Dense City: Photos Show Tightly-Packed Hong Kong Towers

density in hong kong

Twice as dense as New York, and four times as crowded as London, Hong Kong is a fascinating mix of natural landscape edged by incredibly dense human construction.

dense urban city images

Michael Wolf, a German photographer, focuses on the latter, turning the vast structures of the city into strange stand-alone landscapes that show the enormity and relentless repetitiveness of this vertical urban environment.

dense city urban scaffolding

On the one hand, it is fascinating to see just how overwhelming the overarching rhythms of the buildings are when you take a broad view. At the same time, though, individuality begins to emerge as you zoom in and narrow the scope of your perspective.

dense dark city photos

In his book Architecture of Density Wolf explores the patterns and scales of his new home city, testing different angles and distances while remaining focused on the sometimes-bleak yet awe-inspiring man-made side of this incredibly packed island.

hong kong street level

As his main series of photographs show (versus the scout shots directly above), attempts to distinguish scales through details and color seem almost hopeless against the large-scale monotony of it all. To be fair to its inhabitants, however, those upper-level images tell only one half of the story – visiting Hong Kong has many more dimensions than can be seen looking only from on high.

focus-on-imaging-crop.jpg

The organisers of Europe’s largest photographic trade show, Focus on Imaging, have declared that this year’s show was the last. Mary Walker Exhibitions had organised the show, held in March at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham UK, for the past 24 years. In a statement Mary Walker announced that the rights to the show would not be sold on, but instead it is simply being brought to an end.

Revealing Historical Photos Show US White House Gutted

06 Apr

white house remodel project

Imagine the state of it: the United States executive mansion after 150 years of continuous occupation. By this time, the already-aging White House had retrofit with a maze of modern amenities like plumbing, electricity and heating – none of which this expansive estate was constructed to house.

white house historic interior

Per reporter Brian Resnick, sagging ceilings, scaffolding and supports had rendered the structure an unsanitary fire hazard by the late 1940s – some suggested scrapping it entirely and starting from scratch, but President Truman lobbied to keep and rehabilitate it.

white house reconstruction photos

As these amazing photographs from the National Archives & Truman Library illustrate, the entire interior had to be ripped out. Historically valuable materials and decor were meticulously cataloged and stored, and temporary steel columns and beams erected to keep the exterior from collapsing.

white house oval office

To get equipment like bulldozers inside and clear debris required disassembling machines to avoid bursting holes in the sides of the structure – rebuilding would have been cheaper and faster, but this careful treatment preserved irreplaceable pieces of US history.

white house grand remodel

In all rooms and on all levels, lathe, plaster, brick and mortar were laid bare, giving a unique one-time view – fortunately captured in photographs – into the hidden structure and secret architecture of the most important residence in America.

Connect: Do these images show new 13MP Sony sensor in action?

24 Jan

xperia_z_ip5_oppo5_5.jpeg

A Vietnamese site is sharing what it claims are sample images from Sony’s new Xperia Z smartphone, compared with shots from both the Apple iPhone 5 and the Oppo Find 5, both of which will feature Sony’s new 13-megapixel Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor. Although we can’t vouch for the integrity of the sample shots, if they’re genuine, the comparison provides an interesting look at what the Xperia and Oppo Find 5’s cameras may be capable of. Video Games – The Gallery Show!

03 Jan

Tuesday night at 8:56PM I received a message from The Hive gallery in Salt Lake City, they were in a bit of a bind. They had an art show, all about video games, opening in three days and due to a cancellation they were short one artist.

Video game show? I was in… I had absolutely NO idea what I could do with a day’s notice but I did already have a shoot scheduled the next day with the beautiful Kianna. It seemed meant to be.

We shot all four images within 12 hours of receiving the assignment. As you can see, we had a bit of fun.
