A Compact Solar Charger that Fits in the Palm of Your Hand

15 Jul

Extra photos for bloggers: 1, 2, 3

Your morning yoga routine brings you energy to make it through the day.

The Solio Sun Powered Charger has its own yoga-like abilities, turning sun salutations into battery power to recharge your phone.

Position the Solio outside on a sunny day, or plug it directly into an outlet and it will gather power.

This li’l guy can soak up enough sun to give your phone an 80% boost. It’ll even hold on to that power for up to a year, so it’s there when you need it.

The Solio is compact and travel friendly. Tuck it along side your yoga mat for a boost anywhere and anytime you need photo taking power.

Street Smart: Solar Roadway Lights Up & Feeds Power Grid

21 May

[ By WebUrbanist in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

solar roadway graphic design

Currently in crowdfunding, these hexagonal pavers can provide energy, melt accumulated snow and ice, light up with LEDs, all while being tough enough to support trucks weighing 250,000 pounds.

Designed by American electrical engineer Scott Brusaw to work everywhere from roads, parking lots and driveways to sidewalks, bike paths and playgrounds, you can walk, drive or park on these hexagrams with ease. They have been extensively tested for load-bearing capacity as well as traction and impact resistance.

More about the project from IndieGoGo (graphics by Sam Cornett): “Solar Roadways is a modular paving system of solar panels that can … pay for themselves primarily through the generation of electricity, which [in turn] can power homes and businesses connected via driveways and parking lots.”

Current working prototypes are already powerful, as demonstrated above. Beyond existing capabilities there are many possibilities for further development, including mutual induction technologies that would allow charging while driving and more complex LED systems to create changing road displays on demand.

Extreme X-Class Solar Flare Is Erasing Digital & Film Photos Worldwide

01 Apr

This mornings Solar flare corruption of my photography library

In a stunning event shocking NASA, the European Space Agency and the Russian Federal Space Agency the Sun flexed its power last night with an unprecedented X-Class solar flare (Update: some astrophysicists are contending it’s the first detected Z-Class solar flare). Unlike extreme solar events like the Carrington Event this solar storm has erased film and digital photos world-wide. Prints, film negatives and digital files have shockingly been affected equally being erased into oblivion. Neil deGrasse Tyson was quoted as saying,

iPhone Image Library Corrupted by Solar Flare

“The sun once again has humbled us with its power. With a single awe inspiring brush stroke of  projected radiation, the Sun has erased our visual history leaving us to remember moments of times past with only our heart and minds.”

Completely confused this morning seeing blank sheets of paper where my favorite family photos and wall prints once existed I rushed to my computer and phone to see the state of my digital libraries. Everything was gone. In a fit of amazement and cursing I rushed to check my slides and negatives from the 90′s and they too are now history being completely blank. In hindsight I now wish I savored the moments I photographed to better remember them verses my fuzzy memory of these moments as seen through a small view finder. Now that this fast moving storm of radiation has passed new photos are now again possible. Even though I am now again able to take photos seeing the fragility of our imaging technologies it begs the questions…

Is humanity’s creativity, existence & legacy what we see, feel, or leave behind?

Liters of Light: DIY Solar from Used Bottles, Bleach & Water

28 Mar

liters of light roofs

Now setting its sights on a million homes, the organization behind this remarkably cheap approach to solar home lighting has already transformed the lives of thousands who were previously living in the dark.

liter of light roof

Installed in the metal roofs of windowless shacks, bottles of water help spread incoming light while the bleach keeps each bottle clean and clear, resulting in an output equivalent to that of a 60-watt bulb.

These light bottles reduce the fire danger posed by poor electrical connections, cuts down on the cost of electric lighting and encourages recycling at the same time.

But a big part of the brilliance of the endeavor, pardon the pun, is in the simplicity of installation: effectively anyone can scavenge the major materials involved and teach others how to put them in place.

A Liter of Light grew out of an idea by Alfredo Moser from Brazil, enhanced by MIT students and aimed at addressing a problem facing millions in the Philippines: the absolute absence of natural light in their often-informal dwellings. Their latest goal is to raise funds to install these light bottles in homes across Manila.

Solar Socket: Portable Plug-In Creates Free Energy to Go

22 May

[ By WebUrbanist in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

window socket

With batteries running low, your eye roams the room for a place to plug in, but then you remember: you brought your own power supply. Portable, easy and green, this solar socket design is a stroke of genius, able to both generate and hold a charge.

window portable power generator

A suction cup lets you stick the converter to any flat glazed surface, putting photovoltaic panels on the outside and a customary energy outlet on the other. And if you are worried about what happens at night or in overcast conditions: the device itself can store energy for in-place or mobile use.

window mounted solar cells

Kyuho Song & Boa Oh have added a few other functional quirks to the design: rotate your charger plug and you kill the power, spinning a circular cut-off switch built into the face plate. There is a second manual on/off switch on the bottom as well.

Lunar Power: Solar Spheres Energized by Both Sun & Moon

24 Apr

[ By WebUrbanist in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

lunar energy orb

This liquid-filled glass sphere design is so powerful (no pun intended) in its ability to turn light into heat that it can not only harvest the rays of the sun, but even draw on energy reflected from the moon.

lunar energy thermal concentration

André Broessel is the European architect and engineer behind this weatherproof harvesting system. It is in many regards more robust, efficient and versatile than traditional photovalics, concentrating available light sources and multiplying their thermal effect more than 10,000-fold.

lunar solar collecting ball

Made to be mounted on buildings individually or in arrays, a computerized control system passively tracks available illumination in the day, but can even follow and be fueled by moonlight.

lunar power architectural applications

The balls can work both to generate power and as replacements to traditional window apertures, creating a wide variety of potential hybrid architectural applications as well.
