NASCAR teams up with DroneShield to bring down unwanted drones at racing events

It’s not just countries and federal agencies getting tough on drones, unruly or otherwise. According to a report from TechCrunch, NASCAR, the sanctioning body of multiple stock-car racing series in the United States and abroad, has struck a deal with anti-drone technology company DroneShield to help shoot down rogue drones at specific venues.

According to the report, DroneShield will be present at NASCAR-sanctioned events held at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas. This includes events for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and other feeder stock-car series throughout the 2019 season. Below is a promotional video captured and shared by DroneShield showing off its new DroneGun product:

In an email announcing the news, DroneShield CEO said ‘We are proud to be able to assist a high-profile event like this […] We also believe that this is significant for DroneShield in that this is the first known live operational use of all three of our key products – DroneSentinel, DroneSentry and DroneGun – by U.S. law enforcement.’

Despite being the first time its trifecta of products are being used, this isn’t the first time DroneShield has been used at major sporting events. DroneShield technology was used at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, as well as at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia most recently.

Dubble Film teams with film producer Revelog, renames products, tweaks price, and more

Film company Dubble Film has ended its partnership with KONO!, the German pre-exposed film producer, and instead teamed up with Revelog, the company has announced. Under the new partnership, Dubble Film has changed some of its product names, increased the number of exposures per film roll, lowered the cost per photo, and more.

Going forward, Dubble Film will sell its Moonstruck film under the new name Apollo, Monsoon under the name Pacific and Sunstroke under the name Solar. The company’s Jelly and Bubblegum film names remain unchanged, however. The new product names decrease confusion between the ‘Monsoon’ and ‘Moonstruck’ options and eliminate the negative association that comes with ‘Sunstroke.’

Additionally, each film roll now features 36 exposures instead of 24, and though prices have increased, the overall cost-per-photo is lower than before. The new 36-exposure rolls are priced at £12 / $ 15.35 per roll compared to the previous £10.50 / $ 13.87, which works out to a per-photo price of £0.33 / $ 0.43 versus the previous approx. £0.42 / $ 0.55 cost.

According to Dubble Film founder Adam Scott, via Kosmo Foto, the new film products have better tint under the Revelog partnership. The previous Dubble Film from KONO! inventory is currently being sold at a discounted £8 / $ 10.53 rate by Analogue Wonderland.

Report: Reuters to merge photography, video teams under unified ‘visual journalist’ team

A report from The Baron, an independent website dedicated to sharing news and information about Reuters, says Reuters is speeding up the process of merging its picture and video news departments into a single team of ‘visual journalists’ while at the same time making cuts to the number of jobs within the organization.

According to The Baron report, in an internal message to Reuters staff, John Pullman, global head of visuals at Reuters, said ‘In Visuals we will accelerate the moves already underway to create a single unified team of visual journalists […] Many of our photographers already shoot video – and videographers produce pictures. This mode of working is becoming normal throughout the industry as video and photo technologies grow closer. We will be taking a structured approach to merge our pictures and video teams. We will look at technology, training and workflow – and introduce single leadership where appropriate.’

The Baron reports the internal memo goes on to say ‘We aim to align our teams with the needs of our customers by extending our footprint, improving our efficiency and increasing our flexibility.’

According to the referenced memo, Pullman said the changes, which come as part of the reorganization as a separate business under the Thomson Reuters umbrella, will take place over the coming months. Unsurprisingly, the homogenization isn’t going over to well with Reuters staff.

A Reuters employee, who spoke under the condition of anonymity to The Baron, said ‘This is essentially the end of Reuters Pictures, going down the tubes in a very sad way. Pix has won a score of Pulitzers and other prestigious awards under Reuters but it seems that is not enough to save it from what appears to be the terrible end of what was a great run over more than 30 years which brought the world some of the best photojournalism it has ever seen.’

ONA teams up with Tutes, Adorama to release new capsule camera bag collection

Camera bag manufacturer ONA has partnered with Adorama and Bronx-based photographer Jose “Tutes” Tutiven to create a pair of camera bags for a new capsule collection.

The collection consists of ONA’s most popular camera bag and backpack, the Bowery and Camps Bay, with a new green and orange colorway that ONA says was “inspired by the classic MA-1 bomber jacket, a reference to Tutes’s personal style and Bronx roots.”

