Fujifilm X-T2 Graphite Silver Edition goes up for sale online

26 Jan

The Fujifilm X-T2 Graphite Silver Edition is now available for purchase from several online retailers for $ 1800 (without battery grip). This special edition brings all of the X-T2’s features alongside a triple-layer coating finish described as both ‘durable and aesthetic.’ The special edition camera is joined by an aluminum hot shoe, graphite silver EF-X8 shoe-mounted flash, and a leather camera strap.

The Graphite Silver’s triple-layer coating is preceded by an antioxidant treatment for the camera’s magnesium body, which is followed by the coating’s first layer, a matte black primer. That primer is then covered with paint particles using Thin-Film Multilayer Coating Technology, lending the graphite silver appearance. The last layer is a clear coat to add both shine and durability.

The camera has appeared on multiple retailers’ websites, including B&H Photo, Ace Photo, and Adorama. A model that includes a battery grip is also offered for $ 1900.

Fujifilm unveils Graphite Silver X-Pro2 and X-T2

05 Jan

As it did with the X-T1, Fujifilm is now offering a new ‘graphite silver’ color for the X-Pro2 and X-T2, produced using a multilayered coating. The X-Pro2 will come bundled with a matching XF23mm F2 R WR lens and hood.

The graphite silver X-Pro2 and X-T1 will ship in late January for $ 2299 and $ 1799, respectively.

New FUJIFILM X-Pro2 Body with XF23mmF2 R WR Lens and Lens Hood Kit, Graphite Edition

The new FUJIFILM X-Pro2 Graphite Edition boasts an all-new color to the X Series lineup. The X-Pro2 Graphite Edition has a rich, metallic texture due to a specialty multilayer coating. This edition will include the compact and lightweight FUJIINON XF23mmF2 R WR and LH-XF35-2 lens hood in the same unique Graphite color as the body, achieving high resolution performance and a fast and silent AF system. The new FUJIFILM X-Pro2 Graphite Edition maintains the features of the current X-Pro2, adopting an extremely high-grade graphite color created through a multilayer coating process for the exterior of the camera body. By increasing the amount of black pigment component of the top coating, the camera achieves a more rich metallic texture. The package will be released as the FUJIFILM X-Pro2 Body with XF23mmF2 R WR Lens and Lens Hood Kit, Graphite Edition in late January 2017.

New FUJIFILM X-T2 Body, Graphite Silver Edition

Building on the popularity of the elegant Graphite Silver version of the X-T1, Fujifilm introduces the new FUJIFILM X-T2 Graphite Silver Edition which will be supplied with tailor-made accessories including a premium leather strap, aluminum hot shoe cover and matching EF-X8 hot-shoe mount flash. The X-T2 Graphite Silver Edition is treated with a multi-layer coating that is triple baked to produce an elegant and tactile finish. The first layer is a matte black undercoat, applied to the magnesium top cover. This undercoat delivers deeper blacks in shadow areas to make highlights stand out. The second layer uses Thin-film Multilayer Coating Technology to apply graphite silver for an incredibly smooth finish with a luxurious shine. The third layer is a clear varnish for a glossy finish. The new X-T2 Graphite Silver Edition will be released in late January 2017.

Availability and Pricing

The FUJIFILM X-T2 Graphite Silver Edition will be released in late January 2017 in the U.S. and Canada for USD $ 1,799.95 and CAD $ 2,199.99.

The FUJIFILM X-Pro2 Graphite Edition will be released in late January 2017 in the U.S. and Canada for USD $ 2,299.95 and CAD $ 2,899.99.

A Silver Lining: 14 Cloud-Shaped Homes, Furnishings & Decor Designs

cloud-shaped-floating-speaker-main

Floating on air, flickering with lightning, providing a pillowy soft surface or gently raining water down on plants, these cloud-shaped home accents and architectural designs are downright heavenly. A bluetooth speaker magically levitates above its base, a lamp provides motion-activated thunderstorm shows, a concrete display base makes toilet paper commercials literal in their comparisons and a house in Australia takes on a highly unusual silhouette.

Levitating Cloud Speaker by Richard Clarkson Studio + Crealev

cloud-shaped-floating-speaker

cloud-shaped-floating-speaker-2

cloud-shaped-floating-speaker-3

A cumulus cloud hovers over a wooden base, floating up to two inches above the surface, bobbing back and forth. That cloud is actually a speaker, and it levitates using the power of magnets. ‘Making Weather’ blends Crealev’s magnetic levitation technology with Richard Clarkson’s artificial cloud designs for an eye-catching product that flickers with ‘lightning’ when you play music.

