  • Organizers say Photokina 2020 is still set to go according to schedule, despite growing COVID-19 concerns

This week, representatives from Koelnmesse, the organization behind Photokina 2020, sat down for a press conference in Cologne, Germany to address, amongst other details, concerns surrounding whether or not Photokina 2020 will take place as cases of COVID-19 continues to spread across the globe.

At the press conference, Koelnmesse Vice President, Christoph Werner, said ‘At this time, there is no reason to halt a large-scale event like [Photokina 2020],’ according to translated text from DC Watch. This statement was made even after consulting with the World Health Organization (WHO), the German Federal Ministry of Health and local authorities, according to Werner.

‘At this time, there is no reason to halt a large-scale event like [Photokina 2020]’

Kai Hillebrand, Chairman of the German Association of Photography, further elaborated at the press conference, saying ‘As long as the health authorities do not announce that trade fairs should be stopped in Europe, [the decision to participate] will be at the discretion of the exhibitors.’

In mid-September, well before the rise of the COVID-19 virus, Leica, Nikon and Olympus were confirmed to have dropped out of the tradeshow. Three months later, on December 6, Photokina confirmed Canon, Panasonic and Sony would be present for the 2020 event. No more than ten days later it was confirmed by PetaPixel that Fujifilm, too, would be absent from the show.

Between the departure of four major brands and the ongoing Coronavirus concerns, it doesn’t look promising for the Photokina 2020, despite being three months out. That said, until further notice, it seems as though everything is still set to go according to schedule, even as WHO raises the global risk of COVID-19 from ‘high’ to ‘very high’

  • 2018 Holiday Schedule at dPS

Happy holidays again – it’s Christmas day in the west and the holidays are in full bloom. We just wanted to let you know what to expect here on dPS over the next few days.

The dPS team is taking a little down time so we can give our writers a break and time with their families too. So we’ll be taking a short break from our regular programming of two articles daily.

Coming up next – the best of dPS 2017

It’s that time again when I go through the articles over the last 12 months to find the best, and most popular ones, for you to read.

So starting tomorrow with the top landscape articles, there will be a new topic each day, with several articles for you to read or review. So get out that new camera or lens you just got, and brush up on your skills, or if you’re just beginning get started with the basics.

    Start off 2018

We’ll get back to our regular schedule of two articles every day on January 2nd (Australia time). For the first couple days you’ll see the wrap-up of the Best Of series, and just one article per day from us, then it’s back to business as usual.

So expect some good reading coming up. If you have some time you can catch up on a few articles you may have missed or focus on learning a new, specific technique.

  • 2011 Photo Tour Schedule

I’m happy to announce the following Photo Tour schedule for 2011 and invite you to join me in photographing these inspiring & amazing locations. (see below)
For full details be sure to visit the JMG-Galleries Photo Tour page.

Gates of the Valley - Yosemite National park

    Yosemite Winter Photography
    March 11-13, 2011 – Max. 4 people
Join me in photographing one of the worlds most majestic and iconic landscapes in North America. Stellar views and a vast number of intimate nature subjects will allow all in attendance to witness nature at its best. Whether you’re looking to expand your portfolio or hone your photographic skills this photo tour is one you’ll not want to miss.

    Yosemite Moonbow
    May 17-19, 2011 – Max. 4 people
(actual full moon is on May 17)
Moonbow – A Rainbow by moonlight? Just when you thought Yosemite’s amazing landscape couldn’t get any more amazing, it takes on a new level of drama under a full moon. Nearly impossible to see with the naked eye the Moonbow phenomenon is revealed through the lens of your camera while photographing Yosemite’s iconic falls. Conditions to witness and photograph a Yosemite Moonbow are ideal only a few times a year and in May weather permitting we should be treated to an amazing light show. In between evening photo sessions by day we’ll conduct photo reviews and explore Yosemite’s iconic landscape.

    White Sands by Moonlight
    October 14-16, 2011 – Max. 4 people
White Sands National Monument is a feast for the creative eye and an incredible location to explore. The ever-changing dunes are a source of endless wonder and inspiration. This trip is timed to take advantage of the October Full Moon.

Note: This photo tour will involve desert camping assuming campgrounds are available and weather conditions permit. Also participants should be able and prepared to hike 2-4 miles into the dunes.

In addition if there is interest I will be accepting a sign-up for attendees who would like to extend their trip through the 18th to photograph the Egg Factory in the Bisti Badlands.

    Death Valley Racetrack
    October 27-30, 2011  – Max. 4 people
Rich in dramatic geological formations, amazing Southwest light and a fascinating history, Death Valley never ceases to amaze. This extreme environment provides numerous photographic opportunities for those with a passion for desert landscapes. Unique to this trip will be our effort to take full advantage of the October New Moon allowing us to enjoy star filled skies in an area that is one of the few remaining in California with little to no light pollution.