“Known for his trend-setting urban portraiture, Tutes has partnered with both ONA and Adorama since his early days as a full-time photographer,” reads ONA’s press release. “Most notably as one of the first photographers featured in Adorama TV’s popular “Through The Lens” web series.

The bags are constructed of 1000D Cordura material and include pebbled black leather accents around the zippers and compartments. Gunmetal solid brass hardware is used throughout both bags.

Gitzo teams up with Sony to launch tripod and L-bracket designed for ?-series cameras

As part of a collaboration between Vitec Group and Sony, Gitzo has introduced a new pair of products designed specifically for Sony ?7 and ?9 cameras: the Traveler ? Tripod and the L-Bracket ?.

The new products ‘feature a tailored design to perfectly fit Sony ?7 and ?9 camera models, helping to increase grip and stability for precise framing and extraordinary composition,’ according to Vitec Group.

Gitzo’s new Traveler ? is a ‘premium travel tripod’ featuring a new design and monochromatic color scheme to match the appearance of Sony ?-series cameras. It weighs just 1.43kg/3.15lbs, opens to 165cm/64.96in and holds up to 10kg/22lbs of gear. Like Gitzo’s other travel tripods, the Traveler ? folds down to just 43cm/16.93in when using the 180-degree leg-folding system.

The legs themselves are constructed of Carbon eXact tubing and use the Traveler G-lock system for securing the proper height. The Traveler ? is paired with Gitzo’s ‘most compact professional carbon fiber tripod head […] engineered to provide the ultimate smoothness and precision of movement and secure locking with independent pan/tilt lock.’ To wrap it all up, the special-edition tripod includes a genuine Italian leather carry strap designed to mimic the aesthetic of carbon fiber.

The second new product is the L-Bracket ?, which Gitzo calls ‘the lightest of its kind on the market,’ weighing in at just 77g/2.7oz. The bracket is milled from a single piece of aluminum ‘to become one with the most high-level professional mirrorless cameras on the market.’ Its design includes four attachment points for camera straps, an open design for easy access to ports and cables. There’s also a dedicated spot for the hex keys and accessories so you don’t need to carry another bag of tools around.

Think Tank teams up with SKB for hard cases, launches MindShift ‘PhotoCross’ sling bags

MindShift Gear has announced ‘PhotoCross,’ a new lineup of sling bags designed for adventure photographers. Coming alongside this announcement is one from sister company Think Tank Photo, which has teamed up with SKB to offer the latter company’s hard cases fitted with soft inner dividers and organizers from Think Tank. The SKB/Think Tank hard case lineup currently includes 10 models.

The new hard case lineup comprises ‘SKB designed by Think Tank’ models featuring SKB’s own waterproof and durable iSeries hardshell exteriors. Think Tank has fitted its own internal modular organizers and protective padding into the cases, including movable dividers and lid organizers. The hard case lineup ranges in price from $ 109.99 to $ 329.99.

Joining those hard cases is MindShift Gear’s PhotoCross 10 and PhotoCross 13 bags for photographers in the field. Both bags feature space for photographic gear and either a 10-inch tablet (the PhotoCross 10) or up to a 13-inch laptop (the PhotoCross 13). The bags’ designs include T-pulls, carrying handles on both the side and top, a 320G breathable air-mesh back panel, a pocket that can accommodate most 1-liter water bottles and a 3-point harness.

The PhotoCross 10 bag can accommodate either a mirrorless camera body and up to five lenses or an ungripped DSLR and up to two lenses plus a tablet. Google teams with IMAX to create next-gen VR rigs for the film industry

At its I/O developer conference this week, Google announced a new partnership with IMAX to develop next-gen VR camera rigs for use in the film industry. These camera rigs will be different than Google’s previously unveiled GoPro VR rig, but will likewise utilize the company’s Jump virtual reality platform for post-processing. The cameras are being created in part with tech from Chinese company Yi Technology. Likewise, IMAX has announced plans to open VR experience spaces in six locations across the US.

The companies haven’t revealed any details about the planned cameras at this time, except that they will feature Jump integration. The announcement comes at a time when competing high-end VR cameras have made public debuts, including the 4K-capable $ 2500 Sphericam 2 and Nokia’s $ 60,000 OZO camera.