Knitted Cloud Stools by Studio Joon&Jung

cloud-shaped-knitted-stool

cloud-shaped-knitted-stool-2

Chunky skeins of wool get hand-knitted into soft, cloudily masses made to sit atop wooden stools. Say the designers, Joon+Jung, “Cloud Stool is inspired by the flexibility and softness of the cloudscape. It can be singular or become a group as a human being. It gives the illusion that it’s alive, by using irregularity, flexibility and subtle differences in tone of perception. Conclusively, the form interacts between objects, and people could explore with it.”

Concrete Cloud Toilet Paper Holder

cloud-shaped-toilet-paper-holder

cloud-shaped-toilet-paper-holder-2

This might just be the most clever display of backup toilet paper ever created, yet it’s so simple. A curving concrete base lets you stack the rolls into a cloud shape, fitting up to 14 rolls for the large size, and it’s also available in a smaller size for space-challenged bathrooms.

Cloud House by McBride Charles Ryan

cloud-shaped-house

cloud-shaped-house-2

cloud-shaped-house-4

This modern home addition by McBride Charles Ryan expands the back of an Edwardian house in Victoria, Australia, with a glazed end looking out onto a long, narrow lap pool. “The new living addition faces due south while allowing controlled north sun into the living area and providing effective cross ventilation,” say the architects. “The form of the ‘cloud’ conforms to setback regulations without appearing obviously determined by them. The extrusion creates a dramatic interior language where walls merge seamlessly with the floor and ceiling. While the geometry is playful, the extrusion is essentially a contemporary barrel vault. It is our hope that this cloud has a ‘silver lining.’

Le Nuage by Wout Wessemius

Puffs of ultra-realistic clouds glow as if caught by rays of sunlight, illuminated from within by energy-efficient bulbs and hung from the ceiling. ‘Le Nuage’ by Netherlands-based designer Wout Wessemius is a particularly striking version of the ‘cloud lamp’ phenomenon that swept through the industrial design world over the last few years.

Liquid Shard: Fluttering Silver Cloud Hovers Over Los Angeles Square

A “universally despised” postmodern public square in Los Angeles is getting a second look this week with the addition of a surreal glittering silver cloud that undulates in the air above the concrete, seemingly floating without any supports. Tethered from a 10-story purple bell tower to a lower corner of the park, the latticework installation is made of thousands of holographic mylar strips that flutter in the breeze. The work is a collaboration between patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics and the AA Visiting School of Los Angeles, a week-long design program for art students.

What an amazing sight in Pershing Square!!

A video posted by Lori Erhardt (@poopsienyc) on

Due for a makeover in 2019 that will replace much of the concrete with grass and create shade canopies, Pershing Square tends to be empty and quiet despite renewed vitality in other areas of downtown L.A. It’s one of the city’s oldest public spaces, but had its trees and grass ripped out in 1951 so a parking garage could be installed beneath it.

Poetic Kinetics is known for creating many of the massive, colorful creations that appear at Burning Man each year. Sharon says he was inspired by nature and “the feeling that we are only aware on a very surface level of what is really going on around us. We feel the currents of air on our skin but do not see the larger movements.”

Leica introduces silver version of the APO-SUMMICRON-M 50mm F2 ASPH

26 Jul

German camera manufacturer Leica has announced that it is to introduce a version of its premium f/2 standard lens for the M system finished in anodised silver. Until now the lens, which was first announced in 2012, has only been available in a black finish. Leica claims this manual focus 50mm is the best quality lens it produces for the M system, which perhaps goes some way to explaining its $ 7795/£5600 price tag.

The new silver version of the lens however will cost a little extra, at $ 7995/£5900.

The lens is classed in the company’s ‘fast and compact’ series, and uses eight elements in five groups including three APO elements and two that have what the company describes as a ‘high refractive index’. The lens weighs 10.58oz/300g and measures 1.85in/47mm in length and 2.09in/53mm in diameter.

The new silver APO-SUMMICRON-M 50mm f/2 ASPH will be available at the end of the month. For more information visit the Leica website.

Press release

LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-M 50mm f/2 ASPH.

Sharpest ever standard lens now available in silver anodised finish

Leica Camera has today announced that the APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH. is now available in a silver anodised version. Thanks to its meticulous optical design, high quality materials, and sophisticated manufacturing and finishing process, this high-performance lens is considered to be the reference lens among standard focal lengths.

With its combination of exceptional sharpness and imaging performance that captures and resolves even the finest details, the APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. is characterised by extremely high contrast rendition from corner to corner of the image – at maximum aperture and throughout the aperture range. The use of a floating element in its design ensures that this is also maintained at close shooting distances.

Eight lens elements are employed to achieve this outstanding optical performance. Three of the lenses are made from glass types with anomalous partial dispersion or apochromatic correction, and two have a high refractive index. The specially-formulated glass employed is based on original developments from the former Leitz glass laboratory, and the use of this particular glass requires extensive effort and many years of experience. Thanks to continuous advancements in optical technology, processes have since been refined and perfected to achieve the best possible image quality.

