Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 – Stop Asking to Save Ink Annotations!

06 Aug

Prevent PowerPoint 2010 from even asking to save ink annotations after a presentation.

When you give presentations with Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, you might choose to use the Pen or Highlighter tools. These can draw attention to a portion of a slide, draw shapes, write text, etc.

After exiting a presentation, PowerPoint 2010 asks if you want to save these ink annotations. However, if you give the same presentation to multiple audiences, the annotations may only be for the benefit of one group of people and do not need to be kept. So why have PowerPoint ask you this when you can configure an option that automatically discards them?…

Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 – Stop Showing Photo or Video Previews When Hovering

04 Apr

Instead, hover over a photo or video in Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 to display the filename and date / time.

When you hover over a photo or video in Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011, a pop-up appears displaying a larger preview of the file.

If you have a slower computer / graphics card, you may wish to disable this eye candy. Or, instead of showing this preview you may wish to show the filename and time / date as a popup instead. To make this change, do the following:…

Windows Live Mail 2011 – Stop Asking to Send Read Receipts

29 Jan

Configure Windows Live Mail 2011 to ignore read receipt requests instead of prompting you each time.

You may occasionally receive an e-mail via Windows Live Mail 2011 that comes with a Read Receipt request. This is done by the sender to help ensure their messages actually make it to their destinations.

While there are many valid reasons for people to ask for read receipts, you may be concerned about privacy and never want to answer these requests. Thus, instead of always responding no to read receipt requests, you can quickly configure the software to ignore these silently:…

Microsoft Word 2010 – Dashes, Fractions, and Ordinals! Oh My! Stop the Replacing.

30 Oct

Prevent Word 2010 from replacing dashes, fractions, and ordinals with characters that might not be desired or even viewable in all situations.

Microsoft Word 2010 has a habit of trying to make documents look better, features that many people normally appreciate.

For example, Word 2010 automatically changes dashes, fractions, and ordinals to characters that may appear nicer onscreen and on harcopy. However, sometimes you may wish to disable this behavior. For example, if you write text in Word 2010 and transfer it to an HTML webpage, these converted characters may look fine to you – but not to those running other operating systems who happen to visit your page. Thus, the following tweaks show how to turn these conversions off:…

Microsoft Excel 2010 – Stop Creating Workbooks with Multiple Worksheets

30 Oct

Or, create every Excel 2010 workbook with even more than 3 worksheets.

When you create a new workbook in Microsoft Excel 2010, it is automatically created with three worksheets. Depending on your needs, you may rarely use more than one worksheet in an Excel 2010 workbook, finding the extra worksheets gratuitous. Or, you may often create complex workbooks where many more worksheets are needed. Editing the default setting to create more worksheets may save you time in the long run.

1. Select the “File” tab in the Ribbon….

Microsoft Word 2010 – Stop Selecting Entire Words!

16 Oct

When selecting text in a Word 2010 document, prevent the application from forcing you to select entire words.

If you use the mouse to select text in a Microsoft Word 2010 document, you may notice that after you select one word, preceding or following words are selected automatically as you move the mouse – you cannot select individual letter of the words.

If you tire of this behavior and want more fine-tuning in your text selection without having to use the keyboard to select text, do the following:…

Microsoft Word 2010 – Stop the Not So Smart Quotes

09 Oct

Prevent Word 2010 from converting your quotes into those that don’t always paste well into other applications and documents.

Microsoft Word 2010 has a tendency to perform a great deal of correcting as you type, useful if you keep typing in teh instead of the (unless you really want to type in teh Internets, which in this case Word can be annoying). Among this happily-correcting behavior is the changing of quotation marks to “smart quotes”, ones where the quotes slant at an angle.

Unfortunately, if you copy and paste documents containing “smart quotes” into other applications, such as web page editors, these quotes may not appear as desired. Worse, you might paste them into an HTML document, notice that the quotes look fine on screen, but users with other browsers / operating systems may see strange characters instead of the quotes. Definitely not so smart… So, how can you disable them?…
