Rural Urbanism: Forest Community of One-Pole Tree Houses

Pristine nature versus urban development seem ever at war, but this designer proposes a low-impact, small-footprint approach for cross-kingdom co-habitation between people and trees.

Konrad Wójcik of Aalborg, Denmark has modeled his design on the shape and functions of trees, envisioning a forest where these living modules are found interspersed within existing organic ecosystems rather than displacing them.

He notes that “for most of the animals, trees are the best natural shelters against predators, moisture and weather. Coincidence? We must remember that in nature nothing is accidental. Everything has a reason and a purpose. It all balance out.”

Place Vendome in Venice Gets Giant Bird Nest Tree Huts

Upon the centuries-old architecture of Place Vendome in Paris, nest-like structures of head-scratching proportions have appeared; messy wooden lean-to huts clinging to verdigris pillars and posh old buildings. It seems as if giant birds have descended upon the city and made it their home.

The parasitic structures are the ‘tree huts’ of Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata, a continuation of a series that has taken him around the globe.

Five small cabins have been installed in key places in the Place Vendome, including the Vendome column, built in 1702 as a monument to the armies of Louis XIV.

The confusion of wooden slats draws the curiosity of onlookers, wondering who – or what – could be inside. The structures will be up for a month as part of FIAC 2013, an art festival in Paris. Among the other places in which Tadashi’s parasitic architecture has been installed are New York’s Madison Square Garden, Florence and Switzerland.

A Tree Grows Inside This Modern Cylindrical Glass House

Would you give up all your privacy in order to live in a spectacular glass cylinder with a tree growing up the center? Perhaps the secluded forest location will help make that decision for you. ‘Tree in the House’ by Masov Aibek is a stunning four-story modern treehouse in the woods of Almaty City, Kazakhstan with transparent walls and a spiraling staircase.

The staircase takes you from one floor to the next along the outer perimeter of the house, with an opening in the center of each floor that grows wider as the tree’s branches stretch out toward the top. Plasterboard inner walls provide a little bit of organization and section off areas for lounging and a bed.

Aibek set out to create a romantic retreat for couples that nurtures “spiritual and creative development.”

Real as it looks, this is currently just a concept – but it’s on its way to being built. Construction will begin in early 2014 at an estimated cost of U.S. $ 361,000, and the architect is currently taking orders for more.

Treehouse Taster: 3 Wildly Different Types of Tree Houses

Regular readers will know that this site love tree houses of all types, but in researching articles a few have slipped through the cracks, their stories and histories unknown, yet the images of them are too amazing to go un-shown.

These more mysterious examples come from a combination of Pinterest and Repinly, and range from pragmatic well-constructed residences to wild and overgrown structures that seem to have grown alongside the trees they surround, with a few derelict and deserted ones somewhere in between. Above are two examples that seem organically evolved, pieced together around the growth of their trees.

Of the sturdily-constructed sort, this one looks like a regular small family home simply lodged in the branches of a big deciduous monster and bolstered by basic framing.

Finally, the tree homes of fairy tales – these two magical examples show that plans are one thing, but fantasy is another – sometimes the tree is just a foil for boisterous expressions of amazing and spontaneous architecture.

Tentsile: Extreme Travel Tree Tents Hang Like Hammocks

Hikers and campers have long been used to hanging food packs out of reach of bears and scavengers, but these tensile treehouse shelters take things a few steps further, allowing you to loft your entire portable residence amid any forest.

No more worrying about the weather or extreme landscapes like muddy swamps and desert sands. “Due to the unique design, the tent provides a level trampoline style floor in any terrain or inclination. It’s elevated position does away with the need to clear the site of foliage and provides separation from flood, sand storms, earth tremors, cold and lumpy ground as well as offering increased protection from wildlife, including insects, snakes and other predators.”

In theory, you could suspend these off the sides of cliffs or hover them above lands and streams since (setup, entry and exit excepted) the ground conditions are irrelevant. Tentsile describes their product line as being “the world’s most versatile tents. Whether you are looking for an all terrain camping solution, a safari safe house, a mountain or beach retreat, or a portable treehouse that avoids all planning restrictions, with Tentsile the sky really is the only limit.”‘

The various models have side and bottom entries in various configurations, with sleeping sections along the spokes and a central communal area familiar from many typical tents. Like a three-legged stool, the frame is held in tension from three points and is thus essentially self-balancing within the right tolerances. “The structure comprises a collapsible frame of webbing straps with fire retardant, UV PU and water resistant polyester fabric infill panels.”

(Cover) Lemon Tree – Fools Garden – One Man Band by Miguel P. Senent

Well, here is something I’ve been working on these last two weeks in my spare time. This song is simply awesome, everybody knows that, so I decided to do a full one man band cover 🙂 I started transcribing every sound I could hear in the original song, but I arranged it to be played using various instruments that are clearly not used in it, like my old Oboe, which I hadn’t played since I dropped it when I was 14! haha I recorded everything into REAPER using an M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface and the t.bone SC600. The electric guitars, bass, piano and synth were plugged directly into the interface via line in. Sadly I don’t own any drum set, so I had to do that using Addictive Drumms, a really cool vst plug-in. Guitar Rig 4 was used for both electric guitars and bass. The video was recorded using my Nikon D90 and edited in Sony Vegas. I hope you enjoy! And don’t forget to subscribe 😉 And thanks to my friend Jordi for the bass guitar!

The incredible offices of Inventionland design factory in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania look more like a theme park or movie sound stage than a workplace, keeping their employees inspired to come up with creative ideas of their own. Inventionland invents nearly 2,000 new items every year, putting out one product every three days.

The 70,000-square-foot space is divided into 16 different ‘sets’, each with a unique theme of its own. Falling the tree video 2.wmv

The video shows how difficult it was to bring down a storm damaged cypress tree that was threatening the boardwalk at Corkscrew Sanctuary. The tree fell into another tree and wedged at the top.

This is a simple test and preview video showing how you can shoot shots and have them transfer straight over on to an IPAD in real time. Excellent setup when shooting portraits or commercial work where the client can view images in real time and see how the images are coming together. The shot was taken with a Canon G10 with an Eye Fi Pro 8gb X2 card lighting from a Nikon SB800 triggered with Elinchrom Skyports. Software on the IPAD Shutter Snitch. I will be doing a more indepth shoot with the above setup but with a Nikon D300 with a compact flash to sd convertor card to show that the Eye Fi card can still be used.
