18 August, 2013 – Panasonic FZ70 Field Report

18 Aug

I received two new cameras for testing recently, the Panasonic GX7 and the Panasonic FX70. The GX7 is coming with me to Mexico on vacation this week, and I’ll be putting it through its paces there with a variety of lenses, shooting both stills and video.

My review of Panasonic’s latest superzoom, the FZ70 is now online.

"Having been to Antarctica with Michael and Kevin, I would say after having traveled the world and shot nearly my entire life as an exhibiting photographer,  it was one of my highlights in my life and I talk about it, all the time.  The images and experience of seeing something visionary and nearly extinct from the world, to see and experience the wildlife and scenery that does not fear humans is amazing.  The images I shot there won me two Smithsonian awards and nearly 18 other international awards". – Tim Wolcott

30 June, 2013 – Leica Vario X Report

30 Jun

Many people are finding the Leica Vario X intriguing. It isn’t the Mini-M that "marketing" teased it would be, as discussed in our earlier report by Sean Reid, but the new diminuative Leica seems to be capturing a lot of people’s attention. Nick Rain’s new report tells us more.

"Michael’s and Jeff’s tutorial videos are absolutely awesome, not only because of the information transmitted but also because of the casual, conversational style which somehow really makes things stick in your memory."

10 March, 2013 – Sigma DP3 Report

10 Mar

When it comes to image quality Sigma has hit an out-of-the-park home run with its Merrill sensor. They have just released their third camera in the DP series, the DP3 Merrill, and we today have an early-days review by Hulyss Bowman to tell you what it’s all about.

Now – if Sigma could just put this sensor in a worthy successor to the ill-fated SD1 (and get its original pricing debacle behind them) they’d really have a DSLR competitor. Oh yes, and they need to bag their dreadful processing software, for good measure.

Report zooms in on giant camera resolution test charts throughout the US

19 Feb

eglin_afb_fl_target.jpg

Dozens of two-dimentional aerial photo calibration targets are scattered all across the United States, according to a report by the Center for Land Use Interpretation. Constructed mostly during the 1950s and 1960s, these large outdoor charts were used as ‘a platform to test, calibrate, and focus aerial cameras traveling at different speeds and altitudes.’ The report points out that although some of these ‘charts’ are still used for some optical camera testing and calibration, they are primarily relics of the past. Click through for more information, and images.

26 October, 2012 – Panasonic GH3 Prelim Field Report

26 Oct

It’s been two years to the month since I first reviewed the Panasonic GH2. Now it’s the GH3’s turn. This exciting new camera builds on the features and success of its predecessor. My premininary field report is now online.

"Every time I go back to a module I had already seen, I learn additional things.  I have never seen tutorials that have the excellent mix of what the features are,
how to use them, enough of the under-the-hood information
and concepts so that I can utilize the features creatively and efficiently,
and just enough humor to keep the motivation
 level high.  Wow!"
