Sony to release 12 more E-mount lenses in two years, add AI to cameras

At Sony’s press conference at Photokina the company announced that 12 more E-mount lenses will be arriving over the next two years, bringing the total to 60.

In addition, the company emphasized its focus on both speed and integrating artificial intelligence into its approaches. One application of the latter Sony talked about was using machine learning to train its Eye AF algorithm to detect and track eyes of animals, with benefits to both wildlife and pet photography.

Red releases Hydrogen One product photos, confirms release date

When it was first announced in July 2017 the RED Hydrogen One super-phone created quite the splash, thanks to a Leica-made 5.7″ lightfield holographic display and a pin-based expansion system that allows for attaching a range of hardware modules. The system is similar to Motorola’s Moto Mods, but probably more focused toward high-end video given the brand we’re dealing with.

Since then delivery has been pushed back several times, most recently because the company needed some extra time to receive carrier certification. However, now we have a fixed release date: November 2nd. Pre-orders will ship on October 9th.

The Hydrogen One aluminum version will be available through AT&T, Verizon and Telcel
for $ 1295

Additionally, Red founder Jim Stannard has shared several actual product photos on the Hydrogen product forum that allow for a good look at the device’s large dual-camera module. The Hydrogen One also comes with a rugged-looking design that features a lot of carbon fiber, giving the phone a pretty unique appearance.

The price tag will unfortunately be unique as well. The Hydrogen One aluminum version will be available through AT&T, Verizon and Telcel for $ 1295. The titanium variant will be out in 2019 and set you back an additional $ 200.

Magnum Photos partners with Scottish distillery to release limited-edition whisky

To celebrate the construction of a new $ 178 million distillery, Scottish whisky distillery Macallan has partnered with the international photo cooperative Magnum Photos and six of its photographers to create the Macallan Masters of Photography: Magnum Edition. The limited-edition box-set includes input and images from some of Magnum’s most well-known photographers, including Steve McCurry, Martin Parr, Paolo Pellegrin, Mark Power, Gueorgui Pinkhassov and Alec Soth.

Inside the vibrant portfolio-style packaging is bottle of highland single malt whisky, crafted by drawing from eight different casks, each of which was chosen ‘to reflect the photography style of each of the Magnum photographers and to represent Magnum itself.’ The whisky’s color is a ‘deep amber with rose gold hues’ and smells of ‘hints of peat layered into warm spiced ginger with mellow oak notes.’

Six 11×14-inch signed prints from each of the Magnum Photos photographers are included inside the box, which was designed to look like the ‘classic photographic portfolio boxes on display at the Magnum studio.’

As part of the collaboration, each of the six photographers went to Scotland to capture images of the new distillery in various stages of construction. Magnum Photos has shared a wonderful post highlighting the photographs each artists captured.

This isn’t the first time Macallen has partnered with photographers, either. The Macallan has released multiple limited-edition Masters of Photography Series, celebrating the achievements and work of photographers including Annie Leibovitz, Elliot Erwitt, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Albert Watson and Rankin.

The Macallan Masters of Photography: Magnum Edition is limited to 2,000 units and is currently available around the world for $ 3,500.

Leica introduces new features and enhancements to five cameras in mass firmware release

Leica has released new firmware for five of its camera models, making significant changes to the way existing features operate while also adding totally new functions in some cases. The updates effect the M10 rangefinder, the Q compact and the new CL, as well as the TL2 and the T/TL.

The highlights of the update include allowing four minute exposure times in the M10 at base ISO, and the addition of aperture value recording in the camera’s EXIF data – even though it will be an estimate. Q users get a favourites menu that can hold up to 15 items for especially quick access, and the ability to determine that the electronic shutter should be constantly on. They will also welcome faster processing of the camera’s DNG Raw files.

The CL now offers users the option to transfer the functions of the two main dials between each other, and for those who find themselves accidentally pressing buttons on the small body a new lock feature deactivates access points to keep them from being unintentionally altered.

Control over the shutter mode comes to the TL so users can choose when to shoot with the electronic or mechanical shutter, and the firmware brings focus peaking to users of the M adapter and to those using R lenses on this little camera. The T and TL bodies get better chromatic aberration correction and support for the Elmarit-TL 18mm F2.8 ASPH lens.

Extensive updates for Leica Cameras: New firmware releases with numerous improvements and entirely new functions.

Leica Camera AG has released a series of extensive firmware updates for the Leica M10, Leica Q, Leica CL, Leica TL2 and Leica T/TL camera models. Alongside further improvements of existing features, these updates also introduce a considerable number of new camera functions.

