Panasonic has announced that its DMC-CM1 ‘compact camera with smartphone technology’ will be sold in the UK. Originally the company had marked out France and Germany as the only countries to get the device, but citing ‘high demand’ it has included a limited number of UK stores to stock it. Read more

We knew it was coming but it wasn’t just the expectation that made the announcement from Flickr such an anti-climax. The declaration that the photo-sharing site will now provide its own way for members to license their images, following the end of its agreement with Getty, was also disappointingly short of details. Flickr’s members can sign up for the program at www.flickr.com/marketplace where the site’s “curatorial team will provide assistance, outreach and connectivity to help you get your photos licensed.” When those curators have found “exciting and credible opportunities” they’ll send a Flickr Mail to give the photographer details about the licensing program.
In addition to licensing opportunities with photo agencies, Flickr is also promising to showcase images on the Flickr blog and across parent company Yahoo’s properties. The sign-up page includes logos from the BBC, Reuters and The New York Times, as well as Gizmodo and Monocle.
At launch, that was all the information that Flickr made available. A discussion on Flickr Central, the site’s forum, was ignored by Flickr’s usually active community organizers even though participants talked favorably of car payments and vacations that the old Getty agreement had enabled them to fund. Few other details have been released so we don’t know how much photographers will be paid; how large Flickr’s own commission will be; whether images have to be exclusive; how they will be used; or what sort of photos are most likely to sell.
Thomas Knoll, the co-author of Adobe Photoshop and the designer of Adobe’s Camera Raw, is auctioning six large framed prints of his work, with proceeds going to The Luminous Endowment for Photographers.
Tom will be speaking at Adobe MAX this year about his photography and how he uses Photoshop and Lightroom to process his own photographs.
As part of his talk, Tom will showing raw capture / intermediate / final stages for a number of his photos. For six of these photos he has made large prints which will be displayed at the conference and then auctioned off, with the profits donated to The Luminous Endowment for Photographers.

The Luminous Landscape – What’s New

Built in the 1860s and now on sale for half a million pounds (under $ 1,000,000) , it is hard to beat what this sea fort offers by way of views, a prestigious address (No 1 Thames) and amazing location (a short commute by speedboat from London).
The massive fortified structure (featuring 15-foot-thick walls) can be accessed by boat or walked to when the tide is low, albeit a long and muddy way to go. A BBC interview (screenshots above and below) shows both the problems and potential of this amazing piece of real estate – there are precedents, too, for converting old British army and sea forts as well as harbor bases.
The current owner purchased the property from the Crown Estate, which is to say he approach the “Lord High Admiral for Her Most Excellency Majesty Queen Elizabeth”, made an offer and had it accepted.
However, the buyer-turned-seller, himself a London resident, never found the time or funds to refurbish the place, so it remains in a state of partial decay – a would-be purchaser should expect a significant outlay for renovating the building’s exterior and interior alike.
Still, for someone with a fortune as well as a vision, it is hard to imagine a neater place to escape from city life. The firm WT Architecture has already taken a stab at conceptual designs for rehabilitating to structure (renderings shown above and below). As their drawings illustrate, there is a rich variety in terms of materials, shapes and spaces to work with, including a cavernous central stone circle with a tall wood-and-concrete watchtower and an adjacent rectangular brick structure (that could be used for guests).
As BldgBlog notes, “At first glance, it’s an amazing offshore castle, a fairy tale artificial island of 19th-century military Romanticism roughly an hour’s boat ride east of London. But don’t jump in too quickly, lest you overlook the ruinous state of the place: it needs almost literally everything, from plumbing to electricity, glass windows to the most thorough cleaning you could imagine, having been open to the oceanic elements for decades”

Ellen DeGeneres was probably overplaying Bradley Cooper’s photography skills when she called that image the “best photo ever.” But the #Oscar post that broke the record for the largest number of retweets on Twitter might also have broken another record: for the world’s most valuable image.
With over 3 million retweets, the picture, with its galaxy of megastars, was a giant advertisement for Samsung. The company’s name didn’t appear in the tweet but according to online advertising firm Kontera, the picture led to the brand receiving about 900 online mentions a minute. Samsung is believed to have paid around $ 20 million for five minutes’ of advertising time during the Oscar ceremony and ten sponsored celebrity selfies shot backstage. Certainly, the white Samsung Note that DeGeneres was seen holding throughout the ceremony picked up plenty of air time. (And the iPhone on which she posted her own tweets backstage somewhat less.)

A multifunctional masterpiece built with crowd-sourced design ideas and a small-space vision by the founder of TreeHugger, this New York City apartment is now for sale for $ 995,000.
The star of Graham Hill’s LifeEdited, the unit boasts transforming furniture, sliding walls, secret panels and hidden resources from an array of manufacturers and custom installers.
Per the Gizmodo video above, the space unfolds to accommodate everything from dozen-plus dinner parties to overnight guests when you pull out the magically-long dining table or push an entire wall to one side.
From the living room (which splits into bedrooms) to the bathroom and kitchen, lots of little tricks make it all work, including a microwave that doubles as an oven and modular burners that can be deployed on demand.
Everyone knows a million dollars does not go quite so far in Manhattan, but some might still wonder if the place is worth the asking price. Cool factor and high-tech tweaks aside, though, it is worth noting that other units in the building have Zillow estimates of 1.5 million dollars in some cases, so at the very least this high-sounding price may not be wildly off base.
Color, pattern, unexpected materials and careful editing of rustic historic architectural details make these apartment and condo remodels one-of-a-kind.
