AnonyMouse: Tiny Rodent-Sized Shops Installed Along Swedish Sidewalks

It would be easy to miss this incredibly tiny rodent-sized shop set into a wall in Malmö, Sweden, if not for the lights advertising its red-and-white-striped awning and the miniature foods in its window. Crouch down, peer beyond the glass and you’l see an enticing array of nuts displayed like bread and meat. Then, all of the other details start to register, and you realize just how complex this installation really is.

The miniature intervention is the work of AnonyMouse, an anonymous art collective posting images of the scene on Instagram. It features the ‘Noix de Vie’ (Nuts of Life) bakery alongside an Italian bistro called ‘Il Topolino,’ with a cafe table, picnic blanket and planter set up outside.

The walls outside the businesses are plastered with tiny posters that say things like “peace, love & polar bears” and advertise a movie called “Night of the Were-Rat.” The bakery and restaurant are both full of minuscule framed photos and a tiny menu is posted outside the door. A spray-painted Guy Fawkes face bears mouse ears in a twist on classic Anonymous imagery.

The gritty details of the scene really drive home its realism, from the peeling paint and tiny weeds in the sidewalk cracks to the weathered, padlocked utility box. The installation is a hit with passersby, and the creators say people have been bringing their pet rodents to visit.

“Without spoiling too much we can tell you that we’re working on a new scene, and in 2017 you’re going to be able to see plenty more!”

Swedish court rules drone photography is surveillance and requires a permit

Sweden’s Supreme Administrative Court has issued a ruling that classifies drone photography as surveillance, thus meaning operators of drones with cameras would need to obtain a surveillance license – an unlikely case for members of the public. Swedish drone owners are understandably upset with the ruling, stating that it will effectively kill an entire industry. Local media outlets also find it troubling, since no exceptions are made for journalistic applications.

UAS Sweden, an organization of Swedish drone operators, plans to try to convince lawmakers that the decision is an overreaction that will have a tremendous negative impact on their industry. Either way, the policy will likely be difficult to enforce. Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet points out that local police seem unlikely to prioritize any reports of suspected unauthorized surveillance.

Rural Retrofuturism: Dystopian Visions of Swedish Countrysides

Set in an alternate-reality Sweden of the 1980s and 90s, these stunning paintings remix pastoral landscapes with futuristic robots, telling a story of a world that could have been. Robots roam alongside dinosaurs while people go about their everyday lives in surreal juxtapositions that seem all the more real for their everyday contents.

Simon Stålenhag‘s artwork has spread like digital wildfire across the internet over the last few years, and the announcement of a pair of English-language books (Tales from the loop) of his images and stories has been met with overwhelming support – his crowdfunding campaign has already raised more than 25 times is modest original goal.

The backstory could be the plot for an upcoming science fiction movie if fans have their way: “In the 1950s, the Swedish government orders the construction of a large particle accelerator. The state agency RIKSENERGI is tasked with developing this massive project. In 1969 the The Facility For Research In High Energy Physics is ready, located deep below the pastoral Mälaröarna-countryside. The local population soon calls it THE LOOP.”

“The side effects of the project are dramatic. Strange sightings and bizarre rumours taints the scientific image of The Loop. In the shadow of the weird machines filling the countryside, life continues as normal. The kids of Mälaröarna grew up living above the technological marvel of The Loop, but for them it was just a part of their very ordinary lives. Until strange beasts from another time showed up, that is.”

1 April, 2014 – Announcing A Unique Swedish Troll Workshop

Iceland, Antarctica, the Amazon, not to mention the National Parks in the U.S. and Canada are old hat. Everyone has been there, done that.

With this in mind, in cooperation with Swedish / Mexican photographer Lars Svenstrom we are expanding our workshop activities in 2015 to include Sweden. We will explore the deep woods on the slopes of the southern Scandia Mountains where bears, moose, wolves, wolverine and lynx roam.

And if we are really fortunate, we hope to encounter and photograph the highly elusive target of this adventure – trolls.

Just a quick note to our friends, to say that Lula, Chris and I have arrived safely back in Toronto after 5 days on the road driving back from Mexico. Blue skies all the way. Spring is springing.
