Containertecture: Shipping Crate-Based Buildings by LOT-EK

[ By Steph in Architecture & Offices & Commercial. ]

LOT-EK C-Home 1

Early explorers in the realm of prefab shipping container-based architecture, design studio LOT-EK stacks these steel crates to create everything from compact homes to massive retail complexes. Making aesthetics and functionality equally important, LOT-EK gives the containers a visual dynamism while keeping its structures economical, portable and easy to assemble.

Sanlitun South
LOT-EK Sanitlun 1

LOT-EK Sanitlun 2

Bright red shipping containers burst out of the facade of the Sanitlun South retail complex in Beijing, “organized like a medieval village with a dense fabric of narrow alleys, low-rise buildings, elevated walkways and bridges connection all levels.” Eight-foot-wide shipping containers inserted randomly throughout the structure determine the rhythm of the whole, functioning as canopies over the retail store entrances on the exterior and functioning as small lobbies for stores on the inside.

LOT-EK Whitney Studio 2

Six stacked steel shipping containers form a dense, minimalist cube functioning as an ultra-modern art studio space for the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. The 700-square-foot, 2-story space features a vivid yellow diagonal slice running up to the roof to create a skylight.

PUMA City Shipping Container Store

LOT-EK Puma City 2

LOT-EK Puma City 3

Transported from Spain to Stockholm to Boston, PUMA’s pop-up store had to be highly portable and easy to assemble and disassemble. LOT-EK retrofitted 24 shipping containers to create a retail and event building that could go from one international port to the next, but still feel fresh and dynamic and highly functional. The four-story space features double-height ceilings, a downstairs retail space, upstairs offices and storage, and a bar and open terrace on the top. 40-foot-long shipping containers along the outside join and secure the whole structure both horizontally and vertically.

APAP OpenSchool

LOT-EK APAP 3

LOT-EK APAP 4

The APAP2010 OpenSchool building serves as a recreational space for a public art program at an art school in South Korea, and also as a testing ground for ‘radical container assemblies with high sculptural potential.’ 8 containers are cut along a 45-degree angle and assembled in what LOT-EK describes as “a fishbone pattern generating a large arrow-like volume lifted three meters over the landscape.” The bent container offers access from the pedestrian path outside to the upper levels of the building.

C-Home
LOT-EK C-Home 3

LOT-EK C-Home 2.jp

C-Home is a series of pre-fabricated homes upcycling shipping containers to provide anywhere from 300 to 1300 square feet of living space. Since they’re made of recycled materials – and shipping containers are composed of strong Cor-ten steel – they’re both affordable and durable. Folding cut-outs in the facade let in light and provide a terrace when open.

Jenga-Like Hotel Made of Stacked Shipping Containers

24 Apr

[ By Steph in Architecture & Offices & Commercial. ]

Hive Inn Shipping Container Hotel 1

Shipping containers plastered in stark graphic branding are stacked in a Jenga-like configuration within a steel frame at the Hive-Inn, a concept hotel by OVA Studio. Individual units can easily be moved in and out for a constantly-changing design, with one-of-a-kind hotel suites traveling from one place to another.

Each container gets a unique interior design created by a brand, whether a luxury fashion house like Louis Vuitton, a tech company like Samsung or a celebrity like Lady Gaga. The advertiser’s branding is also painted on the exterior, creating an experience that immerses the occupants in the sponsor’s chosen visuals.

While some people aren’t crazy about feeling like ads are being force-fed to them, it’s not hard to imagine die-hard fans of companies like, say, Ferrari, jumping at the chance to stay in one of these rooms.

OVA envisions the containers being leased to individuals or companies who need temporary space, used not just as hotel rooms but also offices or retail stores. The containers plug into a grid system with a service core and slots for small terraces.

Alley Stack: Brooklyn Home Made of 5 Shipping Containers

01 Mar

[ By Steph in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

Shipping Container Home Brooklyn 1

A tiny slice of real estate in Brooklyn is now an affordable, low-impact multi-level residence made of five stacked and renovated shipping containers. Williamsburg couple Michele Bertomen and David Boyle bought a 6×12-meter lot that had been vacant for 60 years, squeezed between two brick buildings. Conventional building materials would have stretched their budget, so they set out to design and build a shipping container house with a total cost of just $ 50,000 (not including the lot).

Brooklyn Shipping Container Home 2

That price is unheard of in New York City, and it took a lot of innovation – with more than a few bumps in the road – to make it happen. Getting the right permits took ten months, with city officials repeatedly requiring changes to the couple’s plans. Luckily Bertomen is an architect and Boyle a contractor, saving them a lot of money. Once the plans were done and the materials acquired, it took just a few hours to put it all together.

Brooklyn Shipping Container Home 3

The shipping containers were purchased for $ 1,500 each and once assembled, create an interior space measuring nearly 1,600 square feet. The container walls are insulated with Super Therm, a paint that contains ceramic particles, and the home is heated with radiant heat that runs through the concrete floors.

Brooklyn Shipping Container Home 4

Believed to be the first shipping container residence in New York City, the house features multiple outdoor areas (including a private porch for the couple’s dog) and a roof terrace. See a complete tour of the interior at Inhabitat and DNA Info.

Stacked on Silos: Shipping Containers Reclaimed as Dorms

13 Feb

[ By Steph in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

Shipping Container Silo Student Housing 1

Disused grain silos long considered an eyesore in Johannesburg, South Africa are now topped with four layers of reclaimed shipping containers and almost ready to house hundreds of eager students. Mill Junction is an innovative housing project by Citiq Property Developers offering secure, comfortable, reasonably priced housing that could help raise the number of students who actually earn a degree.

The 11-story grain silos make up the bulk of the complex, with many apartments contained within. Windows have been cut into the silos and a paint job will help unify them with the colorful containers stacked on top. Mill Junction will contain 375 individual apartments as well as libraries, lounges, computer rooms and study facilities.

Shipping Container Silo Student Housing 3

The height of the complex will give students some of the best views in the city, especially those lucky enough to get the shipping container units with balcony space. About half of South African undergraduate students drop out of school, partially due to the high cost of living. This project offers energy-efficient, low-cost accommodation with details like motion-sensor lighting and common green space on the roof.

Construction was completed in January 2014 and students are expected to start moving in within weeks.

Winters’ Road to Seeing Finally Shipping

02 Feb

The seemingly mythical Dan Winters: The Road to Seeing is finally, actually in stock and shipping from Amazon. But even now, over a month after release, they are saying it might take an extra 1-2 days to process.

Because Curse of New Dan Winters Book, I guess.

Seriously, this thing disappeared pretty much as soon as it arrived (pre-orders?) and was never planned to be a big press run. So if you want it, you best make hay while the sun shines.

LensRentals.com is now shipping the Canon EOS 5D Mark III with the Magic Lantern ‘hack’ pre-installed. The most notable feature gained by using Magic Lantern on the 5D Mark III is Raw video support, which offers much better video quality than on the ‘stock’ camera. The rest of the Magic Lantern feature set is also available, including focus peaking, an intervalometer, too many movie enhancements to list, plus the DR improvement that we reported on last month.
