Delkin introduces USB 3.0 multi-slot card reader that includes CFast port

Memory and memory accessory company Delkin Devices has announced a new multi-format card reader that will be compatible with the CFast standard. DDreader-48 uses a USB 3.0 interface and can facilitate data rates of up to 500MB/s with CFast 2.0, SD UHS-ll and microSD UHS-l memory cards. While the SD and microSD formats can’t yet test the reader’s transfer speeds on their own the extra capacity in the pipeline allows the reader to read or write from or to each of three slots simultaneously to save users time. A fourth port allows users to connect a Flash Drive via USB.

Apple cuts adapter and card reader prices to appease new MacBook Pro buyers

When Apple announced its new MacBook Pro last week, Mac fans were up in arms about the removal of its HDMI port, SD card reader and MagSafe power connector (among other things.)  The new models have four Thunderbolt 3 ports (two on each side), and that’s it, thus requiring ‘dongles’ in order to use legacy connectors. SanDisk also produces an SD card reader (pictured) that plugs right into the side of the computer.

To help placate those who aren’t excited about spending nearly $ 120 just to get their SD card reader and HDMI port back, the company has cut prices of many USB-C and Thunderbolt adapters for a limited time.

Xiaomi Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus offer high-end camera specs and ultrasonic fingerprint reader

Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has launched two new high-end devices today, which in terms of specification and product naming, are squarely aimed at Apple’s recently launched iPhone 7 models. 

The Mi 5s is the smaller of the two new devices, featuring a 5.15″ force-sensitive 1080p display and a 3,200 mAh battery in a fully metallic body. The camera specification can compete with some of the current best Android smartphones. Sony’s 1/2.3-inch IMX378 CMOS sensor offers the same large 1.55um pixel pitch as the predecessor IMX 377 that is used in the Google Nexus 6P or HTC 10. It comes with on-sensor phase-detection and is combined with an F2.0 aperture, a dual-tone LED flash, auto HDR and 4K video recording at 30 fps. The front camera is less exciting, offering a 4-megapixel sensor with F2.0 aperture and an 80-degree wide-angle lens. Xiaomi has published a sample gallery on its website.

The Android OS is powered by Qualcomm’s latest top-end Snapdragon 821 chipset, up to 4GB of RAM and 128G internal storage. Another highlight is the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that is located underneath the front glass. The ultrasonic technology eliminates the need for cutting a hole into the glass and, according to Xiaomi, works better with dirty fingers than capacitive versions. In China the Mi 5s can pre-ordered on September 29th for approximately $ 300 for the base model with 64GB storage and 3GB RAM. The high-end version with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage will set you back $ 345.
The larger Mi 5s Plus comes with a 5.7″ display but no force-sensitivity and a conventional fingerprint reader on the back. On the plus side it has a bigger 3,800 mAh battery and a 13-megapixel dual-camera. The latter works in a similar way to the version in the Huawei P9, combining images from a color and BW sensor for improved detail and dynamic range. Both cameras use Sony’s 1/3.06 IMX258 sensor. The Mi 5s Plus will cost you approximately $ 345 for the model with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. A premium model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage will be available for about $ 390.

Lenovo’s Moto G Plus comes with 1/2.4-inch sensor and fingerprint reader

Motorola’s Moto G series has always been one of the best options for smartphone users looking for top performance at mid-range pricing. Now, the first new G model has been launched since Motorola became a Lenovo company. True to form, the Moto G Plus offers several features we are used to seeing on high-end devices and a promising-looking camera specification.

An Omnivsion OV16860 1/2.4-inch 16MP sensor with a large pixel size of 1.34um is paired with a fast F2.0 aperture, on-sensor phase detection and laser-assisted AF. There is also a dual-LED flash and a 5MP front camera with F2.2 aperture. On the software side of things a new Pro mode allows for manual control over shutter speed and other essential shooting parameters.

Like all recent Moto devices, the Moto G Plus comes with a ‘pure’ version of Android 6.0, without any manufacturer-specific add-ons, to keep things as responsive and smooth as possible. Google Photos is the default photos app and includes two years of free storage at original image quality for Moto G buyers.

The OS and other software is powered by a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 chipset with octa-core CPU and 550 MHz Adreno 405 GPU. There are 2GB of RAM and microSD-expandable storage options ranging from 16 to 64GB. Images can be viewed and composed on a 5.5-inch 1080p display that is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. 

The 3000 mAh battery features Motorola’s TurboPower charging which can provide approximately 6 hours worth of power in 15 minutes of charging. A fingerprint reader at the front increases security and provides a convenient way of unlocking the device. The Lenovo Moto G Plus has first been launched in India where it will be exclusive to Amazon.in and start at approximately $ 200 for the base 16GB version. Pricing for other regions has not been revealed yet. With the Moto G Plus Lenovo has also launched the 4th generation of the standard Moto G model which comes with identical processor specifications but has to make do without the fingerprint reader and, with a 13MP Sony IMX214 image sensor, offers a very similar camera specification to last year’s Moto G.

Lexar launches USB 3.0 card reader for XQD storage

Memory card manufacturer Lexar has announced a new card reader for users of XQD format memory cards that uses the USB 3.0 standard. The XQD 2.0 USB 3.0 Reader is designed to be used with XQD 2.0 cards and to move large amounts of data in a short time. Lexar says the reader is particularly aimed at those shooting high quantities of Raw files and those recording 4K video, and claims the built-in USB plug on the reader makes it more portable and easy to use as no cables are required.

The reader is backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices, but obviously with some sacrifice in speed. Theoretically, USB 3.0 devices can transfer data at a rate of up to 640MB/s, which is ten times the theoretical speed of USB 2.0 devices. Currently the fastest read speed for a Lexar XQD card is 400MB/s.

The XQD 2.0 USB 3.0 Reader will cost £29.99/$ 34.99 when it becomes available at the end of this month.

Western Digital launches My Passport Wireless hard drive with built-in SD card reader

DPR reader loses camera in fall, sustains injury and lives to tell the tale

Let’s get the important thing out of the way first – Greg Theulings is fine. His Fujifilm X-T1, on the other hand, is not. Keen landscape photographer and DPR forum member, Theulings was on a trip to to Luxembourg and the German Eifel photographing the some rapids when he slipped on a rock, fell into the water and dislocated his shoulder. His camera and lens were destroyed, but his memory card survived. See his photos and read his story – and maybe take a little extra care on those rocks when you’re out on your last photo trip of the summer.
