Zeiss will raise the prices of all its lenses in the US on October 1

Zeiss has announced it will be increasing the price of its lenses in the United States starting October 1, 2021.

According to a graphic, embedded below and shared by Leica Rumors, lenses in the Batis and Loxia lines will increase by $ 50 per unit, while the Milvus (ZE & ZF.2) and ZM lenses will increase by $ 75 and $ 100 per unit, respectively. Zeiss’ T* UIV and POL filters will increase by 10% each.

If you’re already in the market for one, you might want to pick one up within the next month. Otherwise, count on shelling out a little more cash to get your hands on the Zeiss lens of your choosing.

Canon USA unveils RAISE, an online photo platform with AI-powered features

Canon USA has launched RAISE, its first online photo community. The platform offers photographers a destination for storing their images, which are organized using Canon’s artificial intelligence engine. Users have the option to create Collections for privately sharing images with others outside of the community, and they can browse other users’ images via a personalized feed.

RAISE’s most notable feature is its AI-powered organization, which includes auto-tagging images with the subject, category, color, style, composition, and emotion. Canon designed the platform for more than just uploading images, however, with Canon USA President Kazuto Ogawa explaining, ‘Creativity is born from community – from collaboration with like-minded individuals. With RAISE, we are building that community for photographers.’

Photographers have the option of publicly sharing their work with the RAISE community. Images can be uploaded in high-resolution JPEG format, and starting in March, Canon will release a RAISE plugin for Adobe Lightroom Classic CC. The company says its users retain ownership of images uploaded to the platform.

Canon is showcasing RAISE at the Wedding Portrait & Photography Show in Las Vegas through March 1, 2019.

NPPA to raise dues for the first time in 11 years, because defending truth ain’t cheap

The National Press Photographers Association, the professional organization that regularly advocates for and defends the rights of visual journalists in and outside its ranks, has announced that it will be raising its membership dues for the first time in 11 years starting this coming January. Because, as they explain, “defending the rights and freedoms of visual journalists isn’t free.”

The news was announced in a blog post published earlier this week by photojournalist and NPPA President Melissa Lyttle. As more and more photojournalists are forced to work freelance, without the backing of a major media organization, the NPPA has had to adapt, writes Lyttle.

“This has made our legal advocacy work more critical than ever, as our members experience a rise in interference, harassment, and arrests along with an increase in assaults of journalists,” she writes. “We also see a public increase in the distrust of the media, challenges to the First Amendment by the current administration, state, and local government, an ever-increasing number of copyright infringements, and a rash of ill-conceived anti-drone laws.”

But all of this advocacy and legal work comes at a price, and so the NPPA board has voted to increase membership dues for the first time in 11 years, starting January 1st, 2018.

If you’re interested in joining the NPPA or re-upping your membership, you can do so at the old rates by the end of 2017. Once January 1st rolls around those annual rates will go up to $ 75 for student and retired member memberships ($ 10 increase), $ 145 for a professional membership ($ 35 increase), $ 240 for a family membership (households with more than one working photojournalist), $ 170 for international membership with surface mail, and $ 245 for international membership with air mail.

NPPA membership comes with several perks, including: discounted insurance, services and products; being listed in a searchable database of photojournalists; the ability to participate in the NPPA’s mentorship program; and more.

Wash, Raise, Repeat: Vertical Top-Loading Dishwasher Saves Space

Dishwashers have become household items in many American homes but have changed little since their invention, leaving room for improvement (especially in cases where ‘room’ is an issue). Many of the small problems associated with the traditional design are not initially obvious until pointed out — we are simply too used to them.

Front-loading versions can take up considerable space while taking dishes in and out. We take for granted, for instance, that the loading and unloading processes often have to be dedicated, all-at-once tasks in kitchens where folded-down doors get in the way. Front-loader doors also represent a potential point of failure if their water seals are degraded or damaged.

Designers Moshen Jafari Malek and Behzad Taheri have decided to take a top-down approach, developing a top-loading variant that addresses leaks as well as space issues. Putting the spray bar in the center also eliminates another problem with certain conventional designs: getting things equally clean on all racks and levels. The designers also note that a variable-height center shelf could allow more versatility in terms of including larger pots and pans. At the same time, the vertical design avoids messing with what works: porous wire-frame shelves and side containers for silverware. It makes you wonder: what other ordinary appliances are just waiting for a simple but powerful redesign?

Much of the technical specs on their Kickstarter page will be of interest to audiophiles (and show just how much these makers have thought about their project), but in summary: “The architecture of the earbud is based on two main covers which are ultrasonically welded to create a water-tight seal, protecting the electrical components. The materials are carefully selected to withstand both climate and impact testing. As all project members have extensive experience of creating similar consumer products, we know what works and what does [not].”