Leica M10 (v2.4.5.0)

  • Optimisation of the delete menu: The graphic user interface for the deletion of pictures has been revised.
  • Longer exposure times: Exposure times of up to four minutes are now possible at base ISO.
  • New continuous shooting mode with lower frame rate: An additional continuous shooting mode is now available (Continuous Low Speed, three frames per second).
  • ‘Load profile’ is now available in the favourites menu.
  • Aperture value in EXIF data: The camera compares the brightness measured through the lens with the measured ambient brightness to estimate the aperture used. This value is then written to the EXIF data. In some cases, the interpretation of the subject or scene may lead to incorrect estimation of the aperture value, for instance when shooting subjects or scenes with high contrast and black or white objects.
  • LED deactivation: The red LED on the back of the camera can now be deactivated in the control elements menu.
  • Auto-ISO setting: Auto-ISO for base ISO is set to the default value of ISO 200 to optimise dynamic range.

Leica Q (v3.0)

  • Favourites Menu: Users can now enter and save up to 15 settings for faster access in a Favourites Menu.
  • Power Saving Mode: If required, the camera can now be set to switch to Stand-By Mode after 10 seconds.
  • Extended functions for the Fn button: Even more options can now be selected for programming the multi-function button.
  • User Profiles: Profiles can now be imported from and exported to a memory card.
  • OIS – optional ‘Auto’ setting: This setting enables automatic activation of optical image stabilisation at shutter speeds of 1/60 s and slower.
  • EVF/LCD setting options: This menu item can now be assigned to the Fn button.
  • Settings for the electronic shutter: The electronic shutter can now be set to permanently active.
  • DNG files: The processing speed of DNG files in the camera has been increased.
  • Autofocus fields: The last AF field used is now memorised and recalled when switching the camera off and on again.
  • Self-timer: The setting is now memorised and recalled when switching the camera off and on again.
  • Exposure preview deactivation option: Exposure preview can now be deactivated in manual mode (especially useful when shooting in the studio with flash systems, underexposed settings or in dark environments).
  • Image review: Automatic image review remains active as long as the shutter release button is pressed.

Leica CL (v2.0)

  • Programming of setting dial functions: The programming of the two setting dials can now be swapped from one to the other.
  • Button lock: Pressing and holding the left-hand setting dial activates button lock (this does not lock the on/off switch, the shutter release or the left-hand setting dial).
  • Power Saving Mode: If required, the camera can now be set to switch to Stand-By Mode after 10 seconds.
  • Touchscreen autofocus: The AF metering points can now also be shifted with the joystick control in Touch AF mode when using the electronic viewfinder.

Leica TL2 (v1.4)

  • Selection of LCD / viewfinder settings: It is now possible to select when and where the content is displayed (up until now, display was simultaneous).
  • Customisable left function menu: The items of the left function menu can now be customised by the assignment of up to six of a total of thirteen functions.
  • Extended functions for the Fn button: Now, one of a total of six different functions can be assigned to the Fn button.
  • Settings for the electronic shutter: The electronic shutter can be deactivated, permanently activated or set to complement the mechanical shutter.
  • Focus Peaking in AF Mode: Manual focus corrections can now be applied in AF Mode with the MF-ring. In the meantime, Focus Peaking is available from FW 1.4.
  • Focus Peaking with M-/R-Lenses: Focus Peaking is now also available when using M- R-Lenses with the M-Adapter L.
  • Exposure correction during video recording: The left-hand setting dial can now be used to apply exposure correction during video recording.
  • Zoom-in when reviewing images in the EVF: The right-hand setting dial allows users to zoom in while viewing images in the EVF.

Leica T/TL (v1.8/v2.3)

  • Simpler connection between the camera and a smartphone by app
  • Reduction of chromatic aberration for all TL-Lenses
  • Support and auto-update for the Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH.

Report: Canon to release new 70-200mm F4L and F2.8L lenses next month

Canon Rumors is reporting some big news if you’re in the market for a new 70-200mm lens. According to the rumor site, it’s a near certainty that Canon will be debuting two new 70-200mm lenses in early June: the Canon EF 70-200mm F4L IS II, and the Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS III.

Both of the current versions—the Mark I of the F4L and the Mark II of the F2.8L—are certainly due for an upgrade. The 70-200mm F2.8L IS II was released in 2010 and the F4L IS even farther back in 2006. Meanwhile, third-party manufacturers like Tamron and Tokina have released their own 70-200mm F2.8 and F4 lenses more recently, and Sigma confirmed to DPReview that it will release its much-anticipated 70-200mm F2.8 Art lens “not too far in the future.”

In other words, early June would be a great time for Canon to get the jump on Sigma and fight back against the Tamron 70-200mm G2 that people have been so positive about.

The good news is, this isn’t just a thin rumor. Canon Rumors says they can “100% confirm” that the 70-200mm F4L IS II is coming, and “95% confirm” that the 70-200mm F2.8L IS III will join it. Of course, as the rumor site points out, lens announcement and release dates can change at the last minute, but we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for both these announcements in the coming month.

