You can then order prints of those photos or even print them on coffee mugs, mouse pads and iPhone cases. Read more about the service and our take on it at connect.dpreview.com.

iStockphoto founder launches Stocksy, an artist-owned stock photo service

27 Mar

Bruce Livingstone, founder of iStockphoto (which has since been acquired by Getty Images), has launched Stocksy, an artist-owned stock photography co-operative. Under its licensing terms, photographers receive 50% of each royalty transaction. Each photographer also receives equity and is entitled to a share of the co-operative’s annual profits. This launch comes hot on the heels of a recent and controversial deal between Getty Images and Google, in which Google Drive’s image vault gives public access to over 5000 Getty images with very little compensation to the photographers.

A service center in Taiwan has repaired a seawater-damaged Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED lens by boiling it. According to a post by Nikon Rumors, after investigating the damage, staff established that the AF motor of the lens needed to be replaced and some internal parts were ‘rusted’ due to salt water damage. To remove this rust, they boiled them in water. The lens was apparently fixed in three days. (via Nikon Rumors)

Nikon has released a service advisory for its D600 digital SLR. Based on user complaints, it addresses the widely-reported issue of dust and dirt accumulation on the camera’s sensor. In the advisory, Nikon has belatedly acknowledged that at the point where dust becomes visible in images from the D600, ‘removal may be difficult using normal measures’ and advises customers who have exhausted conventional cleaning options to ‘consult your nearest Nikon service center’, whose technicians will ‘examine the camera thoroughly, and service it as needed.’ Click through for more details, and links to the service advisory.

Extreme Room Service: Space Hotel is Surprisingly Spacious

space hotel

When you take a vacation, the point is usually to get away from everyday life and do something different. Well, there is nothing quite as different (and no place quite as removed from everyday life) as venturing into space. A Russian company called Orbital Technologies is developing a commercial space station, an orbiting hotel that is 217 miles removed from the surface of Earth.

2 commercial space station hotel pod

The incredible hotel is not for the budget-conscious traveler; it will cost a bit over US$ 800,000 just to get there, with another US$ 160,000 or so required for five days of accommodations aboard the space station. However, the spacecraft will be designed as a comfortable environment that is much more focused on leisure than the science-oriented International Space Station.

A trip to Orbital Technologies’ commercial space station will take two days to reach aboard a Soyuz rocket. Experienced space crews will accompany tourists (up to seven at a time) both on the journey from Earth and during their stay in space. Gourmet Earth food – not the bland food tubes astronauts have traditionally been served – will travel in the rocket along with the tourists as well, then be warmed up in on-board microwave ovens just before mealtime.

The commercial space station will be equipped with windows, cameras and binoculars so that guests can see the breathtaking neighborhood the space hotel is in. While the project, slated to open in 2016, is mostly geared toward über-wealthy tourists, it is not exclusively a leisure destination. The commercial space station will also serve as an emergency destination for astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station if they should ever run into trouble while on a mission.

Instagram backs away from controversial changes to terms of service

19 Dec

Istagram_logo.png

Instagram has backed away from controversial changes it planned to make to its terms of service. Co-founder Kevin Systrom has used the company blog to announce that the most sensitive phrase in the terms will be revised. The update would have given Instagram the right to sell user’s images to third parties without compensating them. Systrom says this was never the company’s intention. Instead, he says, wording will be developed to allow it to associate information such as users’ profile images with commercial postings (as Instagram’s owners, Facebook, do).
