Nikon Tears – Video shot on D800.

20 Jan

This is a film Nikon asked me to shoot to show the capabilities of the D800 in different shooting scenarios as a professional DP. The film was shot almost entirely on the D800, with just a few shots on the D4. Mainly using the Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8, but also a few shots on the 105mm Macro (for the close ups of the eyes). The film was lit and professionally graded and edited in Los Angeles. Didn’t have very much light with me, so it was challenging at times, but a good representation of what the average amateur or semi-professional shooter might have with him in terms of equipment etc. I mainly used 1/100th degree shutter, as it improves almost all video without becoming visibly narrow and “shuttery”. All in all, the camera is very good in video mode and easy to use. Access to the only three things that are important when shooting video; shutter, ISO and F-stop was easily reached through dedicated buttons, rather than being hidden in some deep crap menu like on most other cameras. Very little rolling shutter, no visible artifacts and a decent exposure latitude. Not as good as a Red or an Arri Alexa, but for a DSLR it’s pretty impressive. As with all digital cinematography, you need to protect your highlights at all costs. Do not fall into the trap of “ISO-ing” up to compensate for not having any lighting like 99% of the clips on YouTube do. That will burn backgrounds/highlights into unrecoverable oblivion and look shit. Sometimes this means having no information in the

iFixit tears down the Nikon D600 – Chipworks confirms Sony sensor

08 Nov

iFixit.com has performed a complete tear-down of the Nikon D600, reducing it to its component parts to see how easy it is to repair. Nikon’s latest full-frame DSLR scored a low ‘repairability’ score, of 2 out of 10 since ‘most components almost require a certification in soldering in order to properly remove’. On the plus side, the tripod mount is easy to remove, if you ever cross-thread it accidentally. iFixit has also worked with semiconductor experts Chipworks to take a very close look at the D600’s 24MP CMOS sensor. Click through for more details, images, and a link to both iFixit and Chipworks’ tear-downs.

iFixit Tears down iPad Mini – finds it’s not easy to repair

01 Nov

ipadminiteardown.jpg

No-one takes gadgets apart quite like the guys at iFixit.com and they’ve just got their hands on Apple’s latest tablet, the pint-sized iPad Mini. Basically an iPad 2 in a smaller form factor, the Mini goes on sale tomorrow in the US. Thanks to a whole lot of glue holding the thing together and expensive battery replacement cost, the iPad Mini earns a low repairability score of 2 out of 10 on the iFixit scale. Click through for some sample images from the teardown and a link to the full, gory experience over at ifixit.com.

World-Warping Photography Bends, Twists & Tears Reality

21 Oct

[ By Delana in Art & Photography & Video. ]

Life feels rather rigid and unyielding sometimes, which is why it’s nice to have art like Jan Kriwol‘s into which we can escape momentarily. Kriwol’s series “Paper Realities” only consists of three photographs, but they are remarkable for their realism and their fun treatment of fantasy.

In all three of the photos, the photographer has made the world appear as no more substantial than a piece of paper. A young man casually breaks through a split in the very fabric of space/time in one picture. In another, a man’s powerful jump has caused wrinkles to appear in the paper world. And in the third, a disgruntled figure pulls angrily at a locked storefront, causing sharp wrinkles to appear all around.

The photographs are simple enough, but they reflect a desire that nearly all of us have had at one time or another: to reach out and change reality. Kriwol’s characters do just that by interacting with their surroundings as if they were no more substantial than a parking ticket.