Fujifilm is releasing firmware updates, both large and small, for six of its X-series cameras, with the X-T2 receiving the most significant changes. These updates will begin rolling out this month and will continue through May. Some of the highlights include:

Fujifilm will release new firmware updates for the FUJIFILM GFX 50S, X-H1, X-T2, X-Pro2, X-E3 and X100F. Updates will vary by model and are expected in April 2018 and May 2018.

1. FUJIFILM GFX 50S (Ver.3.10) – Available in May 2018

Report: Apple won’t release the next Mac Pro until 2019

Apple delivered some slightly disappointing news to professional users in an interview with TechCrunch this week. Speaking with the tech publication, Senior director of Mac Hardware Product Marketing Tom Boger revealed that the next version of the Mac Pro is not coming in 2018. It will be a 2019 product.

The current Mac Pro—colloquially referred to as the trash can Mac Pro because of its form factor—was released all the way back in 2013, and even Apple admitted that the design was a mistake. In April of 2017, Apple executive Craig Federighi told BuzzFeed News that the company had “designed ourselves into a bit of a corner” with the circular form-factor, and Phil Schiller promised users that Apple was “completely rethinking the Mac Pro” for the next generation.

Since then, we haven’t heard much, and professional users not content with the all-in-one form-factor of the powerful new iMac Pro were holding out purchasing it in the hopes that the next Mac Pro was right around the corner. It sounds like Apple knows this, and decided to be un-characteristically candid with the professional community through this TechCrunch interview:

“We want to be transparent and communicate openly with our pro community, so we want them to know that the Mac Pro is a 2019 product,” says Boger. “We know that there’s a lot of customers today that are making purchase decisions on the iMac Pro and whether or not they should wait for the Mac Pro.”

Professional creatives who are married to the Apple ecosystem—particularly high-end video producers—still have a choice to make: purchase an iMac Pro now, or wait a year (or more) for the next generation Mac Pro? But at least now they won’t have to worry that a new Mac Pro will come out a few days or weeks after they pull the trigger on their iMac purchase.

Red gives deep-space sensor dual ISO and puts it on general release

A sensor designed to be used in space has gone on general release from cinema camera manufacturer Red. The Gemini 5K S35 was originally created especially to work in very low light conditions, but has been adapted to offer dual native ISO settings so it can also shoot in normal conditions. The sensor uses particularly large pixels and features a resolution of 15.4MP on 30.72 x 18mm dimensions.

Red claims the Gemini has a dynamic range of 16.5 stops when used in Standard mode, which makes it good at recording very bright highlights and deep shadow detail in the same frame. When switched to Low Light mode some dynamic range is sacrificed, but in return users get exceptional noise performance that produces footage at ISO 3200 in LL (Low Light) mode that looks the same as movie recorded at ISO 800 in Standard mode, according to the company.

It seems the sensor uses different hardware behind the pixels to deal with each of the sensitivity modes, in a similar fashion to the Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5s and the EVA1 cameras. The LL and Normal modes are selected in the menu and become active immediately. To maximize the resolution of anamorphic work Red has made the Gemini 5K S35 slightly taller than the standard sensors it uses by adding 300 pixels to the vertical recording area to make a 5120×3000-pixel area.

New Sony release cable enables dual-shooting with the RX0

In addition to the new HVL-F60RM wireless flash, Sony also debuted a new release cable that might be of interest to owners of the company’s ultra-compact DSC-RX0 sort-of action cam. The VMC-MM2 cable is Sony’s “convenient dual-camera shooting solution” for users who want to shoot with their Sony ILC and RX0 at the same time.

The cable is used to sync your Sony alpha (or Cyber-shot) camera up with an RX0 enable simultaneous photo/video capture using only the main camera’s release button. To quote Sony:

This form of dual-camera shooting is especially useful for wedding, event and press conference photographers and journalists. It offers the opportunity to capture multiple perspectives using different angles of view that can be edited and packaged into an impactful series of work.

Leaked: Sigma preparing to release 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art lens

Earlier today, Sigma sprang a pretty major leak ahead of the CP+ show in Japan. According to leaked images from Nokishita, Sigma is planning to add a 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art lens to its ultra-wide angle lineup very soon. In fact, it looks like Nokishita got their hands on all of Sigma’s standard product shots.

  • Mount: Canon, Nikon, Sigma
  • Lens construction: 17 elements in 11 groups
  • Number of diaphragm blades: 9 (circular aperture)
  • Maximum photographing magnification: 1: 5.4
  • Size (Sigma mount): ? 96.4mm x 135.1mm
  • Weight (Sigma mount): 1,150g

Of course, this isn’t the Sigma 70-200mm that’s been rumored (and hoped for) since before the Photo Plus Expo, but it does make for an impressive lineup of ultra-wides in the much-beloved Sigma Art series.

If previous experience is anything to judge by, Nokishita’s product photo leaks usually come just days (sometimes less than 24 hours) before an official announcement, so we’re expecting this lens to make landfall very soon.