As with all other Leica lenses, the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. was designed and developed by Leica specialists in Wetzlar and represents the perfect combination of optical and technical expertise. Exceptionally reliable with enduring value, and with the ‘Made in Germany’ quality guarantee, the lens is manufactured from the finest materials and is meticulously assembled by hand. This combination of cutting-edge technology and precise manufacturing procedures ensures consistent excellence at all times.

Pricing and availability

The Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. (silver anodised) is scheduled to be available at the end of July 2016 at a suggested retail price of £5,900 including VAT.

Rogue FlashBender 2 XL Pro Frank Doorhof Edition features ‘Super Soft Silver’ reflector

16 Jun

Rogue has introduced a new FlashBender 2 XL Pro reflector designed in collaboration with photographer Frank Doorhof. The reflector uses ‘Super Soft Silver’ fabric, a material that produces an effect that falls somewhere between the soft lighting created by white fabric and the harsher, more contrasty reflections of sliver fabric.

The FlashBender 2 XL Pro is the largest FlashBender model at 13in x 16in / 33cm x 41cm; it includes a belt and buckle for attachment to a flash, and an adjustable shape for altering the direction of light.

The Rogue FlashBender 2 XL Pro Super Soft Silver Reflector is available now from Rogue for $ 59.95.

Press release:

ExpoImaging, Inc., creator of the patented FlashBender shapeable light modifiers for off-camera flash photography, today announced availability of the new Rogue FlashBender 2 XL Pro Super Soft Silver Reflector, Frank Doorhof edition.

“Photographers looking for more contrast in their images while shooting flash on location will love this new Super Soft Silver FlashBender 2 XL Pro,” said Erik Sowder, ExpoImaging CEO. “Highly reflective shiny silver fabric is prone to hot spots and is often too bright and too contrasty for portraiture, especially in brighter light. Our custom Super Soft Silver fabric falls between harsh shiny silver and soft white fabrics. It is brighter and more “edgy” than white fabric while producing a softer and more even light than shiny silver fabric.”

Professional photographer and lighting instructor Frank Doorhof is a master of using edgy light and contrast to create remarkable images. “I love more edge in my images,” said Frank, so when he first saw Rogue’s Super Soft Silver fabric, he knew he wanted a version of the Rogue FlashBender 2 XL Pro Reflector incorporating the fabric. Thus, the Rogue FlashBender 2 XL Pro Super Soft Silver Reflector, Frank Doorhof edition was born.

Designed for portability to pack flat in most camera bags or laptop compartments, the 12” x 16” (30.5cm x 40.5cm) FlashBender 2 XL Pro reflector is the largest FlashBender. Building on the success of the popular Rogue FlashBender light modifiers for speedlights, FlashBender 2 reflectors can be shaped to control the direction of light from an accessory flash, and FlashBender 2’s improved belt and buckle design provides a faster and more secure attachment to your flash.
With the control, versatility and portability of all FlashBenders and a Super Soft Silver reflective surface, the Frank Doorhof edition FlashBender 2 XL Pro Reflector represents a unique new photographic tool to create spectacular images.

Pricing and Availability

The Rogue FlashBender 2 XL Pro Super Soft Silver Reflector is available from ExpoImaging’s distribution partners worldwide or online at RogueFlash.com. The Rogue FlashBender 2 XL Pro Super Soft Silver Reflector retails for $ 59.95.

8 Reasons to Use Silver Efex Pro 2 for Your Black and White Conversions

13 Jun

Silver Efex Pro 2 review

You can convert colour photos to black and white in Photoshop and Lightroom (or your Raw conversion software of choice). But the last few years have also seen an increase in the number of plug-ins built to do nothing else, other than convert photos to monochrome.

Today I’m going to look at what many people consider to be the best black and white plug-in around – Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro 2. Rather than provide a comprehensive review of the software, I’m going to look at some of the things you can do with it that you can’t (or would be much more difficult) in Photoshop or Lightroom.

1. Presets

Silver Efex Pro 2 has 38 presets that you can use as starting points for your processing work, including vintage looks as well as modern ones. This places the plug-in ahead of Photoshop, and probably ahead of Lightroom too. You can buy Develop Presets for Lightroom, but it will be difficult to find some that give you as many options as those in Silver Efex Pro 2.

Here’s a sample of some of the presets. The original colour photo is shown top left.

Silver Efex Pro 2 review

2. There are more tools for enhancing texture

Silver Efex Pro 2 review

The full set of Contrast and Structure sliders in Silver Efex Pro 2.

One of the elements that makes black and white photos so effective is texture. You can enhance texture in both Photoshop and Lightroom (the Contrast and Clarity sliders are my favourite tools for this) but Silver Efex Pro 2 takes it several steps further.

