Apple announces updated iPad and redesigned iPad Air, saves new iPhones for later date

Today, Apple announced the details of its latest iPad and iPad Air devices. While many had hoped Apple would also announce its next-generation iPhones at today’s virtual event, the Cupertino company didn’t have ‘one more thing’ in store.

Starting with the new 8th-generation iPad, Apple kept the update fairly straightforward. The new entry-level iPad, which starts at $ 329, now uses the A12 chip, a step up from the A10 found in its predecessor.

In addition to improved performance and battery life, this new chipset also means the iPad will feature Apple’s Neural Engine technology for the first time. Aside from the small internal update though, little was changed, as no external design changes were made.

The 8th-generation iPad is available in Space Gray, Silver and Gold. Pricing starts at $ 329 for the 32GB model.

The same can’t be said for Apple’s new iPad Airs though, which feature an entirely new design that clearly takes inspiration from Apple’s recent iPad Pro devices.

The new iPad Air devices now feature a 10.9” Liquid Retina edge-to-edge display and eschew the Touch ID button on the bottom of the front glass in exchange for a new Touch ID button integrated into the power button. The edges of the device have also been squared off, as has been seen with recent iPad Pro devices. The updated 2360x1640px display features P3 wide-gamut color, True Tone and a laminate coating. It does lack the 120Hz functionality of the display found on the iPad Pro devices though.

Performance has also been dramatically improved thanks to the new A14 Bionic processor, the first in the industry to use 5nm construction. Apple says the CPU is 40% faster than the previous-generation, while GPU performance has improved by 30%. An updated Neural engine also improves the machine learning performance of the device.

As for the built-in cameras, there’s a single 12MP rear camera and a 7MP FaceTime HD camera. Apple has also added USB-C to the iPad Air for the first time, which means it will be able to use various adapters and hubs, as well as support 20W charging and 5Gbps data transfers. Wi-Fi 6 is included and the cellular models will feature LTE that Apple claims is 60% faster. The new iPad Airs will work with Apple’s new Apple Pencil as well as the Apple Magic Keyboard.

The new iPad Airs come in five colors: Space Gray, Silver, Rose Gold, Green and Sky Blue. Pricing starts at $ 599 for the 64GB Wi-Fi model.

Panono buyer saves the brand, will continue making its 360° ball camera

Panono’s high-res 360° camera lives to shoot another day.

That didn’t take long. Just a few days after announcing that the company would be bought, ending an ‘amazing but also exhausting journey,’ the Panono brand has been well and truly saved. In fact, the Swiss private equity investor who bought the company intends to continue ‘all services […] without any disruption.’

All of this happened with the last few days, marking (hopefully) the end of a tumultuous journey that began with a successful Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign and seemingly ended when Panono declared bankruptcy after delivering only about 400 cameras to backers, leaving many supporters angry and out of luck. Until Wednesday of this week, that is.

Enter Swiss-based private equity investor Bryanston Group AG, the new owner of all Panono’s assets, trademarks, patents and employees.

In a press release published Wednesday, July 5th and sent to DPReview yesterday, the investor announced that Panono GmbH will restart its business operations as Professional360 GmbH in Berlin. The company will continue all of Panono’s current services ‘without disruption,’ and is even planning to release new products and software services.

If all goes according to plan, Professional360 will establish itself as, ‘a global leader in the professional 360-degree camera market.’

Which, of course, leaves us with one very pressing question: what about all of those Panono backers left in the lurch by the company’s bankruptcy? According to a company spokesperson, Bryanston Group is actively working on a solution to that pesky problem.

“While all legal liabilities remain with the old Panono GmbH and its management,” reads the statement. “We as Professional360 GmbH feel morally obliged to find a solution that all early supporters of the Panono technology will be able to enjoy the camera as soon as possible after so many years of waiting. We are working on this and will release new information on this topic shortly.”

So it would seem Panono has been saved, and all of the backers who first supported the ‘world’s highest resolution 360° camera’ may still get a chance to vent their frustration by throwing their very own ball camera at a wall.

Bryanston Group AG, a Swiss-based private equity investor has acquired the assets, trademarks and patents of Panono GmbH and will restart its business operations under the new holding company Professional360 GmbH in Berlin.

Professional360 GmbH will continue Panono’s technological leadership by offering the world’s highest resolution 360-degree camera under the Panono brand.

A spokesperson for the company said, “As the new management, we place great confidence in Panono’s groundbreaking technology. Our vision is to be a global leader in the professional 360- degree camera market. We will continue creating and innovating the best 360-degree cameras together with a state-of-the-art platform for our users.

In fact, we are planning to release new products and software services within the next months already. The transition from Panono GmbH to Professional360 GmbH will not be affecting the current users, as the brand and the website will not change, and we will continue to operate the existing platform. Finally, while all legal liabilities remain with the old Panono GmbH and its management, we as Professional360 GmbH feel morally obliged to find a solution that all early supporters of the Panono technology will be able to enjoy the camera as soon as possible after so many years of waiting. Dishwashers have become household items in many American homes but have changed little since their invention, leaving room for improvement (especially in cases where ‘room’ is an issue). Many of the small problems associated with the traditional design are not initially obvious until pointed out — we are simply too used to them.

Front-loading versions can take up considerable space while taking dishes in and out. We take for granted, for instance, that the loading and unloading processes often have to be dedicated, all-at-once tasks in kitchens where folded-down doors get in the way. Front-loader doors also represent a potential point of failure if their water seals are degraded or damaged.

Designers Moshen Jafari Malek and Behzad Taheri have decided to take a top-down approach, developing a top-loading variant that addresses leaks as well as space issues. Putting the spray bar in the center also eliminates another problem with certain conventional designs: getting things equally clean on all racks and levels.
