HTC announces U Ultra 5.7″ phablet with 12MP camera

13 Jan

If you liked the camera performance of last year’s HTC 10 but would prefer a larger screen, the HTC U Ultra, which has been announced today, might just be what you’ve been waiting for. The Ultra U comes with the same rear camera module that can be found in the 5.2″ HTC 10. A 12MP 1/2.3″ sensor with 1.55µm pixels is combined with a fast F1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization. The camera also comes with phase detection AF and is capable of recording 4K video and 12-bit Raw files.

Compared to the HTC 10 the front camera has received a serious upgrade, though. It now comes with a 16MP resolution and a pixel-binning low-light mode that puts out 4MP files. Images can be viewed on a 5.7″ Quad-HD display that comes with a secondary small screen on top, similar to what we’ve seen on the LG V20. The Android OS is powered by Qualcomm’s  Snapdragon 821 and 4GB of RAM. 64GB and 128GB storage options are available and can be expanded via microSD slot.

Like the latest iPhones, the U Ultra lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack and only comes with a USB Type-C port. The latter is used to charge the comparatively small 3,000 mAh battery. Thankfully, quick-charging is supported. All the components are packed into HTC’s new ‘Liquid Surface’ design metal unibody that is entirely covered in glass, so a solid case might be a useful investment for future U Ultra owners. The new model will be available globally this quarter. In the US the U Ultra will set you back $ 749 and can be pre-ordered now. Start of shipping is slated for mid-March.

A shot in the dark: Casio launches 1.9MP camera for ultra low-light photography

06 Dec

Casio has announced an addition to the Exilim Outdoor Recorder line with a model that is designed to take stills and video in extremely dark conditions. The EX-FR110H uses a back-illuminated CMOS sensor with 1.9 million extra-large pixels that Casio claims are better at recording light when there isn’t much of it around.

Aimed at cavers, campers and those who enjoy a night safari the camera offers ISO 51200 and new noise suppression circuitry as well as a high speed EXilim engine HS ver.3.

Samples from Casio compare images taken with the FR110H with those taken on the company’s regular cameras

The camera features an f/2.8 lens with the angle of view of a 20mm on a full frame camera, while the 3in LCD screen has a special setting for working in very low light. The camera follows the detachable format of the FR series so that the body and the lens unit can be separated for remote capture with feature control maintained via Bluetooth. Casio says the camera is drop-, water-, freeze- and dust-proof, and that it can record Full HD video at 30fps and with 3 stops of stabilization.

Despite the camera’s low-light credentials, in the product information Casio helpfully points out that you can’t take pictures in the absence of light.

The Casio Exilim FR110H will be an Asia-only product, and will be released for sale on 9th December. For more information see this translation of the Casio product page.

Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 4K action cam unveiled with voice control

03 Sep

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_1954745106″,”galleryId”:”1954745106″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Garmin has introduced the VIRB Ultra 30, a rugged action camera capable of recording 4K/30fps footage. Despite its small size, Garmin packs a bunch of sensors and features into the camera, including GPS, voice control to start recording, a touchscreen display and a high-sensitivity microphone. The VIRB offers what Garmin calls 3-axis image stabilization, but it’s available up to 1440/60p, which leads us to believe it’s digital.

In addition to 4K footage, the new VIRB action camera can record 720p/240fps slow motion video and can capture 12 megapixel still images. Content is stored on a microSD card. The touchscreen display works when the camera is enclosed in its waterproof case, as does the microphone, according to Garmin. That waterproof case includes an anti-glare coated and water-repellant lens.

In addition to changing settings via the touchscreen display, the VIRB Ultra 30 supports Sensory TrulyHandsfree voice control. Commands like ‘OK Garmin, remember that’ for tagging moments and ‘OK Garmin, start recording’ are supported. Additionally, the camera can be controlled remotely using the VIRB app on a tablet or smartphone. The VIRB app is complemented by the Garmin VIRB Edit desktop software for post-processing.

The Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 is available in the U.S. now for $ 499, and will be available in the UK for £449 in Q3 2016.

Sony Xperia XA Ultra comes with 16MP OIS front cam

19 May

Sony first announced its new Xperia X line of smartphones at MWC earlier this year. Now the Japanese manufacturer has added another model to the line in the shape of the Xperia XA Ultra. As the ‘Ultra’ moniker suggests the new device is larger than the standard XA model. The XA Ultra display measures 6 inches instead of 5 but retains the 1080p resolution and overall design.

That said, the XA Ultra’s headline feature is its front camera. It comes with a 16MP Exmor R sensor, optical image stabilization and a front flash, making it a significant upgrade to the original XA’s front camera, which at 8MP is no slouch either. The wide 88 degree viewing angle should allow for group self-portraits without selfie-sticks or similar contraptions.  The main camera has been upgraded as well and features a 21.5MP Exmor RS sensor with Hybrid-AF, which sounds similar to the camera specification of the Xperia Z3+.

The rest of the specification arguably puts the XA Ultra into the mid-range bracket of the market. The Android 6.0 operating system is powered by a MediaTek MT6755 chipset and 3GB of RAM. 16GB of storage can be expanded via a microSD slot and Sony says the 2700 mAh battery is good for two days of use. Given the large screen, we’d take that statement with a pinch of salt though. The Sony Xperia XA Ultra will be available from July but no detail on pricing and regional availability has been released yet.

Please let me know what you think of this review! I’m thinking of doing more. I LOVE this lens! It’s my baby. All still shots taken by me with this lens at 10mm. Check my other videos for some more bits of cinematography with this lens, including hitting a pile of rice.