The Contrast sliders

Silver Efex Pro 2 has four sliders for adjusting contrast. The Contrast slider is the same as the one in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw. The Amplify Whites and Amplify Blacks sliders let you increase Contrast in the highlights and shadows respectively. There’s also a Soft Contrast slider that increases contrast but in a less aggressive way, almost as if there is an overlay of gaussian blur. This slider is very useful for portraits.

If you get carried away with the Contrast sliders you can lose detail in the highlights and shadows. So, in addition to the four sliders already mentioned, there are two Tonality Protection sliders used to bring back detail in clipped areas.

Silver Efex Pro 2 review

These portraits show the difference between Contrast and Soft Contrast. Soft Contrast is ideal for portraits, while Contrast is better for subjects like architecture and the landscape.

The Structure sliders

Structure slider is similar to Clarity in Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw. But while in those programs the Clarity slider affects all the tones in the selected area, in Silver Efex Pro 2 you can choose to adjust Structure independently in the shadows, midtones and highlights. There is also a Fine Structure slider for increasing mid-tone contrast in areas of fine detail.

Silver Efex Pro 2 review

The above photo shows three close-ups of the same portrait used earlier.

Top: A neutral black and white conversion, with no increase in Clarity.

Middle: This is what happens when you increase Clarity to 100% in Lightroom (note that you wouldn’t normally push it that far for a portrait, I did it here to show you the effect). Clarity is increased uniformly across the frame, affecting the skin tones as well as the hair.

Bottom: Shadows Structure set to 100% in Silver Efex Pro 2. Only the shadows are affected, leaving the midtones and highlights alone. This brought out the detail in the model’s hair and eyes, but left her skin untouched. You would have to use a selection or a mask in Photoshop or the Adjustment Brush in Lightroom to achieve the same effect.

3. Control Points make local adjustments easy

Just like in Photoshop and Lightroom you can apply adjustments locally as well as globally, using a system called Control Points.

A Control Point is the centre of a circle within which you can make tonal adjustments. The adjustment is applied to tones similar in brightness and colour to the pixels underneath the Control Point itself. For example, if you place a Control Point over a dark tone, then increase the brightness, only the dark tones within the circle are adjusted. Light tones remain untouched.

Silver Efex Pro 2 review

The yellow and black dot marks the Control Point. Adjustments are made to pixels matching the colour and brightness of the pixels underneath it. There are seven sliders you can adjust: Brightness (Br), Contrast (Co), Structure (St), Amplify Whites (AW), Amplify Blacks (AB), Fine Structure (FS) and Selective Colorization (SC).

It may sound complicated but it only takes a little practice to understand how it works. You can use as many Control Points as you want in an image, and group them together to cover areas that don’t conform easily to a circular shape.

4. Selective colouring is easy

Selective colouring is the technique of converting an image to black and white while leaving part of it in colour. This is easy with Silver Efex Pro 2 as all you have to do is place a Control Point over the area where you want to retain colour.

I used two Control Points in the following example, one on each coloured shutter:

Silver Efex Pro 2 review

5. The History panel is excellent

Silver Efex Pro 2 has the best History panel I’ve seen in any software. Every adjustment you make to your photo is listed.

Silver Efex Pro 2 review

The History panel works together with the Compare view. The yellow tab on the left indicates the photo used for the Before view, and the entry used for the After view is displayed in yellow text. This simple method lets you compare any two entries in the History panel.

6. The Zone System

Silver Efex Pro 2 can show you where the tones in your photo fall within the eleven zones of the Zone System. One useful application of this is that you can use it to see which areas of your photo may block up in print because they are too dark or too light.

This screenshot shows the tones which fall into zone 3. They are indicated by the brown diagonal lines.

Silver Efex Pro 2 review

7. Black and White film emulation

The Film Types panel gives you a choice of 18 different black and white films. When you choose one the plug-in emulates the tonality and grain structure of the selected film. It’s an easy way to get the film look without having to shoot, develop, and scan black and white film.

8. Silver Efex Pro 2 comes bundled with other software

Silver Efex Pro 2 is part of the Nik Collection, which includes seven applications and costs $ 149. That works out to less than $ 25 a plug-in.

Note: If you’re on a tight budget, the standalone version of OnOne Software’s Perfect Photo Suite 8 represents even better value at $ 79. Click the link to learn more.

Leica unveils D-Lux 6 Silver Edition

24 Oct

dl6silver2.png

Just in time for the holiday season, Leica has announced a ‘Silver Edition’ of its D-Lux 6 premium compact camera, with a high-gloss black body and silver lens barrel. The camera also gets a new accessory: the Leica Soft Pouch in lambskin nappa leather, which the company says features a ‘fascinating wrap-around design’. The camera is otherwise the same as the standard D-Lux 6 (and by extension, very similar to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7).
