick ass live show — that man can play guitar!

Both Brett Eldredge and Jerrod Niemann are great opening acts. My wife especially enjoyed the fact that in Vegas Brett played a bit of Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon, which was coincidently the first song that we danced to at our wedding 18 years ago.

Keith’s got other dates coming up in Oregon and Washington if you live there. You can check out the remaining dates of his Raise ‘Em Up tour here.

Finding the Time to do Photography Part 1- Business Trip to Las Vegas

23 Apr
The Fire Wave at Valley of Fire State Park. 4 minutes, f/16, ISO 160. EOS 5D Mark III with EF 16-35 f/2.8L II.

The Fire Wave at Valley of Fire State Park.Exposure: ISO 160, 4 minutes, at f/16. EOS 5D Mark III with EF 16-35 f/2.8L II.

About a month ago, a question was posed on the DPS Facebook Page, “What is the number one obstacle to you taking better photos?” While some answered that they were unsure how to set exposure in Manual mode, and others thought their gear might be limiting them, the overwhelming number one answer was TIME.  In this day and age of being always on, always connected, and always on the go, it can be difficult to find time to do photography.  Like many, my day job, which isn’t as a full time photographer, keeps me busy and eats up much of my time. On weekends, I can occasionally make time but often life and family get in the way.

Scenic Drive in Valley of Fire. 1/10, f/16, ISO 100. EOS 5D Mark III with EF 24-70 f/2.8L II.

Scenic Drive in Valley of Fire. 1/10, f/16, ISO 100. EOS 5D Mark III with EF 24-70 f/2.8L II.

So what to do when you need a fix?  There are several things you can do. What I do is to take advantage of my job when I can. I do occasionally travel for work, and when I do, I bring my camera with me.  While I may not have an entire day, often I can find an hour at the end of the day, or I can even go shoot at night.  This was true when I went to Las Vegas recently for a trade show.  I had two days of training seminars, two days of trade show setup and four full days of trade show to work. Was I tired at the end of the day? Yes, but photography is how I relax, so it seemed only natural to eschew the neon glow of the restaurants and casinos and go grab my camera.

First of all, the day I arrived, my flight got in earlier in the afternoon.  I rented a car and headed out to Valley of Fire State Park, about 45 minutes northeast of Las Vegas. I got a mixed afternoon of clouds, which parted for a nice sunset. I then hung around for darkness and got a few night shots just to finish things off.

The next day, the work began, but after my work day ended, I headed out to the strip to shoot some of the neon.  The Vegas strip is an awesome place to shoot no matter what you like to shoot. Cityscapes, architecture, or people, it’s all there and it’s there every night. You need only spend an hour and you’ll get more than your fill. The beauty of it all is, Las Vegas makes its own light, so you can shoot 24-7 there.

Valley of Fire Storm. 1/1000, f/8, ISO 1600. EOS 5D Mark III with EF 24-70 f/2.8L II. I managed to catch the Valley of Fire on one of the few days it rained all year.

Get over your objections

I know what your objections will be:

  • I can’t carry everything I need.
  • I don’t have room in my luggage.
  • I’m tired after a day of work.

I’ve said all of those myself, and at times, this attitude won out. But if you have a passion for taking pictures, you’ll find a way.  I carry a small travel tripod- a Gitzo 1541T.  It fits right in my luggage.  I realize that one’s a bit pricey, but there are many other options. Try a Gorillapod. They are small, lightweight, and come in a variety of sizes to fit almost any camera. Perfect for traveling light.

Don’t want to carry a DSLR?  Get yourself a smaller setup you won’t mind carrying.  I own a Canon G16 for when I don’t want to bring my full kit. I can still shoot RAW, have full manual control, but it’ll fit on my belt.  And if you do want a DSLR? Consider minimizing your kit for travel. Pick one or two lenses that can cover most of the standard range. I always have a hard time minimizing, but when I do, I usually carry my EOS 5D Mark III with EF 16-35 f/2.8L II and EF 24-70 f/2.8L II. This is the kit used for the shot of Fire Wave, and of Scenic Drive.  I added the EF 24mm f/1.4 for night shooting. If you’re using a DSLR with an APS-C sensor, an 18-135 is an excellent choice for a do-it-all lens.

I’m not saying finding the time is easy.  Sometimes it will require sacrifice. But I have never regretted spending even a minute with my camera, even when I was tired, or pulled in many directions.  If photography is a passion for you, you make time.  I’m not saying every day.  But I do make it a point to make time to indulge my passion.  You should too. Even if it’s just a minute.  In part two, I’ll discuss ways to make time when you’re at home.

EOS 5D Mark III with EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II. 1/25, f/8, ISO 640.
